Grand Theft Auto VI is currently scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The unusually long wait since GTA V has not been described by Rockstar or Take-Two as a 13-year development cycle spent on one project. Take-Two says Rockstar spent that period expanding GTA V across platforms, operating GTA Online and building GTA VI to the quality standard expected of the series.
When does GTA 6 come out?
The announced launch date is November 19, 2026. The game is announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with an announced price of $79.99. Those are the only launch platforms identified in Take-Two’s preorder notice.

Rockstar has not announced a PC version or a PC release date in the notices cited for this article. A PC edition should therefore be treated as unconfirmed rather than assumed to launch alongside the console versions.

Was GTA 6 delayed again?
Yes. GTA VI moved through three public windows:
- An initial 2025 release window.
- May 26, 2026.
- November 19, 2026, the current announced date.
The move from May to November 2026 was reported as another six-month delay. In its November 2025 notice, Rockstar apologized for adding to the wait and said the extra months were needed to finish the game with “the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.” Take-Two chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick has made the same argument, saying that if a game needs more polish to become the best possible version of itself, the company will give it more time.

Why has the gap since GTA V been so long?
Take-Two’s explanation is that the interval was filled by several large undertakings, not by inactivity. Zelnick said it is not as simple as asking what Rockstar had been doing for 13 years: “The answer is they’ve been up to quite a lot.”
GTA V kept expanding
GTA V was relaunched for PC and remade for each new console generation. Those versions required engineering, testing and platform-specific support after the original game’s 2013 release.

GTA Online became an ongoing service
Rockstar also launched and operated GTA Online, adding a continuing service layer to the GTA ecosystem. Maintaining a major online game competes for development capacity with a new single-player sequel, while also creating a business reason to keep improving the existing title.
GTA VI is being built at blockbuster scale
Zelnick attributes the remaining gap to “the amount of time it takes to do something that is as good as it can possibly be for that intellectual property.” That is a quality and scope explanation, not a promise that every future GTA game will require the same number of years.

Why could Rockstar afford such a long wait?
The existing GTA business remained exceptionally strong. Take-Two reported that GTA V had sold in more than 225 million units by its 2026 update. The same update reported 27% year-over-year growth in recurrent consumer spending for the Grand Theft Auto series. Those figures help explain how Take-Two could continue funding a long sequel cycle while GTA V and GTA Online generated substantial revenue.
Strong ongoing sales do not prove that GTA Online alone caused the delay. They do show that the previous game remained commercially valuable while Rockstar worked on its successor.

Does Rockstar promise the next game will arrive sooner?
The cautious answer is that Take-Two says it has a plan, but has not guaranteed a release interval for a named future game. Zelnick said the company is “not a cadence-driven company” and does not necessarily plan around a fixed schedule for its properties. He also said that when Take-Two sets a date, it believes in it.

It supports an intention to manage future releases differently, but it is not a promise that GTA 7—or any other Rockstar project—will launch within a particular number of years after GTA VI. The company’s stated priority remains finishing each game to the required standard.
What the current facts mean for players
- Console players: the announced target is November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- PC players: no PC launch or timing has been announced in the cited notices, so there is no confirmed day-one PC version.
- Players concerned about another delay: November 19 is the current announced date, but the history of moves from 2025 to May 2026 and then November 2026 shows that announced dates can change.
- Players asking whether GTA Online caused everything: online operations were one part of Rockstar’s workload, alongside ports, remakes and GTA VI’s development; Take-Two does not reduce the explanation to GTA Online alone.
Bottom line on the “fluke” claim
Calling the 13-year gap a “fluke” is an interpretation, not a Rockstar admission. The documented explanation is a combination of continued GTA V and GTA Online work, multiple platform releases and the time required to finish GTA VI to Rockstar’s quality bar. GTA VI is currently dated for November 19, 2026, and Take-Two’s comments suggest the company wants future planning to avoid a predictable cadence—but they do not guarantee that the next Rockstar game will arrive quickly.
