Grim Dawn is well worth considering if you want a loot-driven action RPG with deep character building and a long campaign. The base game’s accumulated reviews are strongly positive, but that verdict does not automatically extend to its 2026 expansion, Fangs of Asterkarn, whose early Steam reception was mixed. Your fit also depends on whether you enjoy deliberate combat and the familiar conventions of the genre.
What do Grim Dawn reviews say?
The base game has a favorable review record across both critics and players. Metacritic lists an 83 Metascore from 29 critic reviews for the 2016 release-era game, alongside an 8.3 user score from 934 ratings. In a Steam snapshot captured on October 8, 2026, 94% of 41,168 English-language reviews were positive; 87% of 708 recent reviews were positive. These figures describe the base game, and the Steam totals can change over time. Metacritic’s Grim Dawn record and Steam’s game listing provide the platform-specific review records.
What critics and players value
The main draw is the combination of character development and loot. Steam describes a system in which you develop two classes, build around skills, find and craft items, and take on quests. The game supports single-player as well as online and LAN co-op. Critics’ praise centers on combat, progression, and looting, while recognizing that the game uses a familiar action-RPG formula.
Why some players are less enthusiastic
Individual Metacritic user reviews raise concerns about slow or clunky combat, repetitive encounters, uneven difficulty, map discovery, and a frustrating bounty encounter. Those comments are personal experiences, not proof that every player will encounter the same problems. They do point to useful questions to ask before buying: do you enjoy a measured pace, repeated combat loops, and exploring maps as part of progression?

Is Grim Dawn a good fit for you?
| You may enjoy it if… | Consider carefully if… |
|---|---|
| You like experimenting with dual-class builds and skills. | You want fast, immediately responsive combat above all else. |
| Finding, crafting, and improving gear is a major part of the appeal. | Repeated encounters or familiar genre structures quickly feel stale to you. |
| You want a single-player campaign, with online or LAN co-op as an option. | You prefer a game that minimizes exploration friction or has consistently even difficulty. |
This is a fit guide, not a head-to-head scorecard: the review records support Grim Dawn’s build-and-loot strengths, but do not establish comparative rankings against other action RPGs.
What does the Definitive Edition include?
“Definitive Edition” is not the same thing as every expansion currently available. The older Steam bundle listing includes the base game, Crucible Mode, Ashes of Malmouth, and Forgotten Gods; it does not list Fangs of Asterkarn. Crate’s Xbox Definitive Edition description covers the same older content. Check the contents shown on your chosen storefront rather than relying on the edition name alone. Steam’s Definitive Edition bundle listing and Crate Entertainment’s official site describe the package.

How is Fangs of Asterkarn reviewed, and what do you need?
Fangs of Asterkarn launched on July 23, 2026. It is a separate expansion, not part of the older Definitive Edition contents described above. On Steam, it requires the base game plus both Ashes of Malmouth and Forgotten Gods. Confirm the live listing and your platform’s requirements before purchasing.
The expansion’s early Steam reception was mixed in the October 8, 2026 snapshot: 69% positive from 1,359 all-time reviews and 52% positive from 96 recent reviews. That is a relatively small, moving pool compared with the base game’s accumulated reviews; it should not be treated as a settled long-term verdict or confused with the base game’s 2016 critic score. See Steam’s Fangs of Asterkarn listing for its current requirements and review status.

Availability depends on platform
At the time of the October 8, 2026 snapshot, Crate Entertainment said Fangs of Asterkarn was available on Steam and GOG, with an Xbox release coming soon. Availability can change, and storefront packages may differ by platform or region, so check the live store page for your system. Crate calls it “Our final expansion” and describes it as “a love letter to the community”; the developer also says, “This may not be Grim Dawn 2, but to us it is very much Grim Dawn 1.5.” These are the developer’s descriptions, not independent review conclusions. Crate Entertainment’s official site is the source for its platform and expansion statements.
What should you buy?
- Want to try the core game? Compare the base-game listing with the bundle available in your region, paying attention to included content rather than assuming a bundle includes every expansion.
- Want the older expansion package? Check whether the listing includes Ashes of Malmouth and Forgotten Gods, as well as Crucible Mode.
- Want Fangs of Asterkarn? On Steam, first make sure you own the base game and both required expansions. On other platforms, verify the current platform-specific listing.
- Compare prices at checkout. The available review and product snapshots do not establish a universal current price; storefront prices and regional packages can vary.
Verdict
Grim Dawn earns a strong recommendation for players who want a substantial, build-focused action RPG centered on loot and progression. Its positive base-game record is compelling, but the game’s pace and familiar combat loop will not suit everyone. Treat Fangs of Asterkarn as a separate purchase decision: it has strict Steam prerequisites and a mixed early review snapshot, rather than the base game’s long-established consensus.
