The idea for Lemmings began with a tiny animated character heading toward danger; the original Grand Theft Auto changed as players showed the team what they found compelling. In both cases, Jones recalls, success became clear through players’ responses—not a dependable formula the developers could spot in advance.
How did Jones know Lemmings was a hit?
In a 2018 GamesBeat interview, updated June 20, 2025, Jones recalled that Mike Dailly made an animation of a small character walking up a hillside toward a turret. Jones wondered whether a player could control the character’s route and stop it from walking into danger. That question became the seed of Lemmings.

The concept was unusual, and Jones says the team could not know in advance whether it would connect. Early reactions were encouraging, but the launch made the response tangible: Jones remembered Psygnosis giving him hourly sales updates and said the game sold more than 100,000 copies on its first day. The interview also says Lemmings was ported to more than 20 formats, a demanding task that Jones regarded as separate from the core creative work.
His larger point was simple: “But it’s always difficult to know if something is going to be a hit.” A strong creative starting point may be recognizable in hindsight without making the commercial outcome predictable.

How did players reshape the original Grand Theft Auto?
Jones described the first Grand Theft Auto as growing out of Race and Chase, a city game in which players could be police officers or criminals. The team observed that players were more interested in stealing cars and seeing what happened than in playing the good guys. As Jones put it, “Nobody liked playing the good guys.”
That response helped shift the game toward the criminal fantasy. The city’s reactions developed through iteration: players stole cars, and the world responded with alarms, emergency services, and other consequences. Jones summarized the design ambition as: “Everything was about — I want everything to react to what I’m doing and recognize it.”
In Jones’s recollection, the original game stayed in the top-ten charts for 12 months. He presented that sustained chart presence as evidence that it had become a success—not as proof that the team could have confidently forecast its reach before release.

Why did Jones move on to Crackdown?
After a few Grand Theft Auto iterations, Jones wanted to make something new. He said he gets bored repeating the same game and prefers to innovate from the ground up. His description of Crackdown centered on combining open-world exploration with platforming: a city to traverse, vertical movement, and progression as the player grew more capable.

Jones said, “I never have any regrets about trying different things because we have to take risks in our industry.” It is a statement of his own approach, not a promise that every experiment will work.
What does Jones say went wrong with APB?
Jones’s retrospective account of APB focuses on the costs and distribution conditions of its time. In the interview exchange, the interviewer described the game as having been in development for five years before release and referred to 100-player battles; Jones confirmed the scale of those battles. He recalled that supporting a large online game required buying physical servers and arranging data-center hosting.

Boxed-game distribution also shaped what the project could attempt. Jones felt that the expectations surrounding a boxed release left less room to experiment. In hindsight, he thought cloud infrastructure and early access might have suited APB better. Those comments are his explanation of how different technical and distribution conditions might have changed the fit; they are not an independent postmortem proving a single cause of the game’s problems.

Jones’s advice is to choose an area of game development that genuinely interests you and build deep expertise in it. He connects that recommendation to the growth and specialization of contemporary game teams: a broad interest can start a career, but focused skill gives a developer a meaningful place in a complex production.

Jones also discussed cloud technology, game streaming, esports viewing, AI, and more dynamic worlds as areas he found promising. Those were his views in the interview, not evidence that any one technology has since delivered the future he anticipated.
What the stories do—and do not—show
The Lemmings and Grand Theft Auto stories show two different routes from an initial idea to a hit: a small animation that raised a design question, and a city simulation whose direction evolved through watching player behavior. The APB recollection adds another factor: a game’s ambitions can collide with the infrastructure and distribution available at the time.
These are examples from one developer’s career, recalled in an edited interview—not a universal recipe or a systematic study of hit games. Jones’s point is that creators can make deliberate design choices, observe how people respond, and take risks, but they cannot reliably know in advance which idea will break through.
