Ghost of Yōtei Review: A Beautiful Sequel That Feels Too Much Like a Retread

Ghost of Yōtei brings Atsu to a striking new setting with polished combat, but its familiar open-world systems and segmented story may feel like a retread.

Ghost of Yōtei is worth playing if you want polished sword combat, striking scenery and a large world to explore—but it is not a major reinvention of Ghost of Tsushima’s open-world formula. In his September 25, 2025 review for Tom’s Guide, Rory Mellon praised its cinematic presentation, visuals and brutal combat while finding too few new ideas and a segmented campaign that can make the story feel repetitive.

Is Ghost of Yōtei worth playing?

That depends on what you want from a sequel. Mellon’s review describes a technically polished, visually impressive action-adventure whose strengths are familiar: combat, cinematic presentation and a broad activity-filled world. Its camps, upgrades, gear and activity checklist will feel recognizable to players of Ghost of Tsushima, and to anyone familiar with modern open-world games.

If you want more of that formula in a new setting, the familiarity may be a feature rather than a deal-breaker. If you are looking for a sequel that substantially changes how that world works, Mellon’s criticism is the key caveat: Ghost of Yōtei offers relatively few new ideas, and its divided campaign can make the story’s progression feel repetitive. Those are the reviewer’s judgments, not a claim that every player will respond the same way.

What kind of sequel is it?

Ghost of Yōtei stars Atsu, a mercenary in rural Japan in the 1600s. Sony describes the setting as 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, but Sucker Punch calls Yōtei a standalone experience rather than a direct continuation of Jin Sakai’s personal story; Jin does not appear. The studio framed Atsu’s story as one of healing and redemption as well as vengeance. In Sucker Punch co-founder and studio head Brian Fleming’s words, “Ghost of Yōtei is a story of healing and redemption that runs deeper than vengeance, told through the eyes of a new hero set in the breathtaking edge of Japan,” as quoted by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

#1 Best Overall
Ghost of Yōtei PS5
  • Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
  • Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
  • An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
  • Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.

That new protagonist and historical setting distinguish the game’s story from Jin’s, but they do not amount to a wholesale change in the open-world structure Mellon describes. The practical expectation is a new journey built on a recognizable foundation, rather than a direct story sequel or a radical mechanical reset.

How the combat and world fare

Mellon’s strongest praise is for the game’s presentation and combat. He describes the action as polished and brutal, and the world as sizeable and visually striking. He also notes particularly strong visual impressions on PS5 Pro; that is his review experience, not a standardized performance measurement.

Ghost of Yotei (PS5)
  • Discover a bold, new story of a warrior in Japan who is on her own mission of vengeance.
  • Set 300 years after the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone experience set in 1600s rural Japan. The story follows a haunted, lone mercenary named Atsu. Thirsty for revenge, she travels through the beautiful, rugged landscapes of northern Japan, hunting those who killed her family many years earlier.
  • Sixteen years after her family’s death, Atsu’s quest across Ezo brings her to unexplored lands in search of a gang of six outlaws, but she finds much more than vengeance. Throughout her journey, Atsu will discover unlikely allies, and greater bonds than she could have imagined.

The world’s scale comes with familiar open-world conventions. Camps, equipment and upgrades, and a list of activities give players plenty to do, but they also contribute to the sense that Yōtei revisits established patterns instead of replacing them. If you enjoy clearing locations and improving a character between story beats, that structure may suit you. If checklist-style exploration is already wearing thin, the review’s concerns about repetition deserve extra weight.

Does the campaign become repetitive?

Mellon’s concern is not simply that the game has optional activities; it is that the campaign is segmented in a way that can make the narrative feel repetitive. The result is a tension between cinematic storytelling and a progression structure that may interrupt its momentum. The review’s central trade-off is therefore clear: strong craft and atmosphere, but limited novelty and uneven-feeling story progression.

Platform, editions and features

PS5 release and controls

Ghost of Yōtei launched exclusively on PS5 on October 2, 2025. Sucker Punch says it is not planned for PS4 and supports PS5 Pro. Sony lists DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers as supported features. These are platform and feature descriptions, not independent performance tests. The original edition announcement covered Standard, Digital Deluxe and Collector’s editions; Sony’s 2025 announcement described the Collector’s Edition as including a digital game copy, an Atsu Ghost mask replica, sash, tsuba replica, coin pouch and Zeni Hajiki instructions, foldable papercraft, and art cards. That announcement does not establish what is currently in stock.

Complete Edition and free update

As of October 8, 2026, Sony’s announced Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition includes the base game, Legends, the Echoes of Sekigahara expansion, Most Wanted, Digital Deluxe content and the Charm of Hokkyokusei. Sony announced it for $69.99, with a $14.99 upgrade for existing owners; these are announcement prices, not confirmation of current store prices. Check your territory’s PlayStation Store listing for availability and price. Sucker Punch announced the edition for October 1, 2026; its page says the update arrived October 1 globally and October 2 in some territories, including Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Echoes of Sekigahara adds a narrative expansion that moves between Atsu’s present and past. Most Wanted is a single-player combat survival mode built around roguelike runs, bounties, perks and additional characters. The Complete Edition also includes Ghost of Yōtei Legends, online co-op for up to four players; online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus.

The free v.2.0 patch is not exclusive to Complete Edition owners. Sucker Punch says it adds Beauty of Yōtei mode, new Watanabe Mode tracks, an option to separate armor appearance from its stats, and a high-contrast accessibility option. The studio’s update notes clarify that the new Watanabe Mode tracks are part of this free patch.

Optional remote play

PlayStation Portal is one optional way to continue playing remotely, not a requirement. Sony says remote play requires a PS5, a PlayStation Network account and broadband Wi-Fi, with 5 Mbps as the stated minimum and 15 Mbps recommended for a better experience. Those are Sony’s platform requirements and recommendation, not a guarantee of identical results on every network.

Who should play Ghost of Yōtei?

  • Good fit: Players who want cinematic action, polished combat, a striking historical setting and a large world with plenty of activities.
  • Proceed with measured expectations: Ghost of Tsushima fans who want another adventure with familiar open-world systems, but should not expect a substantial reinvention.
  • Less compelling: Players who are tired of activity checklists or need a consistently fresh campaign structure; Mellon’s review specifically flags familiar conventions and story repetition.

For edition decisions, distinguish the game itself from optional additions: the DualSense features are supported on the standard PS5 controller, while Portal, themed hardware and collector items are not necessary to play. The Complete Edition’s added modes and expansion may matter to players seeking more content, but verify its current local price and listing rather than relying on the announced prices.
