GTA 5 on PS3 vs. Xbox 360: Graphics, Performance and Setup Compared

GTA 5 is broadly similar on PS3 and Xbox 360, but PS3 had clearer ground textures in a 2013 comparison. Frame-rate results varied by scene; installation and region rules also differ.

Grand Theft Auto V is essentially the same game on PS3 and Xbox 360, and both versions were reported at native 1280×720. The differences are small but visible: a 2013 comparison found clearer ground textures on PS3, while frame-rate results shifted with the scene rather than consistently favoring one console. For a physical copy, installation and region compatibility may be more decisive than graphics.

How different do the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions look?

Both versions were reported at native 1280×720, with broadly similar visual effects and detail. Rockstar said before release that the editions were developed in tandem and that it expected visual differences to be negligible; that was a pre-release expectation, not a claim that every later comparison would find them identical. Rockstar’s Q&A, reproduced by iGrandTheftAuto, gives that context.

PS3 has the clearer ground textures

A contemporaneous comparison summary by GamerGen, crediting Eurogamer and quoting Digital Foundry, reported that grass and concrete looked softer on Xbox 360, while those ground textures showed more detail on PS3. It described this as a recurring visual difference. The suggested connection to texture streaming was a possible explanation, not an established cause. The comparison otherwise characterized the editions’ effects and overall detail as similar. GamerGen’s September 18, 2013 comparison summary is the source for these historical visual findings.

Which version runs better?

Neither console is consistently smoother in every situation, according to that 2013 comparison. Both targeted 30 frames per second, and some sequences reportedly fell to around 20 fps. Xbox 360 could be closer to 30 fps in some cutscenes and gameplay, while PS3 could perform better in player-controlled action such as firefights and fast driving through the city.

#1 Best Overall
Sony Playstation 3 160GB System (Renewed)
  • Internet Ready With Built-in Wi-Fi with a Cell Broadband Engine Advanced Microprocessor
  • When starting up the system for the first time, hold the power button until a "screen display" message shows up on screen. Select the desired output, and the system will startup normally.
  • 160GB system
  • Blu-ray player to give you pristine picture quality
  • The best high-definition viewing experience available

Those are scene-specific observations from a launch-era comparison, not a guarantee for every console revision, display, or in-game moment. Digital Foundry’s overall preference in the comparison was PS3: its texture-filtering advantage mattered more to the assessment than Xbox 360’s limited performance edge. The practical takeaway is a close matchup, with PS3 favored for image clarity rather than an across-the-board frame-rate win.

How installation differs

The physical editions use different disc and storage arrangements. Rockstar’s support instructions, last updated April 17, 2024, specify the following: Grand Theft Auto V Xbox 360 and PS3 Installation Requirements.

  • 320GB HDD for storing games, music, videos, and photos
  • Streams thousands of movies and TV shows instantly from Netflix

Edition Discs and install What you need
PS3 One disc; installs roughly 8 GB after insertion. Play can begin when installation finishes. Enough console storage for the installation.
Xbox 360 Two discs. Disc 1 is used for a mandatory one-time install; Disc 2 is used to play. No disc switching is needed afterward. An Xbox 360 hard drive, or an external 16 GB USB flash drive with at least 8 GB free. Rockstar specifies USB 2.0, at least 15 MB/s read speed, and Xbox 360 formatting.

Xbox 360 installation tips

  • Install only the Install Disc. Rockstar advises against installing the Play Disc through the dashboard.
  • If using USB storage, the drive must meet the stated capacity, speed, interface, free-space, and Xbox 360 formatting requirements. Rockstar recommends a new flash drive for optimum performance.

Will a disc work in another region?

Rockstar’s region guidance, last updated April 20, 2024, says the PS3 edition is region-free. Xbox 360 copies are region-free except for the Japanese edition: a non-Japanese copy works on Xbox consoles, including Japanese consoles, while the Japanese edition works only on Japanese Xbox consoles. Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V: Region Locking guidance also warns that DLC and account-region compatibility can cause problems. If you plan to use add-ons, check that the game edition, console, account, and DLC regions are compatible before buying.
