For native PC play, use the community GoldenEye 007 N64-source port: its v0.4.0 documentation covers Windows and Linux, keyboard and mouse, and a modern dual-stick controller layout. You must supply a supported NTSC-U N64 ROM yourself; the release does not include the game ROM or assets. The official Microsoft release has modern dual-analog controls too, but it is an Xbox console and cloud option—not a native Windows port.
Choose the right way to play

The PC port is built from reconstructed source for the 1997 N64 game, not from the Xbox 360 remaster. The project reports a full 20-mission single-player campaign and steady 60 fps in its own status/testing description; those are project-reported claims, not independent test results. It also labels v0.4.0 pre-1.0 and cautions that features may be missing and changes may break things. Read the project’s current release notes and status before choosing a build.
Install the native PC port
- Download and unpack the Windows or Linux release bundle from the project’s release page. The project supports Steam Deck as part of its Linux documentation. Project releases and documentation
- Create a folder named
databeside the game executable. - Place your supported ROM in that folder and name it
ge007.ntsc-final.z64. The documented input is a big-endian.z64ROM; the currently supported version is NTSC-U (US). PAL and Japanese versions are listed as roadmap items, not current support. - Launch the executable from that folder. On first run, the project says it detects the ROM and generates derived asset folders.
The release bundle contains no ROM or game assets. The project says, “You must supply your own GoldenEye 007 ROM.” Do not treat that distribution statement as legal advice: whether a particular copy or method of obtaining a ROM is lawful depends on jurisdiction and circumstances. Set up mouse and keyboard
The native port documents mouse aiming with a click-to-lock behavior, plus a choice between N64-style aiming and centered FPS-style aiming. It also supports per-device sensitivity, key rebinding, and crosshair options. Explore the input settings and adjust them to your preference; no single aim mode or sensitivity is right for everyone. Use a modern gamepad
The PC port documents a modern dual-stick layout, so a PC-compatible gamepad is optional rather than required. Use the project’s controller settings to configure input; the documentation does not establish compatibility for every controller model. Keyboard and mouse remain supported. What the official Xbox version offers
If playing on a PC is not essential, Microsoft’s official Xbox release is another way to get modern controls. Xbox Wire says the game offers modern options, including dual analog sticks, and supports up to four players in split-screen multiplayer; it also describes availability through Xbox Cloud Gaming. The Xbox product page lists the game as included with Game Pass, but subscription access and catalog availability can vary by territory and change over time; check the current listing and terms before relying on inclusion. Xbox product page
