The Gigabyte Aero X16 is a stylish, genuinely portable gaming laptop—but it is not a full-power RTX 5070 machine. The reviewed configuration pairs AMD’s Ryzen AI 7 350 with an RTX 5070 Laptop GPU limited to up to 85W. That makes it considerably lighter and more office-friendly than many gaming laptops, but also slower than thicker RTX 5070 systems with more generous power budgets.
It is a good choice for buyers who value portability, an understated design, upgradeable memory, and a sharp 1600p display. It is a poor choice for anyone primarily seeking the highest gaming performance per dollar.

Gigabyte sells several Aero X16 variants, including models with RTX 5060 or RTX 5050 graphics, different processors, 16GB of memory, and a 1920×1200 display. Verify the model suffix, resolution, GPU, RAM, and storage before comparing prices. The official specifications are available on Gigabyte’s product page.

Design and portability
The Aero X16’s main selling point is its balance. At approximately 1.9kg and under 20mm thick at its maximum, it is much easier to carry than many higher-wattage RTX 5070 laptops. Its restrained styling and metallic chassis also suit a classroom, office, or meeting room better than a conventional gaming design.
The 16-inch 16:10 format provides useful vertical space for documents, timelines, and web pages without making the laptop excessively large. The keyboard has up to 1.7mm of travel and one-zone RGB lighting. It is comfortable for general typing and gaming, although the small arrow keys and lack of a number pad may bother some users. The large touchpad glides well, but its mechanical clicks are relatively loud.
Ports are a strength. Depending on the exact model, the platform includes HDMI 2.1, USB4 Type-C with DisplayPort and USB Power Delivery, three USB-A ports, Ethernet, and a 3.5mm audio jack. The 1080p IR webcam supports Windows Hello.
Display: sharp and fast, but not OLED-class
The reviewed WQXGA panel is one of the Aero X16’s best features. Its 2560×1600 resolution is sharp, the 165Hz refresh rate is useful for competitive games, and the 16:10 aspect ratio works well for productivity. Gigabyte rates it at 400 nits, 100% sRGB coverage, and a 3ms response time.
Notebookcheck measured approximately 403cd/m2 brightness, full sRGB coverage, around 1,234:1 contrast, fast response times, and no PWM flickering in its sample. Factory color accuracy was good, though the image had a slightly cool, blue cast.
This is a good screen for gaming, office work, web design, and sRGB-focused content creation. It is not a substitute for an OLED or mini-LED panel: blacks are shallower, contrast is lower, and HDR impact is limited. Visible backlight bleed was also reported.
Be careful with lower-cost Aero X16 models. Gigabyte also lists a 1920×1200, 165Hz, 300-nit panel. A review of the 2560×1600 model should not be used to judge that screen.

Gaming performance: the 85W RTX 5070 changes the equation
The RTX 5070 name does not tell the whole story. This Aero X16 configures the GPU at up to 85W, while many thicker competing laptops allow their RTX 5070 GPUs to consume substantially more power. The result is respectable performance, but not the performance buyers may expect from the badge.
Notebookcheck gave the tested configuration an overall gaming performance rating of roughly 84.5–84.8 points in its comparison tables. Selected 1920×1080 results included approximately 90fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at Ultra with FSR disabled, 109fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and 112fps in GTA V at high settings.
Tom’s Hardware recorded a more useful picture at the laptop’s native resolution:

In Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order at 2560×1600 and Epic settings, Tom’s Hardware saw frame rates above 100fps in outdoor areas, with dips into the mid-80s or 90s during firefights.
The practical verdict is straightforward: the Aero X16 is excellent for 1080p/high-refresh gaming and capable at 1600p with sensible settings. Demanding native-resolution ray tracing is a different matter. DLSS, frame generation, reduced settings, or a lower render resolution may be necessary. The 165Hz panel is not a promise that demanding games will run at 165fps.
The 85W ceiling is also why a well-powered RTX 5060 laptop can sometimes approach or exceed the Aero X16’s gaming performance. Buyers should compare GPU wattage, cooling, and benchmark results—not just the GPU number printed on the box. See the independent testing from Notebookcheck, Tom’s Hardware, and PC Gamer.
Ryzen AI 7 350 performance
The Ryzen AI 7 350 is an 8-core, 16-thread processor with boost speeds up to 5GHz. Reviews describe it as part of AMD’s Zen 5-based Krackan Point platform, although Gigabyte’s specification page primarily identifies the processor by model.

It is well suited to office work, programming, multitasking, and moderate content creation. In most games, the GPU power limit is the more important restriction. Benchmark evidence is mixed: PC Gamer reported weak single-core results in its testing, while Notebookcheck recorded solid productivity and application performance. Differences in benchmark versions, firmware, cooling, and power modes make it unreasonable to label the CPU simply “slow” or “fast.”
The NPU and Copilot+ branding may help with supported Windows AI features, but they do not make games faster. Gaming performance still depends mainly on the GPU’s power limit, cooling, drivers, and settings.
Creator workloads and storage
The portable chassis, sharp sRGB display, 32GB of RAM, and RTX acceleration make the Aero X16 useful for general creative work, photo editing in the sRGB color space, and moderate video projects. Its screen is less suitable for HDR video or wide-gamut photography because it lacks OLED or mini-LED contrast and coverage.
The included 1TB SSD is adequate for starting out but may fill quickly with modern games and creative applications. PC Gamer found the Kingston PCIe 4.0 drive in its test unit unusually slow compared with competing laptop storage. That result may not apply to every regional SKU, but it is a reason to check the exact drive rather than assuming the headline specifications guarantee premium storage performance.
Upgradeability
Upgradeability is a genuine advantage over many thin laptops. Gigabyte lists two DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM sockets, support for up to 64GB of memory, one PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 slot, and one PCIe Gen4x2 M.2 slot. Gigabyte lists up to 4TB of total NVMe storage, although exact support and factory configurations can vary by region.
- 32GB model: already comfortable for gaming and ordinary productivity.
- 16GB model: worth checking carefully; a second matching module may improve multitasking and memory bandwidth.
- 64GB upgrade: useful for video editing, virtual machines, software development, and heavy multitasking.
- Storage upgrade: adding a second PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive may be preferable to replacing the existing SSD.
Confirm the installed module layout and exact model before purchasing parts. Match DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM specifications where possible, and retain the original components. Upgrades should not automatically be described as voiding the warranty; check the warranty terms for your region.

The 85W GPU limit is both a performance compromise and part of what makes this laptop relatively light. The 150W power adapter and slim chassis reinforce the idea that the Aero X16 is designed for balanced mobility rather than desktop-replacement performance.

When frame rates seem unexpectedly low, check the obvious causes before assuming the hardware is faulty: battery operation, quiet or balanced mode, hybrid graphics, native 1600p rendering, ray tracing, missing DLSS or frame generation, outdated drivers, and thermal throttling can all matter. Performance mode may improve results, but it cannot transform an 85W RTX 5070 into a higher-power implementation.
Battery life and software
Battery results are strongly dependent on brightness, refresh rate, Windows power mode, graphics switching, and the test workload. PC Gamer recorded 109 minutes in its comparison test and described battery life as disappointing, but that figure should not be treated as universal office runtime.

For everyday use, battery life should be judged with the discrete GPU disabled and a balanced Windows profile rather than by gaming-on-battery expectations.
Gigabyte markets the Aero X16 as a Copilot+ PC with its GiMATE AI Agent, performance controls, privacy features, and Nvidia technologies such as DLSS 4. These are convenience and platform features, not substitutes for GPU power. Their usefulness depends on whether the software makes fan, power, graphics, and update controls easier to manage; they do not change the laptop’s fundamental 85W limitation.
Who should buy the Aero X16?
Buy it if you want:
- A relatively light 16-inch laptop for school, work, and gaming.
- An understated design rather than an aggressive gaming aesthetic.
- A sharp 2560×1600 165Hz display.
- Two RAM slots and two M.2 storage slots.
- Strong 1080p gaming and sensible 1600p gaming.
- A machine that can serve as both a productivity laptop and a gaming system.
Choose something else if you need:
- The fastest possible RTX 5070 performance.
- High frame rates with native 1600p ray tracing.
- OLED or mini-LED contrast.
- Excellent included SSD performance without upgrades.
- Long unplugged gaming sessions.
- A higher-power RTX 5070 laptop at a similar price.
Alternatives
A thicker RTX 5070 laptop, such as a suitable Lenovo Legion or LOQ configuration, is the better choice for maximum gaming performance. It will usually be heavier, louder, and less subtle, but its cooling and GPU power budget can be substantially stronger.
The Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 is a more premium thin-and-light alternative with attractive display options, though it is often more expensive and may provide less user-upgradeable memory depending on the configuration.

The Framework Laptop 16 is worth considering for buyers who prioritize modularity and repairability. MSI Katana systems can offer stronger gaming value in some configurations, but typically compromise more on chassis refinement, portability, or display quality.
Price verdict
Gigabyte historically promoted the RTX 5070, 32GB, 1TB configuration at $1,299.99 in the United States, reduced from a stated $1,649.99 price. That promotion does not establish the price or availability on August 16, 2026, so check the current retailer listing before buying.
- Near the historical $1,299.99 sale price: attractive if portability, professional styling, and upgradeability matter.
- At a midrange sale price: reasonable, provided a higher-power RTX 5070 laptop is not similarly priced.
- Near $1,649.99: difficult to recommend without a strong preference for the Aero X16’s lighter design and display.
Final verdict: The Aero X16 is a well-balanced portable gaming and productivity laptop, not a maximum-performance gaming laptop. Its screen, weight, styling, ports, and upgradeability are compelling. Its 85W RTX 5070, ordinary storage, limited contrast, and variable software experience prevent it from being an obvious value leader. Buy it when mobility is a priority and the price is meaningfully below full-power RTX 5070 alternatives.
