What is Great Hollow?
Great Hollow Nature Preserve & Ecological Research Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 2016. The organization focuses on biodiversity conservation, applied ecological research, environmental education and passive outdoor recreation. It describes the preserve as approximately 825 acres spanning New Fairfield and Sherman, Connecticut, and adjoining or nearly adjoining protected land in Connecticut and New York. It is more than a hiking destination: facilities include a wet lab, lecture and conference rooms, housing, historic barns, and indoor and outdoor event space. Staff and collaborators study wildlife and plants, while school programs use the preserve as an outdoor classroom for subjects such as water quality, aquatic and forest ecology, and animal adaptations. Activities can include identifying invertebrates, sampling water, measuring trees and tracking radio-tagged animals. Are Great Hollow’s trails open to the public?
Yes. Great Hollow says its grounds and trails are open every day from sunrise to sunset throughout the year, free of charge. The preserve does not have public restrooms or trash receptacles, so plan restroom stops in advance and carry all waste out. The organization’s pages differ on the total trail network: its home page says five miles, while its visitor and directions pages say more than four miles. Use the current visitor information and trail map rather than relying on a single total.

Great Hollow’s visitor guide describes routes with different distances, terrain and difficulty. These are route descriptions, not rankings; choose according to your walking ability and interests, and check the current map because access and conditions can change.

Other visitor-guide features include Tucker’s Run waterfall and pool, an observation tower, picnic locations and a pollinator garden with nearly 20 labeled native plant species. The grounds are also home to barred owls, eastern screech owls and red-tailed hawks with permanent injuries that prevent them from surviving in the wild. Follow the map and any on-site directions to confirm routes and access.

Where is Great Hollow, and how do you get there?
The preserve’s address is 225 Route 37, New Fairfield, CT 06812, near State Route 37 and Haviland Hollow Road. Great Hollow provides driving directions for visitors approaching from New York and from the Hartford and Boston area. It also describes taking Metro-North’s Harlem Line to Southeast Station and continuing by local taxi or rideshare. Review the official directions before traveling; public-transit connections beyond the station are local services, not a preserve shuttle.
What rules and safety details should visitors know?
- Pets: Great Hollow’s visitor page says dogs must be leashed and picked up after, but its 2025 waiver packet says animals or pets of any kind are prohibited. Because the official guidance conflicts, contact Great Hollow directly before bringing any animal.
- Camping and fires: Camping and campfires are prohibited. The 2025 waiver packet also prohibits camping equipment and fires.
- Leave no trace: Do not collect or disturb plants or animals, and do not leave items behind. Prepared food and drinks may be consumed, but visitors must remove the resulting trash.
- Bears: Great Hollow warns that black bears are fairly common in the area. Stay bear-aware and follow current visitor guidance.
- Bicycles: The 2025 waiver packet prohibits bikes.
- Photography and commercial use: The packet permits personal photography but restricts commercial use of images and other collected data. Writers and commercial creators should check permissions with Great Hollow before using material from the preserve.
Great Hollow’s visitor page describes the site as private property while providing public access under its visitor rules. Read the current rules and waiver information along with the map before setting out.

What to bring for a visit
Because there are no public restrooms or trash bins, a little preparation makes a short walk or longer hike easier. Bring drinking water and any food you plan to eat, and take your waste back with you. A small day pack is a practical way to carry those items; that is a general visitor suggestion, not an endorsement by Great Hollow. Wear footwear appropriate to your chosen route, especially if your map includes the steep ravine or ridge sections.
