Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone PS5 samurai adventure with the scale and visual sweep of a historical film, but its open-world structure will feel familiar to players of modern action games. Its strongest case is atmosphere, combat and a more layered story of healing and redemption; it is a less obvious pick if you want an entirely new template for exploration.

Is Ghost of Yōtei worth playing?

For players who want a cinematic samurai drama, striking landscapes and visceral action, the launch-era reviews make a persuasive case. TechRadar praised the game’s style, scenery and combat, while Tom’s Guide highlighted its setting and fighting alongside a caveat: people familiar with modern open-world games may find the structure recognizable. Those are the reviewers’ assessments, not a guarantee that every player will respond the same way.

The “old Hollywood epic” framing works as a critical metaphor for the game’s sweeping presentation and dramatic scale, not as Sony’s official label. It describes the experience more convincingly on screen than it does the underlying open-world design: spectacle and atmosphere are prominent, while the genre framework is less novel.

What is the story, and is it a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima?

Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone PS5 game set in 1600s rural Japan, about 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima. It follows Atsu, a wandering mercenary pursuing vengeance and redemption; Jin Sakai does not appear. PlayStation UK describes it as a standalone experience rather than a direct continuation of Jin’s story. PlayStation UK’s game page

Ghost of Yōtei PS5
  • Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
  • Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
  • An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
  • Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.

Sucker Punch’s official thematic framing reaches beyond revenge. In Sony Interactive Entertainment’s October 2, 2025 launch release, Brian Fleming, Co-Founder and Studio Head of Sucker Punch Productions, called it “a story of healing and redemption that runs deeper than vengeance, told through the eyes of a new hero set in the breathtaking edge of Japan.” The distinction matters: revenge supplies Atsu’s immediate drive, while Sony presents healing and redemption as the deeper arc. What makes the game feel epic—and where does it feel familiar?

Presentation and setting

Both reviewed accounts emphasize cinematic visuals and Ezo’s landscape. TechRadar’s PS5 review praised the stylish presentation and scenic world; Tom’s Guide likewise singled out the setting and visual impact. That critical response supports the epic comparison: the environment and dramatic framing are central to the appeal, not just decoration around combat.

Ghost of Yotei (PS5)
  • Discover a bold, new story of a warrior in Japan who is on her own mission of vengeance.
  • Set 300 years after the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone experience set in 1600s rural Japan. The story follows a haunted, lone mercenary named Atsu. Thirsty for revenge, she travels through the beautiful, rugged landscapes of northern Japan, hunting those who killed her family many years earlier.
  • Sixteen years after her family’s death, Atsu’s quest across Ezo brings her to unexplored lands in search of a gang of six outlaws, but she finds much more than vengeance. Throughout her journey, Atsu will discover unlikely allies, and greater bonds than she could have imagined.

Combat and narrative motivation

TechRadar described the action as visceral, and Tom’s Guide praised the combat as well as Atsu’s revenge story. Together, those observations suggest a game whose immediacy comes from pairing physical encounters with a clear personal motive. They do not establish that its combat or story is unprecedented; the case for playing it rests more on execution and atmosphere than on a proven break from genre conventions.

Exploration and open-world design

Tom’s Guide’s main caution is that players accustomed to contemporary open-world games may recognize the structure. That is the key trade-off behind the epic metaphor: a memorable setting and cinematic presentation can make familiar activities feel compelling, but they do not necessarily make exploration mechanically fresh. The available reviews offer no formal benchmark comparing the game’s systems with other titles, so this is a judgment about familiarity, not a measured ranking.

Can you play Ghost of Yōtei on PS5?

Yes. The original game launched globally for PS5 on October 2, 2025. Sony’s launch announcement listed Standard, Digital Deluxe and Collector’s Editions. It gave launch-era US MSRPs of $69.99 for Standard and $79.99 for Digital Deluxe; those are historical launch prices, not a statement of current store pricing. What is included in Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition?

Sony announced the Complete Edition for October 1, 2026. The announcement describes a narrative expansion, a single-player combat survival mode and quality-of-life updates. It also clarifies that Watanabe Mode tracks are included in the free October patch, so that feature is not exclusive to the Complete Edition upgrade. The announcement mentions a high-contrast accessibility option as well. Because edition contents and patch availability can change, consult Sony’s current product and support pages before purchasing. Accessibility and subtitles

The official US product page specifies that subtitles cover the main story and main characters only; it does not promise subtitles for every piece of game audio or incidental dialogue. Sony’s accessibility information is the appropriate place to check current supported languages and control options, including any updates since launch. Who should play it?

  • Good fit: You want a visually ambitious PS5 adventure, enjoy samurai drama and exploration, and value atmosphere and action more than a wholly unfamiliar open-world formula.
  • Potential mismatch: You are mainly looking for a fresh approach to open-world structure, or you need broader subtitle coverage than the official product page specifies.

That recommendation weighs the two launch-era reviews rather than claiming a universal consensus. TechRadar also described its review as involving more than 55 hours of testing across PS5 Pro and PS5 Slim; that figure is the reviewer’s process, not an estimate of the game’s length or a general gameplay-duration benchmark.
