Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online launched for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on March 15, 2022. They are not new releases in 2026. You can buy the full Grand Theft Auto V edition, which includes Story Mode and GTA Online, or get GTA Online separately. Rockstar also describes a one-time way for existing players to migrate Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters and progression to the newer consoles.
Which edition should you get?
Rockstar lists two options for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The key difference is whether Story Mode is included:

Check the platform and edition on the product listing before purchasing: the standalone GTA Online edition is not the same as the full game. Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto V product page describes both options. Store prices and availability vary by region and are not specified here.
What’s different on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S?
Rockstar advertises current-generation graphics modes with resolutions up to 4K and frame rates up to 60 frames per second, along with HDR options, ray tracing, faster loading and 3D audio. These are publisher-described capabilities, not independent performance measurements or a guarantee that every mode combines every feature.

Rockstar specifically lists DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers for PS5. That feature description is platform-specific; it does not establish an equivalent Xbox controller feature or mean you need to buy a new controller. Can you transfer a character or progress from an older console?
Rockstar says existing players can transfer both GTAV Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters and progression to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S through a one-time migration. The product page does not explain every account or platform-history eligibility case, so players with unusual transfer histories should check Rockstar Support before relying on a migration.

If you are starting fresh, you do not need an existing character to play; choose the edition that matches whether you also want Story Mode.
What is GTA Online?
GTA Online is Rockstar’s online multiplayer world for up to 30 players. Its activities include cooperative heists, races and adversary modes, as well as social spaces. Online play requires an internet connection and a Rockstar account. The available activities and platform requirements can change, so check the current console-store listing and Rockstar Support for up-to-date details.

When did the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions launch?
The current-generation versions of Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online launched on March 15, 2022, according to Rockstar’s official product page. Rockstar’s support notes also record platform-specific fixes and content updates after launch; the rolling support notes include entries through May 2025, so a dated entry should be read as evidence of a specific update, not proof that an issue remains current.
