The clearest targets are the basement at Drakelowe, three dungeons with gems that appear after you meet Melisande, and display cases at the Arcane University and Chorrol Mages Guild. Check each gem’s inventory details before relying on it.
Where to find Grand Soul Gems
The locations and counts below are reported by Gamer Guides’ Vampire Cure walkthrough. Counts describe what the guide lists, not a guarantee that every item will be available in every playthrough or suitable for the quest.

Best route for the five empty gems
If the quest is your priority, begin with the quest-linked locations and verify each gem’s state as you go. The three dungeons—Crayfish Cave, Nornal, and Squandered Mine—are specifically tied to meeting Melisande. Drakelowe is another target; the independent Destructoid guide also points to its basement. These locations avoid depending entirely on vendor stock, but a listed gem is not automatically confirmed empty, so inspect it.
- Visit Drakelowe and search its basement, including the trapdoor area.
- Meet Melisande as part of Vampire Cure.
- Search Crayfish Steep in Crayfish Cave, Ageasel in Nornal, and Wind Holes in Squandered Mine.
- Check your inventory after each find. Keep track only of gems explicitly shown as empty.
- If you still need gems, check the guild and University cases below, or inspect mage NPC inventories.
The display cases can supplement the route, but two University cases have very hard locks. The guides describe the cases as display-case targets; they do not establish that taking their contents is consequence-free. Consider the lock and theft risk before attempting them.

Guild cases and mage NPCs
In addition to the Chorrol and Arcane University cases listed above, Gamer Guides lists one carried Grand Soul Gem for each of these mage NPCs: Angalmo in Chorrol, Felen Relas in Anvil, Ardaline in Bravil, Selena Orania in Bruma, Eilonwy in Cheydinhal, Alves Uvenim in Leyawiin, and Calindil at the Mystic Emporium in the Imperial City. Treat these as people to check, not guaranteed sources: inspect their current inventory and confirm the gem is empty before counting on it.
Guides differ in how they describe some Chorrol counts and merchant stock. For broader buying options, Destructoid’s guide names Aurelinwae and Calindil at the Mystic Emporium as possible sellers. Its estimates—under 100 gold for an empty gem and around 300 for a filled one—are guide estimates, not a dependable current price list. GameSpot describes Grand and Black Soul Gems as rare merchant stock. Check the inventory in your game rather than planning around a fixed price or guaranteed supply.

How to tell whether a gem will work for the quest
A Grand Soul Gem can be empty or hold a soul. The Vampire Cure objective is for five empty Grand Soul Gems, so the item name alone is not enough: open the inventory details and confirm the gem has no soul before turning it in. Some location entries are explicitly filled—for example, the Chorrol case includes two gems with greater souls, and the Chironasium entry contains a common soul.
If a found gem is already filled, it may still be useful for enchanting or recharging an enchanted weapon, but it does not satisfy an empty-gem requirement. Avoid using a needed empty gem until you have finished collecting what the quest asks for.

Finding, filling, and using Grand Soul Gems
Exploration, chests, and mage enemies can also yield gems, but the guides describe those sources as less reliable than specific locations. Destructoid notes Grand gems as rare drops from mages and necromancers. A random find may also be filled already, so it is not a dependable substitute for checking quest-linked locations when you need an empty gem.
To fill a gem, use Soul Trap on an eligible enemy and ensure it dies while the effect is active. The game places the captured soul in a suitable available gem. A filled Grand Soul Gem can then be used for enchanting or to replenish an enchanted weapon’s charge; the soul and gem tier affect the result.
