What happens to game purchases, online services, and player accounts when a publisher is acquired? There is no automatic, universal answer. An acquisition changes who controls the publisher; it does not, by itself, transfer your account, guarantee that a game remains available, or mean that servers will close. Your access depends on the game’s license, the store or platform account that holds it, any required publisher account, technical restrictions such as DRM, the applicable terms, and consumer law in your region.
The practical question is what rights and dependencies apply to a particular game—not simply who owns its publisher. As the U.S. Federal Trade Commission put it in an April 2024 consumer alert, “When you click the ‘buy’ button on a digital product, it really depends.” That is general consumer guidance, not a ruling about any one game. Does a digital game purchase mean you own a permanent copy?
Not necessarily. A store transaction may grant a license to use a game under specified conditions rather than ownership of an unrestricted copy. The FTC notes that digital access can depend on an account or platform remaining available, and that digital rights management (DRM) can limit where or how a game runs. The terms for the specific game and storefront matter; a change in the publisher’s ownership does not settle those terms. FTC guidance on digital products
It helps to separate the parts of access that players often treat as one thing:

- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
- The game entitlement: the license recorded by a store or platform account.
- The publisher account: an account that may be needed for multiplayer, cross-play, social features, or progression.
- Online services and content: servers, saves, downloadable content (DLC), virtual items, and other features that may depend on publisher systems.
- The means of running the game: platform compatibility, DRM, and any online connection or launcher requirement.
One part can remain available while another changes. For example, a store may still list a game in your library even if a publisher account or online service is required for some features.
Will your player account transfer to the new owner?
Do not assume that it will. A platform or storefront account and a publisher account are distinct, even when they are linked. Linking may support cross-play or progression, but it does not necessarily make an account, license, or in-game content transferable.
Activision’s terms provide one concrete example: they say the company does not recognize transfers of accounts or service-provided content. That is an example of Activision’s own terms, not a rule for every publisher or game. Activision terms of use

Check which account actually holds the game entitlement, whether the game requires a separate publisher login, and what happens to linked accounts and content under the applicable terms. The terms may treat a game license differently from an account, progression, or virtual items.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan the new owner shut down servers or remove online features?
An acquisition alone does not establish that servers will close—or that they will remain available indefinitely. Online play and other connected features depend on the publisher’s service plans, the game’s terms, and applicable regional rules. A title-specific notice is more useful than assuming the change in corporate ownership has a particular effect.
Activision’s published terms illustrate why region and circumstances matter. They describe service closure for economic reasons in certain circumstances and discuss possible revocation of access to products or service content. The terms also set out different conditions and notice language for specified regions, including the European Economic Area (EEA) and the United Kingdom. Those clauses should not be generalized into a claim that every publisher can shut down every game without notice everywhere. Activision terms of use Regional terms and service provisions

Separate the game’s components when assessing the risk: offline play, multiplayer, cloud saves, progression, DLC, and virtual items may have different dependencies. A purchased game can remain in a library while some online features are unavailable; conversely, an account or service change may affect access to content governed by that service. The specific game’s terms and any closure or transition notice are key.
What the Microsoft–Activision Blizzard deal changed for EEA cloud streaming
The Microsoft–Activision Blizzard transaction is a specific example of a merger remedy affecting access. In its May 2023 decision summary, the European Commission described a cloud-streaming competition concern and accepted licensing commitments lasting ten years. For eligible Activision Blizzard PC and console games, the commitments included a free consumer streaming license for EEA consumers who hold a license to the game, as well as a corresponding free license for streaming providers serving EEA-based gamers. Microsoft’s summary says that consumer or provider licenses taken during the commitment period endure perpetually, while the obligations themselves last ten years. “Perpetually” describes a license taken under this particular remedy; it does not mean every Activision Blizzard game, publisher account, online feature, or subscription lasts forever. - An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

How the consumer license works
Microsoft’s FAQ says a consumer who purchased an eligible game can use the consumer license. If a player accesses a game through a multi-game subscription instead, streaming is available only while the subscription is active and the game remains included. Microsoft says it charges consumers nothing beyond the game’s original acquisition cost for the consumer license; a cloud-streaming provider may still charge for its service. Provider participation is voluntary. Microsoft’s EEA streaming FAQ
What the remedy does not establish
- It is limited to eligible Activision Blizzard games and EEA consumers or providers under the commitment—not a global entitlement for every player.
- A streaming license is an access route, not a replacement for the underlying game license.
- It does not promise that a particular game will remain in a subscription or streaming catalog, or that its publisher account and online features will continue.
Microsoft listed NVIDIA GeForce NOW, Ubitus, Boosteroid, and Nware as providers with streaming agreements at the acquisition closing on October 13, 2023. That is a dated list of agreements at closing, not a guarantee about those providers’ current catalogs or operations. Microsoft announcement and provider list
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does cloud gaming protect access to a game you bought?
No. Cloud streaming can provide another way to play a supported game, but it does not secure a permanent entitlement or ensure that a publisher will maintain a title, account, or service. NVIDIA says users need sufficient rights to third-party games, and that availability can vary by publisher, region, language, provider, and over time. Not all content a user owns is necessarily streamable. NVIDIA GeForce NOW NVIDIA terms of use

Before relying on streaming, check that the game is eligible in your region, that your store account can be connected, that your device is supported, and whether the provider charges a fee or requires a subscription. Catalogs and saved-game availability can change; streaming availability is not a promise of permanent access.
What should you check for a game you already own?
- Find the entitlement. Check which store or platform account lists the game and whether a separate publisher account is required. FTC digital-product guidance Activision terms example
- Read the applicable terms. Look for provisions on licenses, account termination, transfer, service closure, and online-only features. Terms may differ by game, publisher, and region.
- Identify what depends on publisher systems. Check whether multiplayer, saves, progression, DLC, or virtual items are tied to a publisher account or service.
- Look for a title-specific notice. Check the publisher and platform’s announcements for transition plans, account changes, or service shutdown dates.
- Check whether a deal remedy applies to you. Confirm the country, game, and type of access covered. What is known about current regulatory concerns?
On the European Commission’s page dated September 30, 2026, the Consumer Protection Cooperation (CPC) Network’s coordinated action concerning Microsoft Corporation and Activision Blizzard was listed as ongoing. It concerns Call of Duty Mobile and Diablo Immortal. The page lists issues under examination including virtual currencies, data collection, game design, parental-control settings, pre-contract information, and unilateral account blocking. These are concerns being reviewed, not final findings of violations. The Commission says national enforcement measures may be considered if concerns remain. European Commission CPC Network joint statement
This action is distinct from the EEA cloud-streaming commitments: it concerns consumer-protection issues in two mobile games, not a general rule about what happens to every purchase or account after an acquisition.
