Grim Fandango Remastered remains a standout for its afterlife story and noir atmosphere, but its faithful approach preserves classic adventure design.

Grim Fandango Remastered is still worth playing if you enjoy story-led adventures with an unforgettable setting, sharp writing and film-noir atmosphere. The remaster improves presentation and controls, but it preserves the original adventure rather than rebuilding it for modern tastes. That distinction is the key to deciding whether it is for you.

What is Grim Fandango about?

You play Manny Calavera, a travel agent in the afterlife who helps newly dead souls travel toward their final destination. When a conspiracy threatens Manny’s own chance at salvation, his work becomes a much larger journey. The premise gives the game room to combine mystery, comedy and noir with imagery drawn from art deco and the Day of the Dead.

Double Fine describes the remaster as keeping the original art and story while improving how the game looks, sounds and controls. That artistic identity—not a newly reimagined plot or modernized adventure structure—is its main appeal. The Guardian’s 2015 review praised a gameworld that “gracefully blends the tropes of film noir, art deco and the Day of the Dead festival.” Read The Guardian’s review.

Is Grim Fandango Remastered worth playing?

Yes, especially if atmosphere, characters and a distinctive story matter more to you than contemporary adventure-game conventions. Manny’s afterlife journey remains an unusual setting for a comic mystery, and the game’s personality is what makes it memorable. Reviews on different platforms have generally been favorable: Metacritic’s PS4 page lists an 80 Metascore from 45 critic reviews—35 positive, 10 mixed and none negative. That is a PS4-specific aggregate, not a score for every edition or a guarantee that every player will enjoy it. See Metacritic’s PS4 review page.

#1 Best Overall
Microids House of the Dead Remake Video Game Disc for PlayStation 4
  • Classic light gun rebuilt with modern graphics
  • Fast-paced zombie shooting action with multiple endings
  • Cooperative game mode for shared action
  • Updated controls optimized for PS4
  • Replayable game with scoring and updates

The main reservation is the same one that shapes the recommendation: this is a remaster, not a comprehensive remake. It retains the original adventure’s design sensibilities. If you expect a contemporary overhaul, or want a game whose appeal rests primarily on modernized mechanics, its age may be more noticeable than its improved presentation. If you are happy to meet a classic adventure on its own terms, its story and atmosphere still make a persuasive case.

What does the remaster improve?

Double Fine says the remaster preserves the original’s art and story while improving visuals, sound and controls. The studio’s Steam description summarizes the intent as keeping “all the beautiful art and engaging story fans remember,” while making the game “look, sound, and control even better.” That describes a presentation and control update, not a claim that the underlying adventure has been redesigned. See the Steam listing.

Double Fine’s mobile-release announcement gives more specific examples for that release: improved visuals, a re-recorded orchestral soundtrack, making-of commentary and touch controls. Those details should not be assumed to apply identically to every platform. The available sources do not establish a complete platform-by-platform feature or performance comparison. Read Double Fine’s mobile release announcement.

Which platform should you play it on?

Choose based on the device and controls you prefer rather than an unverified technical ranking. Double Fine lists Windows, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, macOS, iOS, Linux and Android as supported platforms. The sources do not establish a definitive performance winner, current prices or regional storefront availability.

  • Choose Switch if portability matters. Nintendo Life’s review found the game still enchanting and praised adjustments to the Switch port, but that is a review of that edition rather than a controlled comparison with other platforms. Read Nintendo Life’s Switch review.
  • Choose a computer or another supported device if you would rather play on hardware you already use. The preferred control method is a sensible deciding factor, but the available sources do not document identical input options on every edition.
  • Consider the physical Switch edition if you specifically want a boxed copy. Double Fine announced a physical Nintendo Switch release in coordination with iam8bit. The announcement establishes that a physical edition exists; it does not establish current stock or availability. Read the physical-edition announcement.

Release dates differ by listing: Steam gives the PC release date as January 26, 2015, while Metacritic identifies January 27, 2015 as the initial release date. These are the dates those respective services report, not interchangeable platform-wide dates.

Who is most likely to enjoy it?

  • Play it if you want an unusual afterlife story, enjoy noir-inflected comedy and value art direction and atmosphere.
  • Approach it with adjusted expectations if you are curious about a celebrated classic but prefer current adventure-game design. The remaster improves presentation and controls; it does not turn the game into a modern remake.
  • Look elsewhere if a contemporary redesign is a requirement, or if the original adventure’s style is not appealing to you. Positive reception does not erase the difference between a faithful remaster and a remake.

Steam’s listing showed 88% positive among 3,819 English reviews, and 91% positive among 37 recent English reviews when accessed in 2026. Those are changing review snapshots, not stable ratings or a substitute for deciding whether the game’s style suits you.
