Who is Godfrey, First Elden Lord?
Godfrey, First Elden Lord, is both the former consort of Queen Marika and the warrior Hoarah Loux. He was Marika’s first Elden Lord, the leader of her armies, and one of the central figures in the rise of the Erdtree-era order. Near the end of ELDEN RING, he returns to challenge the Tarnished for the crown he once held.
Godfrey and Hoarah Loux are not separate characters. “Godfrey” is the restrained king created for rule; “Hoarah Loux” is the primal warrior beneath that identity. His late-game boss encounter makes that distinction literal, changing from a formal axe-wielding lord into a brutal wrestling champion.

Godfrey’s identity and titles
Before he became a king, Godfrey was Hoarah Loux, a ferocious warrior and chieftain whose defining trait was an appetite for worthy combat. When he became Marika’s lord, he took the beast regent Serosh onto his back. Serosh helped restrain Hoarah Loux’s constant urge to fight, allowing him to function as a ruler rather than an uncontrolled battlefield champion.
That history explains why Godfrey’s identity feels divided without actually being duplicated. His kingship is an act of self-suppression. The civilized First Elden Lord is Hoarah Loux choosing to live within the responsibilities of a crown, while the warrior remains visibly present in the form of Serosh and eventually emerges when the restraint is removed.
Godfrey should also be distinguished from Godrick the Grafted and Godefroy the Grafted. The similar names reflect their connection to the Golden Lineage, but they are different characters.

Godfrey’s political importance comes from his partnership with Queen Marika. He served as her first consort and led her armies during the campaigns that established the Erdtree’s dominance. His children with Marika were Godwyn the Golden, Morgott, and Mohg. These descendants form part of the Golden Lineage.
Godfrey’s legacy also reaches the Loux name carried by Nepheli Loux. The game does not conclusively establish their exact family relationship, so it is safer to describe Nepheli as connected to the Loux legacy than to state a definite parentage or close kinship.
The wars that made him Elden Lord
Under Marika’s orders, Godfrey led the War Against the Giants and helped secure the Mountaintops of the Giants. The campaign is tied to the historical rise of the Erdtree and the beginning of the age of Order ruled by Marika and her Elden Lord.
He also fought the Storm Lord, the last opponent associated with his great campaigns. When that final worthy enemy fell, Godfrey’s eyes began to lose their grace. The detail is more than a visual change: it suggests that his purpose as Marika’s conquering champion had been fulfilled.
Godfrey’s reign therefore rests on a contradiction. He was made king because he could win the wars that established Marika’s order, yet the very violence that made him valuable also had to be contained.
Why Godfrey was exiled
After Godfrey’s campaigns were complete, Marika removed his grace and sent him and his warriors away from the Lands Between. They were told to wage war in a distant land, live, and eventually die. This exile created the first Tarnished.
The word “Tarnished” originally describes Godfrey and the warriors who followed him after they lost grace. During the Long March, Godfrey’s axe was broken. The later use of axes by his warriors is presented as a sign of loyalty to their leader.

In exile, Godfrey returned to the name Hoarah Loux and became a chieftain of the Badlands. The kingly identity had served its political purpose; away from the Lands Between, the older warrior identity once again became central.

Godwyn’s death, the Shattering, and the return of the Tarnished
Godwyn the Golden died before the shattering of the Elden Ring and the collapse of the old order. Much later, the Tarnished were called back by lost grace. Their return fulfills Marika’s earlier promise that the exiled warriors would one day come back after death and wage war again.
Godfrey is among those who return. By the time the Tarnished reaches the Elden Throne, he has advanced from a distant historical figure into a living claimant to the old title. He mourns Morgott, recognizes the Tarnished’s strength, and still intends to reclaim an audience with Marika and become Elden Lord again.
Was Godfrey the first Elden Lord ever?
Godfrey is the first Elden Lord of Marika’s Erdtree-era order, but calling him the first Elden Lord in all history is too broad.
The Remembrance of the Dragonlord states that Dragonlord Placidusax was said to have been Elden Lord in the age before the Erdtree. The two titles can coexist when their historical eras are separated: Placidusax belongs to an earlier age, while Godfrey is the first Elden Lord of Marika’s Erdtree-centered regime.
This distinction also supports one of Godfrey’s most interesting themes. The Golden Order presents him as the beginning of its royal history, while the wider history of the Lands Between reaches further back than that official narrative.
Godfrey’s first boss encounter: the golden apparition
The first Godfrey encounter takes place in Leyndell, Royal Capital. The enemy is a golden apparition representing Godfrey in his earlier, lordly form. It is not the same present-day body later encountered at the Elden Throne.
This version carries an unbroken axe and fights with comparatively formal, deliberate attacks:
- Slow axe swings and sweeping strikes
- Stomps and ground-shaking attacks
- Area attacks that punish careless positioning
- A limited selection of longer-range or wide-reaching moves
The documented moveset emphasizes timing, spacing, and recognition of telegraphs. It is a fight built around learning when it is safe to attack and when the arena-wide impact of a stomp demands respect, rather than simply treating the encounter as a damage race.
Defeating the golden apparition during a standard New Game playthrough awards 80,000 runes and a Talisman Pouch. The encounter is also a required progression battle.

Godfrey at the Elden Throne
The second encounter occurs in Leyndell, Ashen Capital, shortly before the final battles. This time Godfrey appears as the living, returning warrior, with Serosh still on his back.
His first phase retains the visual language of the Elden Lord. He uses his axe, stomps the ground, and produces large shockwaves and area attacks. The fight is a more consequential version of the image presented by the golden apparition: the Tarnished is facing the former holder of the title they are trying to claim.
When the phase transition begins, Godfrey thanks Serosh and tears the beast regent away. The kingly restraint is gone. Godfrey becomes Hoarah Loux, Warrior.

Hoarah Loux, Warrior: the final phase
As Hoarah Loux, the boss abandons the axe-based presentation of the First Elden Lord. He attacks with wrestling grabs, lunges, leaps, and enormous ground-shattering area attacks. The change is not merely a second moveset attached to the same health bar. It is the return of the person Godfrey had been forcing himself to contain.
The phase therefore functions as the boss’s central narrative mechanic. First, the player must overcome the image of an Elden Lord: disciplined, armed, and politically legitimate. Then the player must survive the unrestrained warrior beneath the crown.
Defeating the encounter awards the Remembrance of Hoarah Loux and opens the route into the Erdtree’s final area.
What Godfrey represents in the story
Godfrey is a returned king whose legitimacy is inseparable from violence. Marika elevated Hoarah Loux because his strength could conquer the enemies standing between her and a new order. But to make that strength compatible with kingship, he needed Serosh, ceremony, and restraint.
Serosh is consequently both a loyal companion and a symbol of political containment. The beast regent shows that Godfrey’s civilized identity was never effortless. When Godfrey removes Serosh, the game reveals the cost of the crown and the warrior that the crown was designed to conceal.
His meeting with the Tarnished is also a succession ritual. Godfrey is not simply another late-game obstacle. He is the previous Elden Lord testing the person who wants to replace him. After the Tarnished defeats him, his judgment that their strength befits a crown turns the battle into a final validation by the old ruler.

The English voice of both Godfrey and Hoarah Loux is performed by Edward Rowe. The transformation is especially effective because the character’s two identities are expressed through more than costume and combat: the presentation shifts from royal authority to the raw physicality of the Badlands chieftain.

For a collectible specifically centered on this character, the strongest exact match is the official ELDEN RING Godfrey, First Elden Lord key art print. Bandai Namco’s America store describes it as an unframed 18-by-24-inch print on 250gsm textured paper, shipped in a protective tube.
Because current marketplace listings and stock can change, an Amazon search for Elden Ring Godfrey First Elden Lord poster is a more precise shopping phrase than a generic search for an ELDEN RING figure, game, or strategy guide. It names the exact character and points toward a physical collectible, although an exact current Amazon listing and its availability should be checked before purchase.
A broader collector option is Elden Ring: Official Art Book Volume I. The official Japanese announcement gives it a November 30, 2022 release date, a 432-page A4 format, and KADOKAWA as publisher. The translated English edition is described as a hardcover covering opening art, areas, dungeons, NPCs, and armor.
