For Giratina’s own moves, use Origin Forme as a Ghost-type raid attacker with Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball or Shadow Force; Altered Forme is better suited to PvP.
Giratina weakness: what types beat it?
Both Origin Forme and Altered Forme are Ghost/Dragon Pokémon. Their five weaknesses are Dark, Dragon, Fairy, Ghost, and Ice. The Pokémon Company International confirms the weaknesses for Origin Forme in its Pokémon GO raid guide; Pokémon GO Hub’s form references list the same weaknesses for Origin Forme and Altered Forme.
Those five types are a starting point, not a guarantee that every counter performs equally. A Pokémon’s stats, level, available attacks, ability to withstand Giratina’s moves, and same-type attack bonus all affect its practical value. When choosing among eligible attackers, Pokémon.com recommends prioritizing high CP and strong overall stats.

Pokémon GO Hub’s October 5, 2026 Origin Forme raid guide ranks these counters highly in its simulator. Treat the order as that guide’s model output, not a universal ranking: your available Pokémon, their levels and moves, and your raid group can change what works best.

The same guide also lists Black Kyurem, White Kyurem, Shadow Darkrai, Mega Mewtwo Y, and Shadow Garchomp as options. Use the strongest suitable attackers you can field rather than treating one named team as mandatory.
How to choose among your counters
- Favor strong Fast and Charged Attacks of one of Giratina’s five weakness types.
- When other factors are comparable, matching the Pokémon’s type to its attack can add damage through the same-type attack bonus (STAB).
- Consider the Pokémon’s level, overall stats, and survival against the boss’s moves; a type advantage alone does not settle the choice.
- Use group bonuses when available. Pokémon.com says Party Power boosts a Charged Attack, while a Mega-Evolved Pokémon boosts raid damage for participating Pokémon sharing its type while it is battling.
Pokémon.com states that STAB adds 20% damage. Its guide also notes that faster raid victories affect Premier Ball rewards, so bringing strong counters can help your group finish sooner as well as deal damage.

How many trainers do you need?
Pokémon GO Hub says an Origin Forme duo is possible only in a best-case setup with Best Friend bonuses, Party Play, and full teams of high-level counters. Its guide estimates three to six high-level players or six or more lower-level players. These are conditional estimates, not guarantees; counter strength and bonuses matter.
Best moveset for Giratina Origin Forme
Ghost-type raid role
For a Ghost-type raid attacker, use Shadow Claw with Shadow Ball or Shadow Force. Pokémon GO Hub’s Origin Forme database recommends Shadow Claw and Shadow Force. Pokémon.com says Shadow Force deals more damage; outside special events, it requires an Elite Charged TM.

Dragon-type role
For a Dragon-type attacking set, Pokémon.com lists Dragon Tail and Dragon Pulse. Choose the role and moveset that fit how you intend to use Origin Forme rather than assuming one set is best for every battle.
Altered Forme: prioritize PvP, not raid damage
Altered Forme has a more defensive profile and is more relevant in PvP than as a raid attacker in the cited references. Pokémon GO Hub describes it as a poor raid attacker and lists these PvP movesets:

Pokémon.com’s 2024 Origin Forme raid guide gives an initial catch range of 2,018–2,105 CP, or 2,523–2,631 CP with a weather boost; those are the guide’s stated catch ranges, not raid-counter recommendations.
