Whether a blockbuster price rise could help the games industry is an unproven theory, and reported consumer research points to a potential cost: fewer people saying they would buy at $100.
Did an analyst say GTA 6 would cost $100?
No. Matthew Ball’s January 2025 State of Video Gaming in 2025 report described what some game makers hoped Take-Two would do; it was not Ball’s own price prediction. As PC Gamer quoted from the report: “But some gamemakers hope GTA 6 will be priced at $80—$100, breaking the $70 barrier and helping $50 titles to move up to $60, $60 to $70, $70 to $80, etc.”
GameSpot reported Ball’s own forecast as $70, while also describing the hope that a higher-priced GTA 6 could make subsequent increases seem more acceptable. What does GTA 6 cost now?
Rockstar’s official store listed the Standard Edition for $79.99 as checked October 8, 2026. That is the listed price at that point, not a guarantee of the price in every region or that it will remain unchanged. The official material reviewed does not establish a $100 price for an Ultimate Edition, so $100 should not be treated as the confirmed cost of any edition. See the Rockstar Store listing.

Rockstar lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with Standard and Ultimate editions. Its support page says the physical version is a code in a box, not a disc. Buyers should check that the code matches their platform and account region, since redemption depends on both. Details are on Rockstar Support.
How could a higher GTA 6 price affect other games?
The proposed mechanism is price anchoring: if a major release attracts enough buyers at a higher price, publishers might find it easier to raise prices on other games. Ball’s report described that possibility, including potential movement from $50 to $60, $60 to $70, and $70 to $80. It did not demonstrate that those increases would happen, that smaller studios could command the same prices as a blockbuster franchise, or that higher prices would fix the industry’s economic pressures.

There are competing considerations. A higher price brings in more money per copy, but may reduce the number of people willing to buy. Publishers may point to production costs and the value of a large game; players may weigh affordability, the contents of each edition, and whether the experience is worth the price. The available reporting documents the argument, but does not settle its long-term effects.
What does the consumer research suggest?
GameSpot reported that MIDiA Research found 60% of surveyed consumers said they would “definitely” or “probably” buy GTA 6 at $70, compared with 35% at $100. The same report attributed to MIDiA a model estimating that a $70 price could mean nearly 9% of U.S. adults buying the game—around 22.9 million copies—and roughly $1.6 billion in revenue. Those are modeled estimates reported in 2025, not confirmed sales or revenue. The figures illustrate the trade-off between revenue per copy and possible demand; they do not identify the optimal price.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has framed the company’s approach around perceived value. As quoted by GameSpot from earnings-call remarks, he said: “Our goal is to deliver way more value to consumers than what we charge them.” That is the publisher’s stated principle, not an independent measure of value or proof that a particular price is affordable for every player.
