Gran Turismo 7 Update 1.49: Why Cars Launched Into the Air—and What Update 1.50 Fixed

After Gran Turismo 7’s July 25, 2024 Update 1.49, players reported cars bouncing violently or launching into the air in certain settings. Polyphony Digital later said Update 1.50, released August 7, addressed an issue that could make cars leap into the air when certain values were applied in specific settings. The fix addresses a documented bug; it does not establish that every handling complaint after the physics overhaul had the same cause.

What happened after Update 1.49?

Update 1.49 revised several parts of GT7’s driving simulation. The day after its release, Engadget reported that some cars were bouncing or being flung into the air in particular situations. The report also quoted the developers acknowledging unintended vehicle behavior when a particular car setting was applied in Car Settings.

Engadget described examples involving high-horsepower cars and extreme suspension setups, including behavior in slow-speed AI-controlled scenes. Those are reported observations, not a complete developer diagnosis or universal reproduction instructions. The developers’ statement, as quoted in the report, was: “We are now aware of the following issue in the 1.49 Update released on July 25: Car Physics Simulation — Unintended vehicle behavior is produced when a particular car setting is set within Car Settings.” Engadget’s July 26, 2024 report attributes the statement to the developers, without identifying an individual spokesperson.

What did Update 1.49 change?

The July 25 update was a broad simulation revision, not just a suspension adjustment. Polyphony Digital’s official Update 1.49 notes cover suspension and steering geometry, damper behavior, tire simulation, initial car settings, and driving assists. The stated aim of the suspension and steering changes was more natural cornering and more accurate steering forces.

The tire adjustments addressed several different behaviors: cornering at low speeds, stability over curbs, racing-tire heat and wear, and grip and hydroplaning in wet conditions. The breadth of those changes matters when interpreting the incident: the later correction documents a particular settings-related problem, not a finding that the entire physics revision was defective.

What did Update 1.50 fix?

In its August 7, 2024 notes, Polyphony Digital said: “We have addressed an issue in which cars leap into the air if certain values are applied in specific settings.” That is the direct official confirmation that the documented car-launching issue was addressed. The note does not list every affected car or identify the exact settings and values.

The sequence is clear: Update 1.49 introduced broad changes to the simulation; players then reported dramatic behavior in certain circumstances; and Update 1.50 addressed a settings-dependent issue involving cars leaping into the air. The available notes do not establish that every reported instance had one cause or that Update 1.50 resolved all player concerns about handling. See Polyphony Digital’s official Update 1.50 notes for the correction.

Was the whole physics overhaul broken?

The documented bug is not proof that the broader overhaul failed. Update 1.49 intentionally changed multiple systems, while the Update 1.50 correction describes an issue triggered by certain values in specific settings. That supports a narrower conclusion: a physics update was followed by a settings-dependent bug that the next cited update addressed.

Neither the official correction nor the incident report quantifies how many players or cars were affected. The sources also do not confirm that every perceived change in handling was part of the car-launching bug. It is more accurate to separate the dramatic, settings-related behavior from other reactions to the revised driving model.
