In a GamesBeat interview with Dean Takahashi, the game’s creative director explains how Kratos and Atreus became its emotional center, why the team chose a continuous camera, and how it rethought familiar series conventions. GamesBeat calls the transcript “full,” though it is edited.
What the interview covers
Dean Takahashi’s interview with Cory Barlog, then creative director at Sony Interactive Entertainment Santa Monica Studio, was originally published by GamesBeat on January 6, 2019, and updated June 19, 2025. Its six-page transcript is an interview-led account of the making of the PlayStation 4 game. Barlog’s explanations are his recollections of the creative process, not an independently audited production record. Read the GamesBeat interview.
The story began with a child beside Kratos
Barlog says he first imagined a child accompanying Kratos, without immediately explaining why. As the story took shape, the relationship between Kratos and his son, Atreus, became its emotional center. The Norse setting came later; it was not the starting point for the father-son premise.
For Barlog, that relationship made room to explore growing up, legacy, and the responsibility of passing knowledge to the next generation. He says his experiences with his own son and father informed parts of the story, alongside stories shared by members of the team. One rough test of whether a moment might resonate more broadly was whether other writers could relate to it.

- LATAM games have Spanish/English/French and sometimes Portugese available
- Kratos Starts Over- Living as a man, separated from the shadow of the gods, he seeks solitude in the unknown lands of Norse mythology. With a new purpose and accompanied by his son Atreus, Kratos must fight to survive among powerful forces that threaten the destruction of the new life he has created...
- A Whole New Beginning- His revenge against the Olympian gods is behind him and Kratos now lives as a man in the lands of the Norse gods and monsters. It will be in this raw and merciless world where he must fight to survive ... and where he must teach his son to do the same. This amazing re-enactment of God of War deconstructs the core elements that defined the series - satisfying combat, impressive scale, and compelling story - and combines them in a whole new way
- A Darker And More Elemental World- From marble art and the ornate columns of Olympus to the wild forests, mountains and caverns typical of pre-Iking Norse relief, the game presents a new and unique environment, with its own pantheon of creatures, monsters and gods . By placing more emphasis on exploring and discovering, the world will encourage players to delve into every corner of God of War's incredible but dangerous landscapes, which are undoubtedly the largest in the entire franchise
- Merciless Physical Combat- With a shoulder-height camera that brings the action closer to the player than ever before, the fights in God of War are very similar to the pantheon of Norse creatures that Kratos will have to face, as they are just as magnificent. , cruel and exhausting. A new primary weapon and unreleased skill set honor the typical God of War spirit
The approach also shaped how the game introduces its world. Barlog recalls wanting to begin without explaining everything at once: “We’re going to start, and we’re not going to explain everything right away.” The line captures a deliberate choice to let players encounter the characters and circumstances before receiving every piece of context.
Why the camera stays with Kratos and Atreus
The continuous camera was a major formal decision, not just a visual flourish. Barlog wanted players to retain control of the camera and stay present with the characters, rather than have a cinematic cut take them away from a moment. He believed that unbroken presentation would suit the intimate, personal story.

That intention created a communication challenge: Barlog says the approach was difficult to convey in short gameplay excerpts. A brief clip could show the technique, but not necessarily why sustaining the perspective mattered to the experience of being with the characters.
How the team reconsidered the series’ scale
Earlier God of War games often opened with a giant boss battle. Barlog says the team did not want to repeat that convention here. It sought a more grounded presentation that could make the game’s scale accessible without overwhelming the more personal story.

- Characters you love - take on the persona of characters from the God of War series including Kratos, Atreus, Freya, and more.
- Defeat epic monsters - each Quest is made up of a mosaic of double-sided cards. Players must work together to deal damage to the Monster in different ways, depending on the Quest.
- Branching paths - players choose which quests they want to try as they continue along. Unfinished quests will hinder them as they go along.
The same tension applied to the world itself. Barlog describes exploring ideas that became too complex or hard to explain, including a more elaborate arrangement of realms and water levels. The team then looked for simpler ways to make the setting understandable. The interview presents this as a process of shaping the game around clarity as well as ambition—not an attempt to remove its scale, but to make that scale easier to follow.
How long development took—and what the headcount means
Barlog recalls returning to the project in June 2013 and describes development through the game’s April release as just short of five years. Producer Yumi Yang counted four years by leaving out the first year of thinking and exploration. These are two ways the interview’s participants frame the timeline: one includes that early exploratory period, while Yang’s count does not.

GamesBeat reported that roughly 300 people worked on the game at Sony’s Santa Monica studio. That is the outlet’s reported figure, not an audited headcount. GamesBeat’s interview is useful for understanding how Barlog described the creative choices behind the game, but it should not be mistaken for a complete production ledger.

- The father-son idea preceded the Norse setting, and the relationship between Kratos and Atreus became the story’s core.
- The continuous camera was meant to preserve player control and closeness to the characters by avoiding cuts away from the action.
- The team questioned familiar openings and complex world-building ideas in pursuit of a more grounded, legible presentation.
- The timeline depends on what counts as development: Barlog’s account includes early exploration, while Yang’s four-year count excludes it.
