Its official premise follows Jason and Lucia into a criminal conspiracy across Leonida, including Vice City. Red Dead Redemption 2, by contrast, is a released 1899-set western with Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang—and confirmed systems such as an honor mechanic and wildlife Rockstar described as around 200 species. That gives players a useful contrast in setting and established features, but not grounds to rank GTA 6’s world against RDR2’s before launch.
What has Rockstar confirmed about GTA 6?
Rockstar’s official GTA VI page lists November 19, 2026 as the release date and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as platforms. Release plans can change, so check the page again closer to launch.
In its June 24, 2026 preorder notice, Rockstar said the physical package contains a download code inside the box, rather than a game disc, and that digital preloading is scheduled to begin November 12. Those details describe Rockstar’s announced plans, not a guarantee that schedules or products will remain unchanged.
Jason and Lucia in Leonida
Rockstar’s May 6, 2025 Trailer 2 announcement says an easy score goes wrong and pulls Jason and Lucia into a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida. The official trailer page identifies Vice City as a location in the game’s setting. This establishes a modern crime-story premise across a fictional state; it does not establish the full plot, the full map, or the extent of playable locations. Scenes in a trailer show what Rockstar chose to present, not necessarily the breadth or frequency of those experiences in the complete game.

How does that compare with Red Dead Redemption 2?
Rockstar’s launch-trailer description places RDR2 in America in 1899. After a robbery in Blackwater goes wrong, Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang flee from federal agents and bounty hunters. Internal divisions threaten the gang, and Arthur faces a choice between his ideals and his loyalty.
The premise creates a clear thematic contrast: GTA 6 is announced as a contemporary crime story involving two protagonists, while RDR2 tells a historical western story centered on Arthur and his gang. Rockstar’s descriptions do not demonstrate which story is better or longer, and they do not establish a like-for-like comparison of narrative structure.

What open-world systems are established?
RDR2 has documented honor consequences
Rockstar’s October 22, 2018 description of honor says the system is integrated into interactions with the world. It gives examples of actions that can raise or lower honor and says a player’s honor level brings consequences and benefits based on decisions. This is a documented feature of the released game.
Rockstar described around 200 wildlife species in RDR2
In a September 24, 2018 wildlife feature, Rockstar described the game’s habitats and climates as home to “around 200 species of animals, birds and fish,” which behave and respond to their environment in different ways. The figure is Rockstar’s published description, not an independent count.

Comparable GTA 6 mechanics have not been established
The cited GTA 6 announcements establish characters, a story premise, setting, platforms, and planned release timing. They do not establish an honor or morality system, a comparable wildlife count, mission structure, map dimensions, or overall world density. Rockstar may show environments and activities in official footage, but footage alone cannot establish how those elements work throughout the playable world.

What the platform history can—and cannot—tell you
Rockstar announced RDR2’s worldwide release for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 26, 2018, with Red Dead Online access included. Its PC release arrived November 5, 2019. These historical launch facts do not confirm current store stock, current editions, or how the game performs on modern hardware.

Rockstar’s October 2019 PC announcement listed features including increased draw distances, upgraded global illumination and ambient occlusion, improved snow trails and reflections, higher-resolution shadows, and updated tree, grass, and fur textures. It listed 150GB of disk space for that PC release. Those are historical PC details, not a valid performance comparison with GTA 6: no matched hardware benchmark or GTA 6 PC specification is established here.

The fairest expectation is that GTA 6 will offer a different setting and story from RDR2, while comparisons of their systems and world scale remain open. The official material cited here does not establish whether GTA 6 will have a morality mechanic like RDR2’s, how varied its wildlife will be, how missions are structured, or how large or densely interactive its world is. Those questions require specific announcements or the released game; the presence of evocative scenes in a trailer is not proof of equivalent features throughout the game.
