The best ocean game depends on what you want from the water: Subnautica makes it a dangerous survival world, ABZÛ turns it into a focused swimming and discovery adventure, and DAVE THE DIVER pairs diving with restaurant management. These are useful starting points rather than an objective ranking; each offers a different kind of ocean experience.

The shortlist is organized by experience, not by a shared score. For current platform support and storefront details, check the store for your platform before buying; the available descriptions do not establish a complete compatibility list.

Subnautica: survival in an alien ocean
Subnautica is the clearest pick if you want the ocean to feel both explorable and hazardous. PlayStation describes an open-world survival adventure on a submerged alien planet, with environments ranging from shallow reefs and deep-sea trenches to lava fields and bioluminescent rivers.
Survival is part of the exploration loop: you manage oxygen, food, and water, collect resources, craft equipment, build bases, and contend with dangerous creatures. Better gear lets you reach farther into the ocean, so preparation and discovery are closely linked. The game offers Survival, Freedom, Hardcore, and Creative modes, giving players different ways to approach its systems.

- Escape to the islands for soothing tropical scenery! An orginial music score accentuates the graceful motion of a dolphin's body and the mysterious sea turtle's rythmic stroke. Let stress drift away with an island sunset or a calming waterscape, or get lost in the antics of a vibrant school of fish playing in candy-colored coral. Shot with state-of-the-art HD equipment. Format: BLU-RAY DISC G
PlayStation lists the PS4 release date as December 4, 2018, and the PS5 version’s release date as May 13, 2021. Those dates apply to the PlayStation releases, not necessarily to every platform edition.
ABZÛ: swimming and marine-life encounters
ABZÛ is a more focused underwater adventure, centered on swimming through ocean environments and encountering marine life. PlayStation describes hundreds of species based on real creatures, along with schools of fish, aquatic ecosystems, and ancient secrets. Steam lists it as a single-player game developed by Giant Squid and published by 505 Games, with an August 2, 2016 release date.

Choose ABZÛ when graceful movement, scenery, and discovery matter more to you than survival management. Its official descriptions support that focus, but whether the experience feels relaxing is a matter of taste.
DAVE THE DIVER: diving by day, restaurant management by night
DAVE THE DIVER combines underwater exploration with an off-water business loop. PlayStation describes exploring the Blue Hole and catching fish during the day, then serving customers at a sushi restaurant at night. The change in activity makes it a good choice if you want an ocean game with more than swimming and exploration.
Xbox categorizes the game as an adventure, RPG, and management hybrid, and its current store description lists more than 200 kinds of sea creatures. Xbox lists November 20, 2025 as the release date for its own catalog entry; treat that as platform-specific storefront information rather than a universal launch date.
More ocean games to consider
Endless Ocean Luminous
Endless Ocean Luminous is a Nintendo Switch option for players more interested in observing marine life than pursuing a heavily quest-driven adventure. Pocket Tactics characterizes it as a calm experience featuring animals including whales, squid, and fish, with little emphasis on puzzles or quests. That description is an editorial characterization, not a guarantee that every player will find it calm.
Beyond Blue
Beyond Blue offers a science-oriented framing: Ocean Rising describes it as a future-set scenario in which the player is a deep-sea explorer and scientist, incorporating real-life ocean footage. Ocean Rising reports that it launched in 2020; check the relevant platform store for current availability.
Koral and Jupiter & Mars
Ocean Rising also names Koral and Jupiter & Mars as ocean-themed games. Its description gives more detail about Koral’s reef-revival and species interaction than it does about Jupiter & Mars, so those are useful names to investigate rather than recommendations to compare on equal terms here. Check current platform stores for availability and game details.

- Want danger, resource management, and a world to explore? Start with Subnautica.
- Want the ocean itself to be the focus, with swimming and encounters with marine life? Consider ABZÛ.
- Want to alternate between diving and running a business? Try DAVE THE DIVER.
- Want a science-oriented setting or a focus on observing wildlife? Look at Beyond Blue or Endless Ocean Luminous, respectively.
These distinctions matter because “ocean game” can mean a survival world, a scenic underwater adventure, a management hybrid, or an experience centered on observation. The descriptions above establish different emphases, not equivalent treatment of marine life or a definitive ranking across the genre. Platform support and catalog listings can change, so verify them on the store where you plan to play.
