A police chase has more to it than how many officers arrive. The useful questions are what brings law enforcement into the situation, whether a witness or identification can be disrupted, what ends the immediate pursuit, what consequences remain afterward, and how much the player can manipulate the surroundings.

On those questions, the available detail is uneven. RDR2’s wanted mechanics are described in a game-specific guide; Ubisoft’s official Watch Dogs pages establish the series’ technology-led premise, but not exact police AI or escape rules. The GTA material below does not establish GTA V’s detailed rules, and GTA VI details should not be carried over to it.
Red Dead Redemption 2: a wanted state can outlast the chase
RDR2.org’s Wanted System guide describes a response that can begin when a witness reports a crime. Lawmen may investigate, and identification can escalate the player into a wanted and bounty state. The guide also says lawmen may investigate a crime scene even if no witness report has been made. These are details from a fan-maintained guide, not a formal Rockstar system specification.

Breaking contact
According to the guide, the immediate wanted status can end after the player leaves the marked search area, lawmen lose sight of them, and the wanted meter empties. That distinction matters: escaping the active search does not necessarily erase every consequence of the crime.
What can remain afterward
The guide describes a bounty as a continuing consequence that can bring bounty hunters after the player. RDR2 therefore gives the law response a longer arc than simply losing the pursuers: a player may break contact now and still face pressure later.

Rockstar’s official Red Dead Redemption Essentials Manual offers a useful comparison, but it covers the earlier Red Dead Redemption, not RDR2. It says: “You will remain Wanted as long as lawmen or civilians can see you. You can lose your Wanted Level by breaking their line of sight and hiding from the law.” The manual also says: “Even if you manage to evade the law posses, deadly bounty hunters will come after you.” Those lines should not be treated as proof that every detail works identically in RDR2; they do, however, show that a wanted state and later bounty-hunter threat were part of the earlier game’s design too.

GTA: keep GTA V and GTA VI separate
“GTA” can refer to multiple games, and the title does not name an installment. GTA’s familiar wanted-level chase is an action-escalation frame, but the material available here does not verify a detailed, matched set of GTA V rules for witnesses, police recognition, search areas, escape timers or lingering consequences. It would be misleading to state those specifics as universal GTA mechanics.

A GamesRadar+ report dated August 27, 2026, quoting Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson and discussing GTA VI footage, describes that game’s wanted system as requiring a witnessed crime or an alarm to report it. It also reports recognition indicators involving clothing and vehicles, and escape tactics such as switching vehicles or moving on foot. Those are GTA VI details—not established GTA V mechanics and not a safe description of every GTA entry.
Watch Dogs: city hacking is the distinctive frame
Ubisoft’s official Watch Dogs page describes protagonist Aiden Pearce as a hacker who can manipulate city systems including traffic lights and the electrical grid, with Chicago as the setting. Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs 2 page describes Marcus Holloway and DedSec operating around ctOS 2.0 in the San Francisco Bay Area.

That premise makes environmental manipulation central to how Watch Dogs is framed: the player character is a hacker in a city structured by connected systems. The official pages cited here do not establish exact police dispatch triggers, search radius, cooldown, witness interruption or escape procedures. So it is fair to contrast the technology-led setting with RDR2’s documented witness-and-bounty arc, but not to claim a specific Watch Dogs police AI behavior from these descriptions alone.

Which game makes escape a longer process?
From the mechanics documented here, RDR2 is the clearest example of pursuit extending beyond the immediate chase: losing sight of lawmen and clearing the wanted meter can end the active state, while a bounty may still lead to later hunters. Watch Dogs is most distinct in its technology-driven premise, but the cited official descriptions are not enough to compare its pursuit rules step by step. GTA remains installment-dependent; the reported recognition and vehicle-switching details belong to GTA VI, not GTA V.
