Grounded 2 is an Early Access survival adventure from Obsidian Entertainment and Eidos-Montréal, published by Xbox Game Studios. You explore Brookhollow Park at ant size, gather resources, craft equipment, build bases, fight insects and ride Buggies. You can play solo or with friends. The game launched in Xbox Game Preview and Steam Early Access on July 29, 2025; the official site continues to identify it as an Early Access game.
What is Grounded 2?
Grounded 2 is a sequel to Grounded, but its story starts fresh. The developers describe it as a survival adventure about exploring a human-sized park from a tiny perspective. The core activities are gathering and analyzing materials, crafting, building shelter, managing food and water, and fighting the insects that threaten you. Its official overview also highlights character archetypes with distinct abilities and Buggies: insects you can hatch, raise and ride, as well as command in combat and use to gather resources. Game Director Chris Parker told Xbox Wire, “The story begins fresh, and we’ve designed the world, tools, and pacing to be more approachable from the start.” That is the developers’ description of the design, not a guarantee that every encounter will be easy.
Do you need to play Grounded first?
No. The developers say Grounded 2’s story begins fresh, so the premise does not require knowledge of the first game. The sequel carries forward the small-scale survival-adventure concept, but its new setting, tools and pacing are intended to welcome new players. Xbox Wire’s launch guide

Is Grounded 2 still in Early Access?
Yes. The official site and Steam listing describe the game as Early Access, and Xbox announced its launch in Game Preview on July 29, 2025. Steam’s developer answers do not give a fixed date for version 1.0. The developers say the full release is intended to include the complete story and additional content; the current version may change and is not presented as complete. Steam store page
That matters if you want a finished campaign: treat the present build as an evolving game rather than assuming the full story is already available. The sources do not establish when Early Access will end.

Can you play Grounded 2 solo or co-op?
Yes. The official Xbox description frames it as a co-op survival adventure, and Xbox Wire and Steam also describe solo play. You can explore and survive alone or play with friends. Buggies add another layer to the loop: they can be ridden for traversal, directed in fights and used to collect resources. The cited descriptions do not specify a player-count limit, so check the current store listing or in-game details if party size is decisive for you.

What should you do first in Grounded 2?
Start by learning what the park’s materials do and keeping your basic survival needs in view. Xbox Wire’s launch guide recommends using the Resource Analyzer on new resources; analyzing materials reveals uses and unlocks crafting recipes. It also advises managing hunger and thirst rather than treating exploration as the only priority. Xbox Wire starter guide
- Analyze unfamiliar resources. Use a Resource Analyzer when you find new materials so you can learn their uses and unlock recipes.
- Keep food and water on your mind. Hunger and thirst are ongoing survival concerns. The launch guide recommends crafting a Canteen at a workbench after scanning Grub Hide and unlocking the shovel upgrade.
- Consider pursuing the Buggy questline. Buggies can help with travel, combat and resource gathering, making the questline useful for expanding your options. The guide cautions that obtaining a Red Ant Soldier Egg means fighting stronger foes, so prepare before taking that on.
- Build up your equipment and base as you explore. Crafting, shelter and combat preparation are part of the core survival loop; do not assume that every new area or insect can be handled with starter gear.
What accessibility options are available?
Xbox Wire’s launch coverage listed Arachnophobia Safe Mode, colorblind options, subtitle customization, Read to Me narration, adjustable reticles and control settings.
