Grounded 2 keeps the crafting, resource gathering and base-building loop that defined the first game, while making rideable bugs its clearest new twist. That is the central tension in Polygon’s July 29, 2025 review: the sequel’s backyard is playful to explore, but the familiar routine can feel tedious to returning players. The review captures the game at its Early Access launch, not the version shaped by later updates.
What is the main difference between Grounded and Grounded 2?
In the review’s account, the core survival structure is recognizably familiar: gather resources, craft equipment and build a base while navigating a world scaled to tiny players. The sequel’s main novelty is traversal by buggy—rideable bugs that add a different way to move through the backyard. The reviewer welcomed that change, but argued it did not erase the sense of doing much of the same work again. These are critical impressions, not objective measurements of how every player will experience the game. Polygon review, reprinted by AlongWalker.
The review also weighs the game’s cooperative appeal through the author’s personal memory of playing the first Grounded with friends during the COVID-19 pandemic. That anecdote explains the reviewer’s expectations; it should not be read as evidence about how commonly players play together.
Does riding bugs make the sequel feel new?
Buggy riding gives the familiar survival loop a distinct traversal hook, and Obsidian continued to expand and adjust the system after launch. The dated updates show how that feature grew beyond the snapshot covered by the review:

What did the July 2025 review cover?
Obsidian announced Grounded 2 for Game Preview and Early Access on July 29, 2025. Polygon’s review appeared on that launch date, so its judgments about the familiar loop, base building and buggy traversal refer to the early-access launch build. It cannot tell readers how later updates feel to play. Obsidian’s launch announcement.

The reviewer praised the scale and playfulness of the world and the possibilities of building a base, while finding the early resource-gathering routine familiar and at times tedious. For returning players, the useful question is whether buggy traversal and the expanded setting make that routine enjoyable again—not whether the sequel has replaced the original’s basic survival formula.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Grounded 2 worth playing if you finished the first game?
The July 2025 review’s answer is mixed: the sequel retains the first game’s survival and crafting rhythm, which may feel repetitive, but its backyard, base-building possibilities and rideable bugs offer reasons to return. The later updates add more buggy functionality, racing in Playgrounds and new content, but they are separate from what the review evaluated. Whether the game’s familiar routine is a drawback or a comfortable foundation depends on what you want from a sequel.
