Google’s “Gamer ID” is the customizable identity shown through a Google Play Games profile—not a separate ID card or a universal login for every game. A profile can bring together supported games’ stats, progress, achievements and streaks, with a gamer name and image you can customize. Whether a particular game uses it depends on that game’s Play Games integration.
What is a Google Play Games Gamer ID?
Google’s current support materials call it a “Play Games profile.” The profile gives you a gaming identity on Google Play, represented by a gamer name and profile image or avatar. Google described the feature in its Q3 2025 update this way: “Our new platform-level gamer profile lets gamers easily track stats across games and devices.”
The profile can gather gaming information such as stats, progress, XP, streaks and achievements, and lets you follow friends and other players. Google places gaming information in the You tab in Google Play. Its Q3 2025 update also described a catalog of more than 200,000 mobile and PC titles; that is a catalog figure, not a claim that every title supports profile features.
How do you create a Play Games profile?
Google offers several ways to start. On Android, you may be prompted to create a profile when you sign in to a supported game or the Play Games app, during setup of a new device, or from the Google Account menu in Play. Signing in to Google Play Games on a Windows PC can also prompt profile creation. The setup flow provides a default name and image, which you can customize.

For current platform-specific steps, use Google’s Play Games profile setup and editing instructions. The exact interface can change and vary by device.
How do you change your gamer name or profile image?
You can edit your gamer name and profile image through the Google Play Store app. Google also supports changing the gamer name on the web. See the same Google Play Games profile help page for current instructions. Supervised profiles are restricted to auto-generated gamer names.

Can you use the profile with any game?
No. A Play Games sign-in button in a game indicates that the game supports using the profile. The profile may help bring progress and stats together across Android and PC, but game compatibility and how saves behave depend on the individual game and its integration. A Gamer ID is not a promise that every game account, save file or login will be linked.
Who can see your profile, and what information does Google handle?
You can make your profile public so other players can follow it and see updates. Google says it processes gaming activity such as games installed or played and time played, as well as some device and performance information. For certain games, Google may also receive information from developers, including achievements, leaderboard rankings, events and saved progress.

Participating game developers may receive profile information, activity within their game and purchases made in that game, subject to the developer’s terms and privacy policy. Google’s Play Games profile privacy and settings page explains visibility, data and account controls.
Community-list access
You can control whether games can access your gaming community list. If you allow access, Google says the game receives the gamer names of your mutual followers, not their email addresses. Participating games must use the list for user-visible community features, refresh or delete it within 30 days, and not share it with third parties except as required by law.

Deleting the profile
Google lets you delete a Play Games profile and its associated profile data. Profile activity is separate from Web & App Activity, so deleting the profile does not automatically delete that other activity. Review Google’s privacy and settings guidance before changing or deleting data.

Switching Google accounts
Changing the default Google account for all games may make previous progress and settings inaccessible. Google says switching the account only for new games avoids losing access to earlier progress, though progress can then be split between accounts. Check the account selected for a game before changing sign-in settings.

Supervised profiles
Supervised profiles can use only auto-generated gamer names, and Google says they do not have the Play Games followers feature.
Rollout and regional availability
Google’s September 23, 2025 announcement said the integrated Play gaming platform and You tab would begin rolling out that week in select Play Points markets, with more countries added October 1. That announcement does not establish a complete current country list or universal availability. Check the Play Store and Google’s current profile help page for what is available to your account and device.
