GPD opened its Indiegogo campaign on September 25, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. UTC+8—but that was the crowdfunding and ordering date, not a guaranteed delivery date.
GPD initially estimated that backers would receive their units in November or December 2025. The company later documented its first shipment on November 20, 2025, and now describes the Win 5 as officially released. In other words, the September 2025 announcement is historical; buyers today must check the seller, configuration, stock, warranty, shipping, and final delivered price.

For comparison, the Chinese 385/32GB/1TB configuration was announced at about CNY 8,699, or approximately $1,225 at the time. That is not the global price. The roughly $223 difference between the Chinese and global figures is also not a complete estimate of an imported buyer’s final cost.
GPD’s campaign documentation once listed a $649 value on a customs invoice for one shipment. That was a declared customs amount, not the purchase price or the product’s retail value.
See the original pricing report at Notebookcheck, and verify current availability through the official GPD product page, GPD Store, or the Indiegogo campaign.
When did the GPD Win 5 launch?
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| July 2025 | GPD announced or teased its Strix Halo-powered handheld. |
| September 2, 2025 | GPD published its official release announcement. |
| September 18, 2025 | Global pricing and the Indiegogo schedule were reported. |
| September 25, 2025 | The Indiegogo campaign opened at 10:00 a.m. UTC+8, or 2:00 a.m. UTC. |
| November–December 2025 | GPD’s original expected window for initial backer shipments. |
| November 20, 2025 | GPD reported shipping the first 75 units of a Ryzen AI Max+ 395, 32GB/2TB configuration. |
| August 18, 2026 | The Win 5 was treated as an released and shipping product rather than an unreleased announcement. |
The important distinction is between campaign launch, shipment, and retail availability. An Indiegogo opening date means customers can back or order through that campaign; it does not by itself guarantee immediate dispatch, a fixed delivery date, or the same protections as buying from a conventional retailer. GPD’s later shipping update confirms that at least some units began leaving the factory, but the first 75-unit shipment does not prove that all backers shipped at the same time.
GPD’s official update on the product’s release and shipping history is available at GPD. The campaign’s shipment update is available at Indiegogo.

- Immersive High-Refresh-Rate Display: Game on a vibrant, high-resolution display with a smooth refresh rate, bringing every frame to life with exceptional clarity and reduced motion blur for a truly competitive gaming experience.
What makes the Win 5 so expensive?
The Win 5 is not positioned as a cheaper Steam Deck alternative. Its price reflects a high-end AMD platform, unusually large memory options, a high-power cooling and power design, and a removable 80Wh external battery.
- Processors: AMD Ryzen AI Max 385 or Ryzen AI Max+ 395, depending on configuration.
- Graphics: The 395 model is advertised with integrated Radeon 8060S graphics.
- Memory: GPD advertises up to 128GB of LPDDR5x-8000 memory.
- Storage: Advertised maximum configurations reach 4TB, with a built-in mini SSD expansion slot also promoted by GPD.
- Display: A 7-inch panel with a 120Hz refresh rate.
- Wireless: Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 on GPD Store listings.
- Controls: Capacitive analogue sticks and Hall-effect triggers.
GPD also markets the Win 5 as a portable workstation as well as a gaming handheld. Large unified-memory configurations can be useful for integrated graphics, development, virtual machines, and local AI experimentation. They do not automatically make every game run faster, however, and most games will not need 128GB.
GPD uses ambitious language such as “world’s first” and “most powerful” in its marketing. Those are company positioning claims, not independently audited conclusions. The processor’s specifications also should not be confused with measured Win 5 game performance.
The 128GB RAM caveat
There are three different claims to keep separate: the maximum GPD advertises, the configurations shown during the original campaign, and what a particular retailer sells today.
The initial global launch lineup was reported to top out at 64GB, while the 128GB version was absent or reserved for a later release. Later GPD material advertised configurations of up to 128GB. Therefore, a listing that says “Win 5, up to 128GB” does not establish that a 128GB unit was part of the September 2025 launch or that it is available from every seller.

How powerful is it in practice?
Strix Halo offers considerably more integrated-GPU resources than mainstream handheld platforms such as the Ryzen Z1 Extreme, and the Win 5 is designed to sustain higher power than typical 15–30W handheld PCs. That gives the 395 version a much higher performance ceiling than conventional budget and midrange handhelds.
Actual results still depend on the game, resolution, graphics preset, upscaling, power mode, cooling, memory allocation, driver version, and whether the external battery is connected. A 120Hz display can refresh 120 times per second; it does not mean modern AAA games will produce 120 frames per second.
The sensible performance expectation is high-quality 1080p gaming in suitable titles, sometimes with upscaling or reduced settings. That is a capability target, not a guaranteed frame-rate claim. The 395 is the performance flagship, while the 385 is likely the more rational choice for buyers who do not need the maximum graphics configuration. A precise percentage difference between them requires comparable independent testing.
The external 80Wh battery is the defining compromise
The Win 5’s removable external battery helps explain both its performance ambitions and its unusual physical design. GPD’s FlexPower system is intended to let the handheld operate with the battery attached or detached through a wired connection.

Potential advantages
- An 80Wh pack provides substantially more energy than the internal batteries commonly found in handheld PCs.
- The main handheld body can be smaller and lighter when the pack is removed.
- A spare battery could extend a trip without waiting for the first pack to recharge.
- The battery helps support the platform’s higher power demands.
Practical disadvantages
- With the battery attached, the complete gaming setup is heavier and bulkier.
- With the battery detached, a cable connects the pack to the handheld.
- The design is less self-contained and console-like than a Steam Deck or ROG Ally.
- Battery availability, replacement pricing, charging behavior, and long-term support become important ownership concerns.
GPD later explored an extension-cable solution after concerns about the battery arrangement, reinforcing that this is a meaningful usability trade-off rather than a minor specification detail. GPD advertises a body weight as low as approximately 565g, but buyers should check whether the quoted figure excludes the removable battery. The weight of the complete gaming setup is the more useful number for travel decisions.
Ryzen AI Max 385 versus Ryzen AI Max+ 395
| Choose the 385 if you… | Choose the 395 if you… |
|---|---|
| Want the lower entry price. | Want the highest integrated graphics performance available in the Win 5 range. |
| Are satisfied with the 32GB/1TB starting configuration or a modest upgrade. | Are comfortable paying at least approximately $1,650 before possible extras. |
| Value the platform and memory capacity more than maximum frame rates. | Plan to use a higher power budget and demanding games or creative workloads. |
The 385 and 395 are part of the same broad platform family, but the 395 model is the one associated with Radeon 8060S graphics and the maximum advertised configurations. Do not assume that the lowest-priced 385 model has the same graphics resources, memory, or storage as a 395 listing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the Win 5 better value than mainstream handhelds?
That depends on what “value” means. Against Ryzen Z1 Extreme handhelds, the Win 5’s appeal is its performance ceiling, memory capacity, and battery concept—not a low purchase price. Mainstream products from Lenovo and ASUS generally offer a larger retail footprint and more familiar support channels, while the Win 5 targets enthusiasts willing to accept a more specialized Windows PC.
A Lenovo Legion Go or ASUS ROG Ally family device may be easier to buy, return, and service. A Steam Deck offers a more established console-style Steam experience, though its peak hardware performance is in a much lower tier. AYANEO’s Next 2 is a closer premium Strix Halo competitor; its reported starting price of $1,799 places it in the same enthusiast category.

Windows-handheld considerations
The Win 5 runs Windows, not a dedicated console operating system. That provides access to PC storefronts and applications, but buyers should expect some friction:
- Desktop navigation is awkward on a 7-inch screen.
- Different launchers may compete for controller focus.
- Sleep and resume behavior can vary between Windows, drivers, and games.
- Driver, firmware, and TDP-control updates require attention.
- Some tasks are easier with a keyboard, mouse, dock, or external display.
- Anti-cheat systems and game-specific compatibility can affect handheld play.
These are Windows-handheld considerations, not confirmed Win 5-specific defects. They matter because the Win 5’s premium price may lead buyers to expect the simplicity of a console, while the product is fundamentally a powerful, compact Windows computer.
Who should buy the GPD Win 5?
The Win 5 makes the most sense for an enthusiast who specifically wants the fastest integrated graphics platform in a handheld PC, unusually large unified memory, and a detachable high-capacity battery. It may also suit developers, emulation users, and people who want one compact Windows machine for gaming and demanding desktop work.
It is a poor fit for buyers seeking the lowest price per frame, a polished console interface, easy local returns, extensive mainstream-brand support, or a light one-piece travel device. Players whose libraries are mostly indie, older, or less demanding games may gain little from paying for the 395 model and enormous memory capacities.
What to check before ordering
- Confirm whether the listed price is a current retail price, an Indiegogo perk, or an old launch figure.
- Check the exact processor, RAM, and SSD configuration.
- Confirm whether the external 80Wh battery is included.
- Add shipping, VAT, sales tax, customs, and possible import fees.
- Read the seller’s warranty, repair location, return window, and return-shipping terms.
- Check whether the dock, spare battery, charger, case, and cables are included.
- Compare the total delivered cost with a mainstream handheld, a competing premium handheld, and a gaming laptop.
The Bottom Line
The GPD Win 5 is an enthusiast product, not a value handheld. Its September 25, 2025 date was the opening of its Indiegogo campaign, with global pricing starting at about $1,448 for the Ryzen AI Max 385 model and about $1,650 for 395 configurations. The hardware can justify that premium for buyers who need exceptional integrated performance, memory capacity, or the removable 80Wh battery—but for most players, a conventional handheld or gaming laptop will offer a simpler and better-balanced purchase.
