A useful comparison starts with what each version is designed to ask of its player, then looks at shared dimensions such as world structure, controls, camera, story, and interaction.
First, be clear about which versions you mean
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time debuted as a Nintendo 64 action-adventure in November 1998, according to Nintendo’s developer interview. That original release belongs to a different hardware and design context from a 2026 game.
For a current retail comparison, distinguish that original from the Ocarina of Time edition listed for Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo describes this edition as having completely overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, enhanced controls, and modern camera movements. Those are Nintendo’s stated features, not a basis for assuming a particular resolution, frame rate, or performance level.
Grand Theft Auto VI is still upcoming as of October 7, 2026. Rockstar’s current store page and the Xbox listing give a November 19, 2026 release date. Take-Two’s May 6, 2025 announcement listed May 26, 2026, but that older date has been superseded by the later current listings. Rockstar support identifies digital and physical versions; the Xbox listing names Xbox Series X|S.

Compare design aims before judging freedom
A comparison works best when it asks what each game invites the player to do, rather than assuming that a larger or newer game must offer a better version of the same experience. Ocarina is identified by Nintendo as an action-adventure. GTA VI’s official material presents its story and protagonists, but the game has not launched, so its moment-to-moment play cannot yet be confirmed.
- Ask what the player attends to. Consider whether the experience centers on adventure, story, traversal, interaction, or a mixture. Do not assume matching priorities from the titles alone.
- Separate choice from scale. A large space is not automatically more meaningful or more open in the ways a player cares about. Look at what the game lets players choose and how those choices relate to its aims.
- Mark what is known. For Ocarina, version descriptions and historical context are available. For GTA VI, avoid treating anticipated gameplay or quality as observed fact.
Compare world structure by how spaces work
World structure is more useful than a simple open-world-versus-linear label. Ask how areas connect, how the game guides movement, and what it rewards players for exploring. Those questions apply to both titles without pretending they share a genre, scale, or pacing.

- Will take full advantage of the power of new generation systems and PC to deliver across-the-board enhancements including increased resolution and graphical detail, denser traffic, greater draw distances, upgraded AI, new wildlife, and advanced weather and damage effects for the ultimate open world experience.
- The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail.
- Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game’s three lead characters, playing all sides of the game’s interwoven story.
- Includes Grand Theft Auto Online, the ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe.
- All new content and gameplay created and released since the launch of Grand Theft Auto Online including new Jobs, an arsenal of new weapons, scores of new vehicles, new properties and player customizations
For the original Ocarina, keep observations tied to the Nintendo 64 release rather than silently importing details from the Switch 2 edition. The newer listing’s camera and control changes may affect how that version feels to navigate, but Nintendo’s feature description does not establish every detail of its world design. For GTA VI, wait for released gameplay before making claims about how freely players move through or interact with its spaces.
Controls and camera are part of the comparison
Controls shape what actions feel natural; the camera shapes how players read space and understand what is happening. They are not minor technical details that can be collapsed into a single score.

- This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19.
- Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
- Original Nintendo 64 Ocarina: Treat its controls and camera as part of a 1998 Nintendo 64 action-adventure, not as if they were designed for current hardware.
- Switch 2 Ocarina edition: Nintendo lists enhanced controls and modern camera movements. Those updates make version labeling especially important when discussing how the game plays today.
- GTA VI: No firsthand control or camera comparison is possible before release. Descriptions of how it handles should be identified as expectations, not confirmed play experience.
Compare narrative framing without guessing
Story comparison should focus on how each game frames its characters and the player’s activity. Nintendo identifies the original Ocarina as an action-adventure; its Switch 2 listing adds voiced cutscenes and expanded dialogue as features of that edition. Rockstar’s official material provides GTA VI’s premise and named protagonists, but trailer imagery alone does not establish how story and player activity will fit together during play.
That distinction matters: a disclosed premise is not the same as a played narrative, and an updated presentation is not the same as evidence that two games tell stories in comparable ways.

Put Ocarina’s historical impact in its own context
Ocarina of Time’s significance is partly historical: it arrived on Nintendo 64 in November 1998, when the surrounding hardware and conventions differed from those of a 2026 release. Nintendo’s history page says the game set new standards and broke pre-order records for any videogame to that point. That is Nintendo’s characterization; the page does not provide a numerical pre-order figure or establish that Ocarina invented every convention later used by games.
Take-Two reported that the Grand Theft Auto series had “over 440 million units sold-in worldwide” in its May 6, 2025 announcement. This is a franchise-wide figure, not sales for GTA VI, which had not been released. It indicates the scale of the series, but it is not a measure of either game’s design quality.

Treat technical presentation as context, not a score
Technical presentation tells you what an edition delivers on its hardware; it does not automatically determine which game is better. Nintendo says its Switch 2 edition has overhauled visuals and orchestral music, among other updates. The original Ocarina’s 1998 release and the updated edition are not interchangeable reference points.
Likewise, GTA VI’s release date and platform listings do not establish its final performance or quality. Until the game is available and directly evaluated, resolution, frame rate, responsiveness, and comparative visual performance should not be presented as known facts.
Use a version-aware checklist for your own comparison
- Name the edition: Say “original Nintendo 64 Ocarina of Time” or “the listed Switch 2 edition,” rather than using the title as if it referred to one unchanging release.
- Set the time and hardware context: Compare a 1998 Nintendo 64 release with a 2026 title as products of different moments, not as if they faced identical design conditions.
- Choose shared questions: Examine design aims, world structure, controls and camera, narrative framing, interaction, and technical presentation.
- Separate evidence from expectation: Use official descriptions for announced features and clearly label anything about GTA VI’s unobserved gameplay as a prediction.
- Make a qualified judgment: Decide which game better serves the experience you value, rather than forcing a universal winner from unlike goals and versions.
What the announced physical versions mean
Physical packaging is one concrete point of comparison, but it should not be confused with gameplay or ownership format more broadly. Rockstar says the GTA VI physical box contains a digital download code and no disc, according to its physical edition support page. Nintendo lists its Switch 2 Ocarina edition in physical and digital editions. Availability and listing details may vary by country and retailer.
