In Grounded 2, start by following the opening missions rather than treating Brookhollow Park as a checklist to clear. The early tasks introduce the survival systems you will rely on: gathering materials, crafting tools, using the workbench, and building. Once you have a feel for those basics, explore more freely and use the Resource Analyser to learn what your finds can unlock.
What should you do first in Grounded 2?
Follow the opening mission path and take time to complete its introductory objectives. Xbox Wire’s beginner guide describes those missions as a way to learn the game’s key systems. This gives you a useful foundation before you head off on a long expedition or commit resources to a larger build.
That is a recommendation, not a rule: you can explore at your own pace. PC Gamer likewise recommends staying with early missions before branching out. If you prefer to experiment, do so—but expect to learn some systems through trial and error rather than through the guided introduction.
Learn the basic survival loop
Think of the early game as a repeating sequence: find useful materials, make tools, use the workbench to craft, and build a place to regroup. Xbox Wire’s overview presents gathering, crafting, building, and survival as central parts of getting started. The specific recipes and balance can change during development, so follow the current in-game prompts rather than relying on a fixed recipe list.

- Gather: Pick up unfamiliar materials as you encounter them. They may be useful for crafting or building.
- Craft tools: Use the available recipes to make tools that support your next tasks.
- Use the workbench: Check its recipes as you collect new materials and expand your options.
- Build a modest first base: Prioritize a practical place to return to and build on later, rather than spending your early supplies on an elaborate design.
Analyze unfamiliar items
When you find a new item, check whether the Resource Analyser can identify what it unlocks. PC Gamer’s beginner tips recommend analyzing items; it is a useful habit because it helps connect exploration with new crafting possibilities. Treat the analyser as a learning aid, not a guarantee that every item immediately provides a recipe or upgrade.
Explore after you have your bearings
Once you understand the opening systems, branch out from the mission path and explore at a pace that suits you. Bring the tools and supplies your current goals call for, and pause to inspect discoveries that might expand your crafting options. There is no need to follow a single “best” route: the available beginner guidance supports learning the fundamentals first, but does not establish one universally best base location, build, or exploration path.

Keep version changes in mind
Grounded 2 launched in Xbox Game Preview and Steam Early Access on July 29, 2025, according to Xbox Wire’s launch-day beginner guide. Obsidian has continued to publish updates and announced PlayStation 5 availability; platform access and game details can change. Check Obsidian’s official news for current announcements, and use the in-game instructions for mechanics that may have changed since a guide was written.
As Game Director Chris Parker put it in the Xbox Wire launch coverage, “Grounded 2 gave us a fresh start, a chance to rebuild the game from the ground up, push the world further, and finally introduce features like mounts, new biome structures, and a more narrative-driven experience.” That ongoing development is one reason to favor current in-game guidance over rigid, version-specific instructions.
