globcollationhost.dll errors may appear as:
- “The program can’t start because globcollationhost.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “globcollationhost.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading globcollationhost.dll.”
- “globcollationhost.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The 60-second answer
globcollationhost.dll is a Microsoft Windows component associated with globalization and collation, which means language-aware text sorting and comparison. Microsoft documents it in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 file tables, and Microsoft module information shows it loading from a Windows system directory such as C:WindowsSystem32.
Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run these commands in order:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows afterward. DISM repairs the Windows component store; SFC then checks and restores protected system files. Microsoft provides this procedure in its System File Checker repair guidance.
What causes the error
The message does not prove that the affected application owns the DLL. A program may simply be the first thing that calls a damaged Windows component.

Common causes include:
| Cause | What it means | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Missing or corrupted Windows file | The component was deleted or damaged | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Failed update or servicing operation | Windows did not finish replacing system files | Install updates, reboot, then repeat DISM and SFC |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software removed a genuine file or detected an impostor | Verify the path and Microsoft signature before restoring |
| Disk or file-system damage | Windows cannot reliably read the component | Back up files and check the drive |
| Wrong architecture or dependency | A 32-bit and 64-bit component do not match, or another Windows dependency is damaged | Repair Windows rather than copying DLLs |
| Malware or an impostor | A file with the same name was planted outside the Windows directory | Scan the system and do not copy it into System32 |
| One damaged application | Only one older program fails while Windows is otherwise stable | Repair or reinstall that application after Windows repair |
File versions vary with the Windows build, update level, language, and architecture. Microsoft’s documented Windows 8.1 examples include separate x86 and x64 files, so a similarly named DLL from another build is not automatically interchangeable.
1. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the correct first fix for a missing or corrupted globcollationhost.dll.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

DISM uses Windows servicing files to repair the component store. If it reports that the restore operation completed successfully, continue with SFC even if the original error remains.
Run SFC
In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and open the program that displayed the error.
A successful result usually reports that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If the application now starts, the system component was damaged and has been restored.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing whether the component store or the protected files changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problems behind repeated repair work and show what needs attention; its full version performs the repair, but it is not required, and Windows servicing remains the primary fix.

Run Windows Update first, restart, and try the standard DISM command again. If it still cannot obtain source files, Microsoft documents using a matching installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual repair-source path. The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, and architecture. Microsoft explains this process in its Windows image repair documentation.
2. Install pending Windows updates
An interrupted update can leave a system component in an inconsistent state.
Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Run DISM and SFC again.
- Test the affected program.
Windows 10
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart.
- Repeat the repair commands if necessary.
If the error began immediately after a particular update, open Update history and review the installed updates. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options explain when uninstalling a recent update or using System Restore is appropriate.

3. Check the file path, architecture, and signature
Do not treat every file named globcollationhost.dll as genuine.
Check the expected location
Open File Explorer and inspect:
C:WindowsSystem32
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit system components may also be managed through:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
The names are confusing: System32 commonly contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit system files.
A copy found in a program’s temporary folder, Downloads, a user profile, or an unrelated application directory deserves extra suspicion. Do not move it into System32.

Check Windows architecture
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select System → About.
- Find System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
You can also press Win+R, enter msinfo32, and check System Type in System Information.
Check file properties
Right-click the DLL, choose Properties, and inspect:
- Digital Signatures
- Details
- Location
A genuine Windows component should have a valid Microsoft signature when the signature tab is available. An unsigned file, a failed signature, or a suspicious location is a reason to scan rather than restore it.
Do not assume that a file’s displayed version proves compatibility. Windows components must match the installed build, architecture, servicing level, and dependencies.

Security software may quarantine a real Windows file after a false positive, but restoring files blindly is unsafe.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review detections involving
globcollationhost.dll. - Check the original path and detection details.
- Restore the file only if it is in a normal Windows system directory, has a valid Microsoft signature, and your security vendor confirms the detection is a false positive.
- Run DISM and SFC afterward.
- Perform a full Microsoft Defender scan.
If the file is outside a Windows system directory or has suspicious behavior, leave it quarantined and investigate it as a possible impostor.
5. Repair one affected application
If Windows itself is stable and only one old application reports the error, the application may be damaged or incompatible even though the DLL is a Windows component.
First complete DISM and SFC. Then:
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
- Otherwise uninstall the application.
- Download its installer from the developer or publisher’s official source.
- Install the version intended for your Windows architecture.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If the application is very old, try right-clicking its shortcut, selecting Properties → Compatibility, and using the compatibility troubleshooter. Do not replace the Windows DLL with a copy bundled on an unofficial download page.
Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not the default solution for this file. Install a runtime only when the application’s own documentation or error message identifies that runtime as missing.
6. Investigate disk corruption
If the error returns after DISM and SFC repair, Windows may be losing files because of storage or file-system problems.
Back up important files first. Then:
- Open Start, type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
cmd
chkdsk /f C:
- If Windows says the volume is in use, type
Yto schedule the check. - Restart the computer and allow the scan to complete.
A drive that repeatedly develops corrupted files should also be checked with the computer or drive manufacturer’s diagnostic tools. Replace failing storage only after securing a backup.

A driver is not the normal owner of globcollationhost.dll, but a damaged Windows installation or recent hardware change can create broader startup failures.
Use Windows Update first. You can also inspect Device Manager:

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click a device with a warning icon.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Avoid replacing unrelated drivers merely because the DLL error appears during startup.
Hunting through Device Manager for an outdated driver can be slow when several devices need attention. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver versions, while the full version performs driver installation; use it only as an optional convenience, not as a substitute for Windows repair or the hardware maker’s official driver.
8. Use Windows recovery if servicing fails
On supported Windows 11 installations, Windows Update may offer a repair reinstallation:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Start → Settings.
- Go to System → Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.
If that option is unavailable or does not fix the problem, use System Restore where available:
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Complete the wizard and restart.
Back up important files before using an in-place repair installation or Reset this PC. These are escalation steps for a damaged Windows installation, not the first response to a single application error.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRunning commands such as these can therefore produce another error without restoring Windows:
regsvr32 globcollationhost.dll
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor or Microsoft specifically confirms that the DLL is a self-registering component. For this Windows system file, DISM and SFC are the appropriate first tools. Microsoft documents the command’s intended scope in its regsvr32 reference.
Frequently asked questions
Is globcollationhost.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. Microsoft documents GlobCollationHost.dll in Windows file information for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2, with separate x86 and x64 examples. Its name is associated with Windows globalization and collation.
Should I download globcollationhost.dll?
No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture, or a version that does not match Windows. They also leave the damaged component store or underlying application problem unresolved.
Recommended Free Tools
Is this a Visual C++ or DirectX problem?
Not by default. globcollationhost.dll is a Windows component, not a standard Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. Repair Windows first.
Why does only one program show the error?
That program may be the only application using the damaged component, or its own installation may be incompatible. Repair Windows, then repair or reinstall the affected application from its official installer.
Should I copy a 32-bit DLL into System32?
No. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit components are commonly managed through SysWOW64, while System32 commonly contains 64-bit system files. Copying across directories can create an architecture mismatch.
What if DISM and SFC report that they found no problems?
Check the file path and digital signature, install pending updates, and determine whether only one application fails. If the error persists across Windows programs, investigate malware, disk corruption, and recovery options rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
