Gray Zone Warfare Preview: Could This Become Your New Favourite Shooter?

A 2024 closed-alpha preview found Gray Zone Warfare’s blend of open-world missions, tactical combat and extraction full of promise. Here’s how to read that impression alongside the game’s current Steam Early Access status and PC requirements.

Gray Zone Warfare made a strong first impression in a closed alpha preview published on April 20, 2024: its mix of open-world exploration, tactical firefights, survival management and extraction gave it the feel of several shooter subgenres at once. That enthusiasm belongs to one reviewer’s week with an early build, not a verdict on the game as it stands today. Steam lists the PC game as an evolving Early Access release, launched April 30, 2024.

What makes Gray Zone Warfare stand out?

Grant Taylor-Hill’s April 2024 preview for Insider Gaming described a game that does not sit neatly in one shooter category. As he put it: “It’s not quite an extraction shooter and not quite a tactical FPS title. It’s not quite an open-world action title, and it’s not quite a cooperative survival game.” That is his editorial characterization of the alpha, rather than an official genre label.

The appeal he found was in how those ingredients worked together. Players started at a private military company (PMC) base, chose equipment and a mission, took a helicopter to a landing zone, and moved through the world to complete tasks. Enemies and the possibility of encountering other players added risk; health and supplies demanded attention; returning to base brought access to vendors and stored gear. Taylor-Hill said the alpha allowed solo or team play and did not impose a mission timer after deployment.

That structure gives the game a useful point of comparison with Escape from Tarkov and other extraction shooters, a lineage Taylor-Hill himself acknowledged. But his preview emphasized a more open-ended deployment, without a countdown forcing players to finish within a set mission window. The balance of exploration, objectives and extraction—not a timer-driven raid alone—was central to the experience he reported.

What did the alpha feel like to play?

A world shaped by other players

The preview’s most evocative detail was the sense that activity carried across the island. Taylor-Hill reported seeing evidence of other players’ actions, including bodies left behind, while enemy forces could respawn. That combination suggested a world that felt shared without every encounter being a direct player-versus-player fight. It also meant that the environment’s state could tell a story about what had happened before a player arrived.

Promising combat, incomplete systems

Taylor-Hill found the AI capable enough to make combat engaging and the scenery impressive. At the same time, he noted that looting opportunities were limited and that the alpha had the typical problems of an unfinished early-access-style product. Its content was not complete. The preview therefore supports a claim of promise—an atmospheric setting and a compelling gameplay mix—not a claim that the systems were polished, balanced or representative of the current build.

How much of that preview applies to the game now?

The date matters. The Insider Gaming piece was published April 20, 2024 and reflects a one-week closed-alpha experience. The game entered PC Early Access on Steam ten days later, on April 30, 2024. Steam’s current store listing describes it as a “PvE-first open-world tactical shooter” set on a quarantined Southeast Asian island, with solo and squad deployment. Steam also cautions that the game is incomplete and may change. The alpha account is useful for understanding the concept and the reviewer’s first impressions; it should not be read as a feature-by-feature guide to the live build.

MADFINGER Games’ Steam Early Access description says, “In Early Access, your active involvement shapes the development of Gray Zone Warfare.” It lists a broad set of features planned for the full version:

Will Gray Zone Warfare suit you?

The preview points toward a particular kind of appeal: a player who enjoys moving through a large environment, working through objectives at their own pace, and weighing combat and survival risks may find the concept more compelling than a tightly timed raid format. Squad play is part of the listed proposition, but the alpha preview also reported solo play. Players comparing it with other shooters should look at how much PvE and PvP exposure they want, how much freedom they prefer alongside mission structure, and whether survival management and an evolving Early Access game are attractive trade-offs.

There is not enough in the cited preview and store listing for a current independent head-to-head verdict against another game. The preview is one reviewer’s dated alpha impression, while Steam’s description and requirements are publisher-provided information. Treat the former as a snapshot of potential and the latter as the store’s current compatibility baseline.

What PC does Steam list as the baseline?

Steam’s system requirements are the compatibility specifications shown by the publisher, not the result of independent performance testing. The listing gives these minimum and recommended PC requirements:
