The GPD Win 5 is a real Windows handheld gaming PC available with AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395 and its integrated Radeon 8060S graphics. That combination gives it far more CPU and GPU headroom than conventional 15–30 W handhelds, but it comes with serious trade-offs: a removable external battery, high weight when the battery is attached, heat and fan noise at high power, and a price that can overlap with gaming laptops.
The most important clarification is that the Radeon 8060S is not a separate graphics card. It is a 40-compute-unit integrated GPU sharing high-speed unified memory with the Ryzen processor. The Win 5 can be exceptionally fast for a handheld, but its results depend heavily on the selected CPU, TDP, cooling, memory configuration, drivers, and whether it is running from its battery or a high-wattage adapter.

What the GPD Win 5 actually is
The GPD Win 5 is a compact Windows 11 gaming PC with built-in controls, a 7-inch 1920×1080 display, and a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz with variable-refresh support. Unlike some earlier GPD Win models, it uses a landscape-oriented screen and omits the physical keyboard. Its controls include capacitive analog sticks, triggers, rear trigger-mode switches, and a small optical finger mouse.
It is designed to work both as a handheld and as a compact desktop PC when connected to a monitor, dock, keyboard, and mouse. That flexibility is useful, but the Windows interface and the lack of a built-in keyboard make it less self-contained than older keyboard-equipped GPD designs.

Ryzen AI Max+ 395 versus Ryzen AI Max 385
“Supports up to Ryzen AI Max+ 395” means the 395 is the highest configuration, not that every GPD Win 5 contains it.
| Configuration | CPU | Integrated GPU |
|---|---|---|
| Flagship | Ryzen AI Max+ 395 | Radeon 8060S |
| Lower configuration | Ryzen AI Max 385 | Radeon 8050S |
Buyers should check the processor and GPU together. A listing for a Ryzen AI Max 385 is not a Radeon 8060S system, even though it uses the same general Win 5 platform.

What Radeon 8060S graphics means
The Radeon 8060S is the Ryzen AI Max+ 395’s integrated GPU. GPD and retailer specifications identify it as an RDNA 3.5 graphics processor with:
- 40 compute units
- 2,560 stream processors
- Graphics clocks of up to approximately 2.9 GHz
- Shared LPDDR5X unified memory rather than dedicated VRAM
This is unusually large for an integrated handheld GPU. The CPU and GPU use the same memory pool, and the operating system can allocate a substantial portion of that pool for graphics. More allocated memory does not automatically make the GPU faster, however; bandwidth, power, thermals, drivers, and the workload still determine performance.
Claims that the 8060S “matches an RTX 4060 laptop GPU” are not universal equivalences. Any such comparison needs a named game, resolution, settings, driver version, TDP, and laptop power limit.
Why this integrated GPU is unusually powerful
Four characteristics explain the Win 5’s performance potential:
- Large GPU: 40 compute units provide considerably more graphics resources than typical low-power handheld APUs.
- Wide memory interface: The Strix Halo platform uses a wide unified-memory design; DROIX describes a 256-bit memory bus.
- Higher power budget: The Win 5 can operate well above the power range used by mainstream handhelds.
- Shared high-speed memory: CPU and GPU access the same LPDDR5X pool, avoiding the small dedicated-memory arrangements found in many ordinary iGPUs.
In some workloads, that makes the 8060S behave more like a low-end discrete gaming GPU than a conventional handheld iGPU. It is an architectural inference supported by independent testing, not a promise that every game will scale the same way.

Performance: TDP matters as much as the GPU name
DROIX tested a pre-mass-production Win 5 at 28 W, 55 W, and 80 W. Its review reports large gains over earlier GPD generations in synthetic and gaming testing, but it also warns that final hardware and firmware could differ. Those results should therefore be read as early independent evidence, not a guarantee for every retail unit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe key lesson is that “Radeon 8060S performance” is incomplete without its operating conditions. A result at 28 W is not directly comparable with one at 55 W or 80 W.
| Test condition | What it represents | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| 28 W | Lower-power mobile operation | Better battery efficiency, with lower peak performance |
| 55 W | High-performance handheld use | A stronger balance of speed, heat, noise, and endurance |
| 80–85 W | Extreme performance mode | Most appropriate for mains power or short, demanding sessions |
Higher TDP does not always produce proportional gains. A game may become CPU-limited, thermally limited, or constrained by its engine. It also increases heat, fan noise, and battery drain.
GPD publishes game-specific performance figures on its product page, but those figures are manufacturer testing and should not be treated as universal benchmarks without complete methodology. The independent DROIX review identifies its test settings and the pre-production status of the tested device.
Display, controls, and everyday design
- Display: 7 inches, 1920×1080, up to 120 Hz, with variable-refresh support listed by the product materials.
- Controls: Integrated gamepad controls, capacitive analog sticks, triggers, rear trigger-mode switches, and an optical finger mouse.
- Keyboard: No physical keyboard, unlike several earlier GPD Win models.
- Orientation: Landscape display layout.
A 120 Hz panel does not mean demanding games will sustain 120 frames per second. The refresh-rate ceiling is most useful for lighter games, older titles, streamed games, and situations where the system can produce high frame rates.

Battery and power: the largest compromise
The Win 5 uses an external, removable 80 Wh battery rather than a conventional internal battery. The battery attaches to the rear of the handheld, while a cable arrangement can allow it to remain off the back of the device and reduce the weight in your hands.
GPD supplies a 180 W power adapter. USB-C power is also supported, but a charger or power bank must provide an appropriate output, and a lower-output USB-C source may force reduced performance or throttling.
DROIX recorded approximately 42 minutes in a high-load test at 80 W TDP, full brightness, and a Cinebench 2024 loop. That is a stress-test result, not normal gaming battery life. It demonstrates why maximum-power operation is better suited to the adapter or to short sessions.
In practical terms:
- 15–28 W: the more sensible range for mobile play and better endurance.
- 55 W: a high-performance handheld mode with substantially higher consumption.
- 80–85 W: an extreme mode best treated as plugged-in or short-duration operation.
- USB-C power bank: useful for lower-power play, but dependent on the bank, cable, USB-C PD profile, and the system’s power behavior.
The removable design makes battery replacement and swapping more practical than with a sealed internal pack, but it adds bulk, carrying complexity, and cost. It is not an all-day handheld battery solution.

Memory: 32 GB, 64 GB, or 128 GB?
Reported configurations include 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB of soldered LPDDR5X unified memory running at approximately 8000 MT/s. Because memory is shared by the CPU and GPU, it is both system RAM and the pool from which graphics memory is allocated.
- 32 GB: the sensible choice for ordinary 1080p gaming and the lowest purchase cost.
- 64 GB: the better general-purpose option for heavy multitasking, modded games, emulation, content creation, and longer-term headroom.
- 128 GB: aimed at local AI, virtual machines, and large creative workloads. It is difficult to justify for ordinary gaming alone.
128 GB does not turn the Win 5 into a system with 128 GB of dedicated VRAM, nor does it guarantee higher frame rates. Choose it for a workload that can use it.
Storage and expansion
The Win 5 supports a standard M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive, a second Mini SSD slot, and microSD expansion. GPD and DROIX cite capacities of up to 4 TB for the main M.2 slot.
DROIX reported approximately 1,700 MB/s from the Mini SSD in testing. Mini SSDs are physically smaller and less common than ordinary M.2 2280 drives, so they may cost more or be harder to source. Check the exact production revision, capacity support, and slot compatibility before buying a replacement drive.
Price and availability
Pricing varies substantially with processor, memory, storage, region, tax, shipping, warranty, and promotions. In a commercial check dated August 16, 2026, the DROIX store listing advertised the Win 5 from $2,079.95, while the opened product page showed $2,752.95 for a 64 GB/2 TB configuration. These are observed retailer prices, not a universal MSRP, and they should not be silently averaged.
At roughly $2,000 or more, the Win 5 should be compared with gaming laptops, compact PCs, larger Strix Halo handhelds, and handheld-plus-eGPU setups—not only with Steam Deck, ROG Ally, or Legion Go-class devices. Verify the exact SKU, included battery, charger, warranty, import costs, and regional return policy before ordering. See the retailer product page and GPD’s official specifications for current configuration details.

Verdict
The GPD Win 5 with Ryzen AI Max+ 395 and Radeon 8060S is a legitimate high-end handheld PC, and its 40-CU integrated GPU is far more ambitious than the graphics hardware in mainstream low-power handhelds. Its appeal is maximum performance, large unified-memory options, and the ability to function as a portable desktop.

Its compromises are equally central to the product: the Radeon 8060S needs a substantial power budget, the battery is external, high-power runtime is short, and the price can exceed that of a capable gaming laptop. The Win 5 makes sense for enthusiasts who specifically want the fastest compact Windows handheld experience. It is not the obvious choice for value buyers, casual players, or anyone prioritizing light weight, long battery life, and console-like simplicity.
