God of War Ragnarök is very highly reviewed: Metacritic’s PS5 listing shows a 94/100 Metascore from 141 critic reviews, labeled “Universal Acclaim.” The consensus is strong, not unanimous. Review excerpts praise the story, combat, and audiovisual presentation, while at least one critic points to slower stretches. The score is a snapshot of launch-era reviews; platform and store details can change.
Is God of War Ragnarök good?
The critical reception is exceptionally positive. Metacritic’s PS5 page reports a 94/100 Metascore from 141 critic reviews; its overall listing also showed an 8.3 user score from 16,878 ratings when accessed in 2026. Those are separate measures from separate groups, and both counts can change. The PlayStation Store separately showed 4.78 out of 5 from 209,473 ratings when accessed in 2026; PlayStation says store reviews come from verified owners and are evaluated by moderators. These scores should not be combined into one rating. Metacritic PlayStation Store

The excerpts Metacritic reproduces point to the elements that reviewers valued most: story, combat, and audiovisual presentation. They do not establish that every critic agreed on every strength, so treat them as examples rather than a complete account of the reviews.
What the reviews praise—and where they differ
Metacritic reproduces Gamer.no’s 100/100 excerpt: “Despite its shortcomings and eagerness to wrap things up, God of War Ragnarök feels like a better game than its predecessor in almost every aspect.” At the other end of the cited range, Edge Magazine’s 70/100 excerpt says slower stretches can make combat feel like “what you’re really killing is time.” These are individual outlet assessments, not a universal consensus about pacing.

Is God of War Ragnarök worth it?
If you value a story-led action game and the combat and presentation highlighted in the review excerpts, the critical consensus makes Ragnarök a strong candidate. If you mainly want consistently brisk pacing, the documented criticism of slower stretches is worth weighing. The review evidence supports a broadly enthusiastic verdict, not a guarantee that every aspect will suit every player.

How does accessibility compare on PS4 and PS5?
PlayStation’s current feature listings show 34 accessibility features for PS4 and 34 for PS5. Santa Monica Studio’s May 19, 2022 article described “more than 60 ways to adjust gameplay,” including control options, subtitle and caption size and color, and gameplay and cinematic captions. These are different ways of counting: the 34 figure is the number of features PlayStation lists for each platform, while the studio’s broader adjustment count is not a platform-by-platform total.

Ragnarök is the sequel to God of War (2018) and continues the Norse saga. The cited review evidence does not establish how well the story works for someone new to the series, so it cannot support a claim that prior play is required—or unnecessary. If you want the preceding story and character context, playing the 2018 game first is the straightforward route.
