Gigantamax Machamp is a Fighting-type boss, so Flying-, Psychic-, and Fairy-type attacks are super effective. Use eligible Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon that can deliver those attacks, then dodge, gather battlefield energy, and coordinate your Max moves. Niantic’s announced Gigantamax Machamp event took place on May 25, 2025; no return date is confirmed in the cited official announcement.
What is Gigantamax Machamp weak to?
Machamp is Fighting-type. Under the standard type chart, Flying, Psychic, and Fairy attacks deal super-effective damage against it. Prioritize a Max-eligible Pokémon that can use one of those attack types, but do not assume that type alone makes it the best choice: the boss’s move coverage, your Pokémon’s durability, and its level and Max upgrades also matter.
The official sources cited here explain Max Battle rules and announce Machamp’s event, but do not provide an official species-specific counter ranking. There is not enough official evidence here to name one universally best counter.
How to choose a team
Max Battles require eligible Pokémon, so a strong ordinary Pokémon is not automatically a usable counter. Build your party around these checks:

- Attack type: Favor Flying, Psychic, or Fairy attacks to exploit Machamp’s weakness.
- Max eligibility: Only Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon can enter a Max Battle; the Help Center says to select three Pokémon and include at least one Max Pokémon.
- Survivability: Consider whether a candidate can withstand the moves Machamp uses. A weakness-matching attacker that faints quickly may contribute less than a sturdier option.
- Battle role: Max Attack focuses on damage. If unlocked, Max Spirit heals and Max Guard reduces damage, giving the team support options in addition to attacking.
- Investment: Compare the Pokémon and Max Move upgrades you already have with the Candy and Max Particles needed to unlock or strengthen moves.
For its May 2025 event, Niantic recommended Dynamax Beldum as a strong contender against Gigantamax Machamp. That was event-specific preparation advice, not confirmation that Beldum or its Timed Research is currently available, and it is not an official ranking against every other option. How to beat Gigantamax Machamp in a Max Battle
Before entering
- Choose three eligible Pokémon for your party and make sure at least one is Dynamax or Gigantamax-capable.
- Favor available Max Pokémon whose attacks are Flying, Psychic, or Fairy type. Check their durability and existing Max Move upgrades as well as their attack type.
- Coordinate with nearby Trainers where possible. Official pages give conflicting maximum group sizes for Gigantamax battles, so a single global player cap should not be relied on.
During the regular battle phase
Tap to use Fast Attacks and build Charged Attacks; attacking also fills the Max meter. Watch for a targeting prompt and swipe to dodge when Machamp targets your Pokémon. Moving across the field to collect energy icons helps fill the meter faster. Official Pokémon GO Max Battle mechanics

During the Max phase
The Max phase lasts three turns. Use the opportunity to attack, and use Max Spirit for healing or Max Guard for damage reduction if those moves are unlocked. Gigantamax Pokémon can also have a unique G-Max attack. Candy and Max Particles are used to unlock and strengthen Max Moves, so consider those upgrades when preparing a team.
If your Pokémon faint
When all your Pokémon faint, you cannot select replacements and rejoin that same battle. You can cheer for active teammates instead, helping their Max meters fill faster.

If the group loses
You can retry while the Power Spot remains open. Max Particles are deducted only when the Power Spot Boss is defeated, according to the Help Center. Pokémon GO Help Center: Max Battles
After a win
Winning gives rewards and a chance to catch the boss. A caught Gigantamax Pokémon can be used in later Max Battles.

When was Gigantamax Machamp available?
Niantic announced Gigantamax Machamp’s Pokémon GO debut in six-star Max Battles for Sunday, May 25, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time. That event has passed, and the announcement does not confirm a future return.
The event also included a Timed Research encounter with Dynamax Beldum, available from May 19 at 6:00 p.m. through May 25 at 5:00 p.m. local time. Those dates and associated bonuses are historical event details, not current availability information. Niantic’s event announcement

How many Trainers are needed?
Official pages disagree about the maximum group size: the Max mechanics page says Gigantamax battles support up to 40 Trainers in groups of four or fewer, while the Help Center describes up to 20 Trainers. Because those official descriptions conflict, they do not establish one reliable global cap. Coordinate with nearby Trainers rather than planning around a single quoted maximum.
