There is no supported, current ranking of the best Gigantamax Gengar counters. Build a team from eligible Max Pokémon that can exploit type and move advantages, then coordinate attacker, healer and tank roles. Gigantamax Gengar’s documented debut was a 2024 event; that announcement does not confirm when it will return.

What makes a Pokémon eligible for this battle?

Max Battles against Gigantamax Pokémon require Max Pokémon, and each Trainer can bring up to three. Gigantamax Pokémon retain their type, but the official guidance available here does not provide a Gengar-specific ranked counter list or a complete encounter-specific boss moveset. That means a single named “best counter” lineup cannot be established from these sources.

Instead, select from your eligible Max Pokémon by considering type advantage, whether their attacks are effective against the boss, their durability against its attacks, and how well they fit your team’s role. The official guide recommends powering up Pokémon and strengthening their relevant Max Moves; G-Max attacks deal more damage than Dynamax attacks. It does not identify an optimal Gengar lineup.

Prepare your team and assign roles

Coordinate with the other Trainers in your four-Trainer subgroup before the fight. The official strategy guide describes a practical role split, not a Gengar-specific tested composition:

  • Two attackers: focus on dealing damage with Pokémon and attacks suited to the matchup.
  • One healer: use Max Spirit during the Max phase to restore teammates’ HP.
  • One tank: use Max Guard to reduce damage to that Pokémon and draw the boss’s attention. Max Guard protects the user’s Pokémon; it does not reduce damage for the whole group.

Train the Max Moves you intend to use before spending resources on upgrades. The guide advises planning upgrades around the team’s needs rather than treating any one move as a universal answer.

Battle tactics: charge the Max Meter and use the right move

  1. Use Fast Attacks in the normal battle phase. The official Pokémon.com strategy guide says Fast Attacks fill the Max Meter more quickly than Charged Attacks.
  2. Move left or right to collect battlefield symbols. Watch the battle log for the boss’s upcoming attacks as you build energy.
  3. Use your three Max moves according to your role. Attackers should focus on damage; the healer can use Max Spirit, and the tank can use Max Guard to protect itself and draw attention.
  4. Adapt to the team’s condition. Coordinate before the Max phase so players use their available moves in ways that complement one another.

What happens if all three Pokémon faint?

If all three of your Pokémon are knocked out, they stay down until the battle ends. You can cheer while waiting, which helps your teammates build their Max Meter. For that reason, staying alive and contributing through your assigned role can matter as much as maximizing your own damage.
