The custom board is described as supporting a Raspberry Pi Zero, Zero 2, or Compute Module 4, while connecting the PSP’s existing controls and providing for the screen backlight and speakers.
What is PSPi 6?
PSPi 6 is a custom electronics conversion project by othermod. Rather than adding new software to an intact PSP, the build replaces its original mainboard with a custom PCB designed to work with a Raspberry Pi. Hackster.io described the project as a work in progress and a DIY build requiring a board fabricated from project files, not as a verified ready-made retail kit. Hackster.io’s report is the source for the project details below.

How the replacement board works
The custom PCB takes the place of the PSP’s original mainboard. An ATmega8A microcontroller on the board acts as an intermediary between the PSP’s physical controls and the Raspberry Pi. The board also supports LCD backlight adjustment and speaker output, allowing the project to use parts of the original handheld’s interface and display-and-audio setup.
This is a hardware rebuild, so the Pi alone does not complete the conversion. The project depends on the custom PCB and a DIY assembly; the accessible report does not provide a current bill of materials, a full assembly guide, a price, or a verified source for components.

Which Raspberry Pi models does it support?
The report names three supported boards, grouped into two form factors. The PCB must match the board form factor; the options are not interchangeable without regard to the custom design.
| Board option | Form factor | What the report establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi Zero | Zero form factor | Named as supported by the PSPi 6 PCB. |
| Raspberry Pi Zero 2 | Zero form factor | Named as supported by the PSPi 6 PCB. |
| Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 | Compute Module form factor | Named as supported by the PSPi 6 PCB; the article characterizes Compute Modules as harder to find and more expensive than the Zero option, but does not establish current prices or availability. |
The article describes the Compute Module 4 as having the power of a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B in a card-like package. That is the report’s characterization, not a current performance comparison or a guarantee about how a particular PSPi build will perform. Verify current board compatibility, availability, cost, power needs, and assembly requirements before choosing a route.
What can it play?
The Hackster.io report says RetroPie can be installed and broadly describes emulation of computers and consoles up to the fourth generation, along with some fifth-generation systems. That description is not a compatibility guarantee: the report does not establish which specific systems, games, or settings work, nor does it provide performance testing. Check the requirements of the systems and games you care about rather than assuming every title will run well.

Is PSPi 6 a ready-to-buy PSP upgrade?
No ready-made kit or retail product is established by the report. At the time Hackster.io covered it, PSPi 6 was a work in progress, with project files described as available for PCB fabrication. Their present availability and the project’s current build status have not been verified. Anyone considering the conversion should first confirm that the files, board design, compatible components, and instructions are currently accessible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIn practical terms, this is for readers interested in a custom electronics project, not for someone seeking an easy way to expand an unmodified PSP’s game library. A Raspberry Pi Zero 2 is only one named component option; it is not, by itself, the upgrade.
