Grim Quest is a grid- and turn-based dungeon crawler RPG built around deliberate exploration, challenging fights, and a bleak fantasy story. In Android Central’s July 20, 2020 Game of the Week feature, Jordan Palmer called it “a grid- and turn-based dungeon crawler RPG that can be quite challenging.” That makes it a natural fit for players who enjoy old-school RPG structure and a foreboding atmosphere.
What kind of RPG is Grim Quest?
Palmer described Grim Quest as “an old school RPG,” emphasizing its traditional dungeon-crawling feel. Its grid-based movement and turn-based combat ask players to make deliberate choices rather than rely on real-time action. The 2020 feature characterizes the game as challenging, though it does not provide a difficulty setting breakdown or a comparison with other dungeon crawlers. Read the Android Central feature.
What is the story and tone?
You play a freelancer arriving in Ashborne during a crisis: a tear in reality has released the Dark. The threats described in the feature include creatures of the Dark as well as bandits, giving the setting both supernatural and human dangers.
The presentation is foreboding rather than lighthearted. Palmer connects the Dark to Lovecraftian horror and to human psychology, framing the game’s menace as more than a roster of monsters. That characterization reflects the 2020 article’s account, not a new independent assessment of the game.
