Godot 4.3 RC 2: What Changed and Is It Safe to Test?

Godot 4.3 RC 2 focused on regressions and longstanding bugs across scripting, imports, exports, networking and rendering. Here’s what changed and how to test it cautiously.

Godot 4.3 RC 2 was a pre-release build published on 1 August 2024, chiefly bringing regression fixes and long-standing bug fixes ahead of Godot 4.3 stable. Its “safe fixes” label described the character of the changes, not a guarantee that the build would be safe for every project. Test it on a backed-up copy, especially if its fixes affect your scripting, imports, exports, or target platforms.

What Godot 4.3 RC 2 was

Release candidate 2 arrived one week after RC1. Godot’s release team described the candidate stage as the point when features were in place and the most critical regressions had been addressed, while community testing continued before the stable release. Changes since RC1 were mostly regression fixes or “safe” fixes to longstanding issues. Godot’s RC2 announcement credited 41 contributors with submitting 69 improvements for the snapshot.

That wording is best read as a description of incremental maintenance work—not a promise of zero regressions. A fix can be low-risk in intent and still interact unexpectedly with a particular project, plugin, import setup, or export target.

Which project workflows received fixes?

The official change list spans several parts of game development. These examples are useful if you are deciding whether the candidate addresses a problem relevant to your project; they are not the complete changelog.

  • Android export: RC2 fixed an export failure involving custom keystores when no JDK was configured in the operating-system environment. It also fixed an Android engine-termination crash.
  • GDScript: A bug that could clear local variables after execution left a while block was fixed.
  • Blender imports: The scene-import browse_dialog was corrected to accept files, and handling for empty scene-import settings was improved to avoid a crash.
  • Multiplayer and networking: Cleanup in disconnect_peer was corrected, and a WebSocket peer-reuse issue was among the other changes.
  • Windows rendering: The renderer can fall back to D3D12 when Vulkan is unsupported, and vice versa.

Other listed work addressed 3D editor selection, animation tracks, audio sample completion, GUI aspect-ratio division by zero, texture reimporting, OpenXR swapchain behavior, shader validation, and macOS process handling. Consult the official RC2 post for the linked complete changelog.

How to decide whether to test RC2

Start with the fixes that match your project, then consider the platforms and workflows you depend on. An Android developer using custom keystores, for example, has a direct reason to check that export path; a project that does not use Android should weigh other relevant fixes instead. A release-candidate announcement cannot certify compatibility with an individual project.

  • Identify whether an RC2 fix maps to a bug or workflow you actually use.
  • Test the platforms, renderers, importers, and export paths relevant to your project—not only whether the editor opens.
  • Keep the test reversible: use version control or a separate project copy and maintain frequent backups.
  • If you encounter a regression, check whether it has already been reported before filing a report.

Godot’s guidance treats a showstopping regression as a change that breaks something which worked in an earlier release and has no workaround. Known bugs can still remain in a candidate, so the practical question is whether testing is worthwhile for your project—not whether RC2 is universally production-ready.

RC2’s place in the Godot 4.3 timeline

Date Milestone
1 August 2024 Godot 4.3 RC2 announcement and downloads.
8 August 2024 RC3 followed with another round of regression fixes.
15 August 2024 Godot 4.3 stable was released.

The RC2 announcement offered standard and .NET desktop builds and export templates, and also referenced Android and web-editor testing options. It described the standard build as supporting GDScript and GDExtension, while the .NET build added C# support. These are the options described for that historical candidate, not a claim about current download availability. RC2 is not the current Godot release; it is a snapshot in the lead-up to Godot 4.3 stable.
