GPD’s WIN 5 is a Windows 11 handheld gaming PC built around AMD’s 16-core Ryzen AI Max+ 395 and its integrated Radeon 8060S graphics. The combination promises far more CPU and GPU headroom than conventional low-power handhelds, but it also explains the WIN 5’s unusual design: its 80Wh battery is detachable and mounted externally rather than built into the chassis.

GPD describes the WIN 5 as the world’s first Ryzen AI Max+ 395 handheld. That is a company claim, not an independently certified industry designation. The more important buying question is whether a premium, high-power portable PC is preferable to a lighter handheld with a conventional internal battery.

That is a much larger integrated graphics configuration than the GPUs used in many mainstream handheld PCs. The chip supports a 256-bit LPDDR5X memory interface and up to 128GB of memory, giving the integrated GPU a larger pool of high-bandwidth unified memory to use.

AMD lists a 55W default TDP and a configurable processor range of 45W to 120W. Those are chip-level figures, not a guarantee that the WIN 5 will sustain 120W. GPD separately lists a 45W–75W range for the handheld, so buyers should not treat AMD’s maximum as the device’s normal operating mode.

The processor also includes an NPU rated at up to 50 TOPS, with up to 126 overall AI TOPS claimed by AMD. Those figures are relevant to supported AI workloads, but TOPS is not a gaming benchmark and does not translate directly into frame rates.

Early Indiegogo plans versus current retail options

The initial disclosure reported by HotHardware described three proposed Indiegogo combinations:

  • Ryzen AI Max 385 with 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage
  • Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with 32GB of RAM and 2TB of storage
  • Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with 64GB of RAM and 4TB of storage

At that stage, GPD was still considering a 128GB model. Later retail listings expose a broader selector, including the Ryzen AI Max 385 and Ryzen AI Max+ 395, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB memory options, and 1TB, 2TB and 4TB storage choices.

When checked for this report, GPD’s store showed a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 configuration at $2,432.95 and another displayed 64GB/2TB configuration at $2,752.95. These are configuration-dependent observed prices, not permanent MSRP, and can change with stock, region and seller.

Read the original configuration report at HotHardware or check GPD’s current WIN 5 listing.

A 1080p, 120Hz handheld display

GPD’s technical specifications list a 7-inch LTPS panel with a 1920×1080 resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. The display supports 10-point touch input, 500-nit brightness, 100% sRGB coverage, AMD FreeSync Premium, a 6ms response time, native landscape orientation and Corning Gorilla Glass 6.

A 120Hz panel can make compatible games and the Windows desktop feel smoother, but it does not mean every modern game will run at 120 frames per second. Actual performance depends on the game, resolution scaling, graphics settings, driver support, memory allocation, power mode and thermal limits. GPD’s “true 1080p/120Hz gaming” language should therefore be treated as marketing, not a universal performance guarantee.

Why the battery is mounted outside

The WIN 5’s defining feature is its detachable 80Wh battery. It can be attached to the rear of the handheld or connected by cable. The device can also be used from wall power, and GPD presents the system as usable without the battery for a lighter setup, subject to the power and performance requirements of the chosen mode.

  • [Advanced Cooling System] Equipped with the Frostwind dual-fan and quad-heat pipe hybrid architecture, the system efficiently manages thermals even at 100W+ TDP. This prevents performance throttling during long, intense gaming sessions.

This design is closely tied to the Ryzen AI Max+ 395’s power demands. A conventional handheld battery would add considerable weight, volume and thermal pressure to an already powerful system. Moving the battery outside the main chassis gives GPD more flexibility for cooling and makes battery replacement or swapping more practical.

The trade-off is important: the advertised approximately 565g weight excludes the battery. The complete gaming setup is therefore heavier than the bare handheld figure suggests. Users must also carry the battery module or a cable, and potentially the 180W adapter for longer high-performance sessions.

GPD’s store says one battery is included and that additional batteries are available separately, but buyers should verify the exact bundle and whether replacement packs are sold in their region. Tom’s Hardware also reported that the system requires an external battery or wall power, highlighting how unlike a conventional integrated-battery handheld the WIN 5 is.

Ports, storage and controls

GPD’s current retail material lists a dual-fan, quad-heat-pipe cooling system, USB4 connectivity up to 40Gbps, USB 3.2 ports, HDMI 2.1, microSD expansion, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.

The WIN 5 also includes a full-size M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe slot and a mini-SSD expansion slot. That gives it more storage flexibility than a device restricted to a small soldered drive, although the available expansion hardware and installation process should be confirmed before purchase.

Is 128GB useful for gaming?

Large memory configurations are one of the WIN 5’s more unusual options. For ordinary gaming, 32GB is already substantial, while 64GB provides additional room for demanding games, background applications and mod-heavy setups. A 128GB model is more compelling for local AI experiments, virtual machines, content creation and workstation use than for simply increasing game frame rates.

Because LPDDR5X memory is generally not user-upgradeable like desktop DIMMs, capacity is a decision made at purchase. More memory can also help an integrated GPU by providing a larger unified pool, but it does not automatically make a 128GB model better value for gaming. Price, power limits and graphics settings remain the dominant factors.

What performance should buyers expect?

The WIN 5 has the hardware foundation for unusually strong handheld performance: a 16-core Zen 5 processor, a 40-compute-unit Radeon 8060S and high-bandwidth unified memory. It is also better suited than typical handhelds to CPU-heavy games, emulation, development tools, AI workloads and desktop multitasking.

That does not establish a universal frame-rate advantage. Sustained results will depend on the selected power profile, cooling, firmware, drivers, game engine and display resolution. AMD’s processor specifications, GPD’s advertised capabilities and independent game testing answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Similarly, GPD’s comparison language, including claims about exceeding a PlayStation 5 Slim, needs a defined metric and test condition before it can be meaningfully evaluated. A console comparison based on theoretical compute, a single game or a particular power setting would not describe every use case.

Price and practical trade-offs

The WIN 5 is not positioned as a low-cost Steam Deck alternative. The observed retail prices above place it far above mainstream handheld gaming PCs, before considering extra batteries, docks, displays or other accessories.

Reasons to consider the WIN 5

  • Much higher CPU and integrated-GPU potential than ordinary low-power handheld platforms.
  • Large unified-memory options up to 128GB.
  • A 7-inch 1080p/120Hz display.
  • Detachable, replaceable and potentially swappable battery hardware.
  • Windows compatibility for games, productivity software and workstation tasks.
  • USB4, HDMI 2.1, expandable storage and a full-size PCIe 4.0 NVMe slot.

Reasons to hesitate

  • The price is far above conventional handhelds.
  • The complete system is heavier and less console-like once the external battery is attached.
  • High power draw raises practical questions about runtime, fan noise, heat and sustained performance.
  • LPDDR5X memory must be selected carefully because it is not a normal user-upgradeable module.
  • A 120Hz display does not guarantee 120fps gaming.
  • Battery availability, replacement cost and regional warranty support matter more than they do on a typical integrated-battery handheld.

Who is the GPD WIN 5 for?

The WIN 5 makes the most sense for enthusiasts who want the highest possible integrated-graphics performance in a portable Windows computer and are willing to accept an external battery, premium pricing and a less conventional setup. It may also appeal to AI users and creators who can make practical use of 64GB or 128GB of unified memory.

It is a weaker fit for buyers seeking a light, inexpensive, plug-and-play console experience. Devices such as the ASUS ROG Ally X offer a more conventional integrated-battery design, while the Steam Deck OLED emphasizes lower-power gaming and a more controlled software ecosystem. Other Ryzen Z-series handhelds are typically easier to carry and less expensive, although they generally offer less CPU and integrated-GPU headroom.

What “world’s first” should mean here

GPD calls the WIN 5 the world’s first handheld based on the Ryzen AI Max+ 395. The safest description is that it was the first widely reported and marketed handheld built around that processor. “First announced,” “first shown” and “first to ship” are different milestones, and there is no indication that an independent industry body certified the claim.

Availability and buying checklist

Before ordering, confirm:

  1. The exact processor: Ryzen AI Max 385 or Ryzen AI Max+ 395.
  2. Memory and storage capacity, especially because LPDDR5X memory is not normally replaceable.
  3. Whether the selected bundle includes the 80Wh battery.
  4. The quoted weight and whether it excludes the battery and accessories.
  5. Current price, shipping charges, taxes and regional warranty terms.
  6. Whether additional batteries are available from a seller that can ship to your location.
  7. The power profile you expect to use rather than assuming the chip’s maximum 120W range applies to the handheld.

GPD’s official technical specifications provide the current chassis details, while the retail page should be checked for live configurations and pricing.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
