“AAAAA” is Devolver Digital co-founder Nigel Lowrie’s informal description of Grand Theft Auto’s extraordinary scope, cultural reach and ability to command attention—not an official game rating or a verified measure of GTA VI’s budget, quality or sales prospects.
Who called GTA 6 an “AAAAA” game?
Lowrie used the phrase in an interview with IGN, as reported by GamesRadar on September 4, 2025. He said: “There are AAA games and then there’s AAAA games, and I’d argue that Grand Theft Auto is potentially the AAAAA game; it’s just bigger than anything else both in the scope and scale of the game and the kind of cultural impact that it has and the attention it demands.”
His wording is deliberately qualified: he said “I’d argue” and “potentially.” It is his opinion about the franchise, not an announcement of a new industry tier.
What does “AAAAA” mean here?
Lowrie was describing perceived scope and scale, cultural impact, and the attention Grand Theft Auto attracts. He did not set a budget threshold, technical standard or other measurable test for what would make a game “AAAAA.” The label therefore works as emphasis, not as a reliable way to compare production costs or quality.

The extra As also echo the “AAAA” label Ubisoft previously used for Skull and Bones, which drew jokes and criticism, as GamesRadar noted in its report. That history helps explain why these labels are often treated as rhetoric or marketing shorthand rather than formal classifications.
Why does GTA VI affect launch planning?
GamesRadar’s report connects Lowrie’s comment to publishers’ efforts to plan around GTA VI’s anticipated launch. It also quotes Gamesight CEO Adam Lieb saying GTA had been part of almost every conversation about launch dates he had heard. That is Lieb’s qualitative observation; the report does not provide a survey or a quantified measure of how many publishers are changing schedules.

The attention surrounding a major release can matter to other games competing for players and publicity. But Lowrie’s “AAAAA” remark, and Lieb’s observation, do not establish a specific commercial outcome for GTA VI or prove that any particular release will move its date.
Is “AAAAA” an official rating, or proof GTA 6 is bigger?
No formal standard or threshold for “AAAAA” is established in the cited coverage. Lowrie’s statement does not prove GTA VI’s budget, production scale, quality, sales, revenue or eventual cultural impact. It is a prediction and expression of opinion, not a verified result. The reporting supplies no relevant named statistic to substantiate those claims.
