Winds of War is Gray Zone Warfare Update 0.3, a broad feature release whose changes reach beyond weather. MADFINGER Games describes new tactical systems for PvP and PvE, a revised field loop built around Combat Outposts, timed squad missions, task and health-system changes, and new weapons and locations. The details below reflect the developer’s announcement and release notes, not independent gameplay testing.

What does Update 0.3 add?

MADFINGER Games presented Winds of War as Gray Zone Warfare’s second major update. Its most visible additions are dynamic weather, Combat Outposts, Conflict Zones and Strike Missions, alongside changes to progression, repairs, health feedback, AI and quality of life. The developer’s release notes describe the mechanics; its launch announcement summarizes the release.

How does the new weather affect play?

Weather varies through rain, storms, fog and wind during daytime and nighttime. Forecasts appear on the map and main menu, and the developer says they are based on real weather data. According to the release notes, hot, humid conditions increase hydration and energy loss; rain and wind affect NPC hearing, while rain and fog affect their sight. Rain can flood rice fields.

MADFINGER’s World & Weather devlog describes 11 weather presets and more than 80 schedules, with cloud cover, temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction varying. The developer says each schedule lasts three in-game days. It also describes wet clothing, scope fogging, rain on the player’s field of view, movement and stamina effects in flooded fields, lightning that can silhouette players, and weather-reactive ambient and wildlife audio. These are developer-described mechanics; the official materials cited here do not provide independent measurements of their in-game impact.

  • Online/offline 2-player co-op Special Ops Survival mode that earns you experience through 16 frantic objective-based missions

What do Combat Outposts change for PvP and PvE?

Combat Outposts (COPs) are locations guarded by neutral NPCs until players capture them. MADFINGER’s World & Weather devlog says the update adds 36 outposts, split into minor and major types. The release notes say minor COPs provide respawn access, lockers and vendors; major COPs are more heavily defended and can host Vulture at two randomly selected locations.

Mode Outpost ownership What to expect
PvP One faction holds an outpost; another can recapture it. NPC guards defend the holding faction’s outpost.
PvE Any faction can clear and claim an outpost, and multiple factions may share it. Ownership is not exclusive to one faction.

The distinction matters: in PvP, a COP is a contested faction objective; in PvE, it can serve as a shared foothold. In either mode, its respawn and service access can change how players move around the island.

How do Conflict Zones and Strike Missions work?

Conflict Zones mark recent faction fighting

A Conflict Zone appears on the map when PMCs from different factions fight and remains visible for a period after the firefight ends. The release notes also award experience for enemy PMC kills made inside a Conflict Zone. The marker therefore signals recent combat, not a guarantee that opponents are still present.

Strike Missions are timed squad activities

Strike Missions appear randomly, have a time limit, and require a squad to accept and complete them. They are explicitly squad-based rather than a solo activity. Separately, kill-task progress is shared among squad members, so a group can advance those tasks together.

What changes to tasks, repairs and survival systems?

Tasks are easier to manage away from base

Players can manage selected tasks and claim task rewards without returning to a Forward Operating Base (FOB). The update also adds and reworks tasks, adjusts economy and restocking, revises looting and container inputs, and speeds up Starter Town progression.

Repairing trades time for cost

Death no longer reduces item durability; use wears items down, and bullets hitting a weapon accelerate its durability loss. Players can choose a slower, lower-cost repair that leaves the item unavailable while it is repaired, or pay more for an instant repair kit. That makes the choice practical: save money if you can wait, or spend more to get the item back immediately.

Health feedback and AI reactions are revised

The health changes include revised symptoms and more detail about injury source, ammunition, armor penetration, shot direction, bleeding and fatal hits. A lower-abdomen gut organ can cause a coma if destroyed. AI can react to injuries by limping or being stunned; flashbangs affect them, and some NPCs warn players before opening fire.

What other player-facing systems are new?

  • Friend or Foe: visible faction armbands and operator warnings are intended to reduce friendly fire.
  • Tracking tags: purchasable tags can reveal the location of tagged gear. If another player loots a tagged item, the tracker follows that player while they carry it until it expires. The notes say a tag cannot be removed from an item.
  • Dragging squadmates: players can drag downed teammates before treating them.
  • Quality of life: the notes list smooth optical-scope zoom, locker sorting and new container types, improved key-binding behavior, matchmaking changes, and fauna and biome audio adjustments.

The release notes also describe changes to the lowest graphics settings intended to help PCs that meet minimum requirements. That is a stated design aim, not a published benchmark or guarantee of a particular performance improvement.

Which weapons, locations and languages are included?

The detailed release notes name five weapons: SVD, MP7, Sig MCX, Beretta M9A1 and Colt Combat Commander. There is a discrepancy in the official materials: the launch announcement says four new weapons, while the notes list five names. The launch announcement also says the update adds 80+ weapon parts and two ammunition types. MADFINGER’s devlog describes over 60 new locations, including a hilltop restaurant, construction site, radio station and poppy fields.

The launch announcement lists eleven added localizations: German, French, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Czech, Turkish, Simplified Chinese, Korean and Japanese. It also records a full progress wipe as part of the update’s launch. That is a launch-era event, not guidance about the current state of any account. The announcement does not provide enough detail to compare current editions.

What should players take away from Winds of War?

Winds of War is more than a weather update: the developer’s notes describe environmental effects alongside new capture points, faction-combat signals, squad missions and changes to progression and survival systems. Its strongest mode-specific difference is how COP ownership works in PvP versus PvE, while Strike Missions provide a distinct timed activity for squads. These details describe Update 0.3 as announced; the sources cited here do not establish whether later patches changed the systems or the current version of the game.
