Rockstar Games confirmed that an unauthorized third party entered its network and downloaded confidential information, including early development footage of the next Grand Theft Auto. That validates the existence and origin of the leaked material, but it does not make every later clip, map theory or rumor about GTA 6 authentic.
What Rockstar confirmed about the GTA 6 leak
On September 18, 2022, dozens of videos and screenshots claiming to show an unfinished Grand Theft Auto VI build spread across the internet. The footage showed an early version of a modern Vice City-style setting, character conversations, driving, shooting and other systems that were visibly incomplete.

Rockstar later acknowledged the incident in a statement reproduced by GamesRadar. The company wrote: “We recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto.”

That is an official confirmation that the 2022 material came from a real intrusion and included genuine development footage—not a fan-made hoax or a fabricated concept video.

What the confirmation proves—and what it does not
The confirmed facts
- Rockstar’s network was accessed by an unauthorized third party in 2022.
- Confidential information was downloaded.
- The stolen material included early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto.
- The leaked videos and screenshots corresponded to a genuine in-development build.
The limits of the evidence
The confirmation does not authenticate every file or claim that appeared online after the breach. It does not establish that an anonymous map image, alleged character list, release rumor or later “leak” came from Rockstar. Nor does footage from an early build guarantee that a feature, mission, interface or location will appear in the finished game.
Development footage is evidence of what the studio was testing at a particular time. Games change during production: systems are removed, missions are rewritten, visual assets are replaced and performance targets shift. The safest conclusion is therefore narrow: the 2022 leak was genuine, while each additional claim requires its own evidence.
Why the 2022 footage was unusually convincing
The material contained the sort of technical detail associated with an internal build rather than a polished fan project: debugging overlays, unfinished animations, placeholder assets, development menus and multiple views of the same systems. None of those details alone would prove provenance, but Rockstar’s later statement supplied the decisive confirmation.
Rank #2
The incident also explains why some clips looked inconsistent. A development build can contain temporary art, test environments and content at different stages of completion. Differences in quality between videos are not, by themselves, evidence that the entire leak was fake.
How to judge later GTA 6 rumors
| Test | Stronger evidence | Weaker evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Source authority | A Rockstar or Take-Two announcement, store listing or named company statement | An anonymous social-media account or repost with no provenance |
| Provenance | Material tied to the confirmed 2022 intrusion and recognizable development tools | A standalone image, cropped clip or alleged document with no verifiable chain of custody |
| Date | The September 2022 incident and information clearly associated with that build | Later files presented as “new leaks” without independent confirmation |
| Scope | A claim limited to what the footage visibly shows | A broad prediction about the entire map, story or launch version |
This framework separates “the leak was real” from “every rumor attached to it is true.” The former is officially established; the latter is not.
What Rockstar has officially revealed about GTA 6
Rockstar’s official game announcement identifies Leonida as the setting, including modern Vice City, and names Jason and Lucia as the two protagonists. Rockstar describes them as partners drawn into a criminal conspiracy across the state. Those details are official game information, not deductions from the 2022 breach.

Take-Two’s December 4, 2023 announcement said GTA VI would launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and described Leonida as home to “the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond.” Rockstar founder Sam Houser said: “Grand Theft Auto VI continues our efforts to push the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences.”
Take-Two’s May 6, 2025 release for Trailer 2 stated that the footage was captured on PlayStation 5 and listed a May 26, 2026 launch date at that time. Rockstar’s current store listing supersedes that earlier date with November 19, 2026. The current listing names PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the supported platforms.

The current Rockstar store page lists a physical edition, but it is a code-in-box product: “Physical versions will only contain a download code inside the box … A disc will not be included in the box.” Anyone buying a boxed copy should therefore have the appropriate console, internet access and enough storage to download the game.
Rank #4
Rockstar lists itself as both developer and publisher. Take-Two’s 2025 Trailer 2 press release also reported 440 million units sold-in worldwide for the Grand Theft Auto series; that figure describes the franchise’s overall sales, not the number of leaked copies or the impact of the intrusion.
The clear answer to the rumor
If the question is “Were the GTA 6 leaks real?” the answer is yes for the September 2022 development-footage leak. Rockstar confirmed the network intrusion and the theft of early footage. If the question is whether every subsequent GTA 6 rumor is legitimate, the answer is no: authenticity must be assessed claim by claim, using official announcements and verifiable provenance rather than the existence of the original breach.
