Google Maps on the NES: From 2012 April Fools’ Joke to 2021 Hardware Hack

Google never released a Google Maps cartridge for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Its 2012 NES-themed Maps announcement was an April Fools’ joke with an online demo; nine years later, maker ciciplusplus built an experimental version that ran on modified NES hardware with help from a Raspberry Pi graphics accelerator.

Was the original Google Maps NES cartridge real?

No. In 2012, Google presented an 8-bit Maps concept for the NES and Famicom as an April Fools’ joke and offered an online demo. The teased cartridge was not a retail product. Engadget’s coverage captured the original gag; the later project drew inspiration from it.

What arrived in 2021 was a hardware experiment

In 2021, the pseudonymous maker ciciplusplus created an interactive Google Maps-inspired implementation for an NES. It was a custom hardware hack, not an official Google or Nintendo release, a standard NES ROM, or a consumer-ready cartridge. Hackster’s report describes a Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+ inside a custom cartridge, serving as a graphics accelerator, and connects the approach to TheRasteri’s earlier NES Doom work. How the map was rendered in an NES style

According to Gizmodo’s August 27, 2021 report, the map conversion divided imagery into a 16×16 grid. The colors in each cell were averaged, then represented by a pixelated tile based on graphics from the original NES version of The Legend of Zelda. Place names were automatically generated in an NES-style font.

This method made recognizable, retro-styled map imagery, not detailed modern cartography. Contemporary coverage reported that users could scroll and zoom, but those controls do not make the prototype a practical replacement for phone navigation.

Why the project needed extra hardware

The Raspberry Pi-assisted design addresses the gap between the NES’s original hardware and the work involved in processing and drawing map imagery. Hackster notes that the NES has 2 kB of work RAM and 2 kB of video RAM. Rather than treating the Maps project as a normal cartridge program running entirely on stock hardware, its custom cartridge added a Raspberry Pi-based graphics path.

The related PiPU project documentation describes a Raspberry Pi 3A+ interfacing with the NES through a Cypress FX2LP controller that takes control of the Picture Processing Unit graphics memory bus. PiPU’s own architecture and build documentation explain the hardware lineage, but describe a separate accelerator project—not a complete parts list or build guide for ciciplusplus’s Maps implementation.

Could you buy it or build it from a guide?

Hackster reported in 2021 that ciciplusplus had not published a build guide and still had work planned: fixing a tile-rendering bug, adding missing functionality, and consolidating the electronics onto one cartridge board. Those are the project’s reported status at the time, not confirmation of its status today. The available reporting does not establish a Maps-specific kit, retail cartridge, or set of instructions for reproducing the build.

PiPU’s separate documentation describes a Raspberry Pi 3A+, FX2LP board, SD card, and donor or reproduction cartridge, and says its design works on stock unmodified NES consoles. That describes PiPU, not necessarily every component used in the Maps project or proof that the latter can run on a stock console without its custom hardware.

What “Google Maps on the NES” actually means

  • 2012: Google’s NES and Famicom Maps concept was an April Fools’ gag with an online demo, not a released cartridge.
  • 2021: ciciplusplus made an interactive, Raspberry Pi-assisted hardware prototype inspired by that concept.
  • In use: Contemporary reports described stylized map tiles, generated place names, scrolling, and zooming—not a turnkey navigation product.
