The Gigabyte GA-7VX rev. 1.0 is an ATX motherboard for AMD Athlon processors with a Slot A interface. It uses VIA’s KX133 chipset, accepts 3.3V SDRAM in three 168-pin DIMM slots, and provides an AGP 2x/4x slot alongside PCI and ISA expansion. The 7VX Series manual also covers the GA-7VX-1, so check the model and revision printed on your board before relying on compatibility details.

What processor does the GA-7VX support?

GIGABYTE specifies a Slot A socket for AMD-K7 Athlon processors and a 200MHz front-side bus. The board pairs VIA’s KX133 northbridge (VIA8371) with the VIA 686A southbridge (VT82C686A). Its manual states a CPU range of 500MHz to 1GHz and faster, while the product specification lists a selectable bus range of 100 to 143MHz. These are the manufacturer’s documented platform details, not confirmation that every Slot A Athlon or bus setting works on every surviving board.

For identification or restoration, match the processor’s Slot A interface and AMD-K7 Athlon family to the board; do not infer support for a specific CPU model beyond that without a matching compatibility listing. GIGABYTE’s GA-7VX rev. 1.0 specification and 7VX Series manual are the primary references.

What memory does it use?

The board has three 168-pin DIMM sockets for 3.3V SDRAM. GIGABYTE documents PC133 support and a total memory capacity from 32MB up to 1.5GB; the listed module sizes are 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, and 512MB, with ECC DIMMs also listed as supported.

OFFTEK 256MB Replacement Memory RAM Upgrade for Gigabyte GA-7VX (PC133) Motherboard Memory
  • Boost Your System’s Performance: Increase available memory for smoother multitasking, improved responsiveness and better performance when running memory-intensive applications.
  • Matched Specifically to Your Machine: OFFTEK selects the correct memory configuration for the computer shown in this listing, removing the uncertainty from choosing a compatible upgrade.
  • We Do the Technical Checking for You: There is no need to compare memory speeds, voltages, form factors or other technical details, as the upgrade has been matched to the machine’s supported requirements.
  • Extend the Life of Your Computer: Increasing the available memory can help your existing machine remain productive for longer, offering a cost-effective alternative to replacing the complete system.
  • Quick and Straightforward Upgrade: Memory is normally simple to install and requires no software installation; shut down and disconnect the machine before fitting and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Check both the module voltage and capacity before buying. The 1.5GB figure is the board’s stated maximum, not a guarantee that any arbitrary combination of three modules will work. Do not substitute 1.5V DDR memory: the manual specifies 3.3V SDRAM.

Which graphics cards and expansion cards fit?

The expansion layout consists of one AGP slot supporting 2x/4x, five 33MHz PCI slots, one ISA slot, and one AMR slot. The manual describes AGP operation at 66/133MHz and support for 3.3V and 1.5V devices. That does not establish compatibility with every AGP card: check the card’s electrical requirements and physical fit against the board before installation.

For period context, Tom’s Hardware reported that its tested GA-7VX sample had a plastic snap mounting for AGP 4x cards. The same review said that its sample did not work with VCM-SDRAM and suggested a BIOS update might help; this is one reviewer’s observation, not a general rule for all GA-7VX boards. See the Tom’s Hardware GA-7VX review.

Storage, ports, and onboard features

Two onboard bus-master IDE ports support Ultra DMA 33/66 modes and up to four IDE devices in total. The board also has a floppy connector, two serial (COM) ports, one parallel (LPT) port, PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports, and four USB ports; the manual lists infrared as optional. GIGABYTE identifies Creative CT5880 PCI sound, and describes the BIOS as AMI. Dual BIOS was optional, rather than a feature to assume on every board.

Will the board fit a standard ATX case?

The 7VX Series manual gives an ATX form factor measuring 30.6 × 22 cm. Confirm your case’s ATX mounting and clearance, and inspect the exact board markings: the manual applies to both GA-7VX and GA-7VX-1, while GIGABYTE’s specification page is specifically for GA-7VX rev. 1.0.

What to verify before restoring or buying one

  • Read the model and revision printed on the motherboard; do not treat GA-7VX and GA-7VX-1 documentation as proof that all revisions are identical.
  • For a CPU, confirm it is an AMD-K7 Athlon made for Slot A; the manufacturer’s broad stated range does not certify every processor model.
  • For memory, use 168-pin 3.3V SDRAM and verify individual DIMM capacity and configuration.
  • For a graphics card, verify AGP electrical compatibility rather than relying only on the 2x/4x label.
  • Inspect the board’s actual condition, connectors, and any optional features such as Dual BIOS; documentation does not establish the condition or completeness of a used board.

GIGABYTE announced the KX133-based GA-7VX as an ATX Slot A board with AGP 4x, five PCI slots, one ISA slot, four USB ports, and three PC133 SDRAM DIMM sockets in its launch announcement. The manual’s revision history is dated March 28, 2000.
