God of War did return to its Greek-mythology roots—but the confirmed game, God of War Sons of Sparta, launched in 2026, not 2025. A March 2025 report had relayed an unconfirmed claim about a God of War side project planned for that year. PlayStation announced Sons of Sparta on February 12, 2026; the sources do not establish that it was the same project described in the earlier report.
What was reported in 2025—and what was confirmed later?
On March 24, 2025, MeriStation reported that journalist Jeff Grubb had heard a God of War “new side project” was expected that year and was not a remastered collection. The article also said Sony Santa Monica had not presented a new game at that point. This was attributed reporting, not an official PlayStation announcement. MeriStation’s March 24, 2025 report
PlayStation confirmed a Greek-set spin-off the following year. On February 12, 2026, Santa Monica Studio communications director Grace Orlady announced God of War Sons of Sparta and said it was available for PS5 that day. The formal release date on PlayStation’s product page is February 13, 2026. Santa Monica Studio’s announcement · PlayStation’s product page
The dates mark a real difference between the forecast and the confirmed release: the 2025 report did not come true as a release-year claim for Sons of Sparta.

What is God of War Sons of Sparta?
Sons of Sparta is a canon prequel about Kratos’s youth and training at the Agoge alongside his brother Deimos. Santa Monica Studio describes it as a 2D action platformer; PlayStation’s franchise page calls it a side-scrolling action platformer with puzzles and frames it as a return to the series’ Greek-mythology roots. Santa Monica Studio’s announcement · PlayStation’s God of War franchise page
The confirmed game therefore fits the broad idea of a God of War spin-off set in Greece, but that resemblance does not prove it was the unnamed side project Grubb’s report described. The official announcement and the 2025 report do not connect the two.

Is this the original Greek trilogy remake?
No. PlayStation also confirmed that the original Greek trilogy is being remade, but Santa Monica Studio said that project was very early in development and that further details would take time. The remake is separate from the released Sons of Sparta; the announcement does not identify either project as the subject of the 2025 side-project report. Santa Monica Studio’s announcement
