Steam Playtest is a chance to try a test build; Steam Early Access is a purchase of a playable game that is still being developed. Playtest access may be limited or switched off by the developer. With Early Access, decide whether the game is worth its price in its current state, rather than relying on promised future features or a completion date.
What is the difference between Steam Playtest and Early Access?

What should you expect from a Steam Playtest?
A Playtest is for trying a build and, where the developer asks for it, helping test the game. It is not a purchase of the full game or a promise that you will be able to play it later. Steam ties the Playtest to the main game through a separate child app ID, while signups appear on the main game’s store page.

The developer chooses how many players to admit and can deactivate the Playtest. A signup or request therefore does not guarantee access, and access to a test should not be treated as permanent. Check the game’s live Steam page for its current signup and access status.

Do not assume the test is confidential
Steam says Playtest participants are not under nondisclosure agreements by default. A Playtest may be gated, but that alone does not mean players are bound to keep what they see secret.
What should you expect when buying Early Access?
Early Access means paying for a playable work in progress. Steam’s guidance says the product should be worth its current price and that buyers should receive a playable product at purchase—not a promise of a future delivery. Valve puts the decision plainly: “Customers should be buying your game based on its current state, not on promises of a future that may or may not be realized.” (Steam Early Access documentation.)

Judge what is available now
Read the game’s current store description and Early Access questionnaire. Look for what is playable today, what is missing, any stated limitations, whether updates may break saves, and how the developer plans to receive feedback. Steam’s store review process asks developers to explain the product’s present state and what remains; that information is more useful to a buyer than an unqualified promise of future content. Plans are not guarantees
Development plans, features, and timelines can change. Steam advises developers against making specific promises about future events because completion and timing are uncertain. Treat stated plans as intentions, not commitments on which to base the purchase.

It is not a preorder or crowdfunding pledge
Steam’s Early Access guidance distinguishes buying a playable product from pre-purchasing a future game or funding a project. If you would not pay the current price for the build as it exists, the prospect of later updates is not a reliable substitute for present value.
How to choose between them
Join a Playtest if you want to try a test build
- Check whether signup is open on the main game’s store page.
- Understand that the developer may cap access or turn the Playtest off.
- Approach it as an opportunity to try a build and potentially give feedback, not as access to the finished game.
Buy Early Access only if the current game is worth it to you
- Read the current store description and developer questionnaire before buying.
- Identify what you can play now and which features or content are still absent.
- Consider disclosed limitations and the possibility of save-affecting updates.
- Decide based on today’s build and price, without counting on a particular feature or completion date.
Is Steam Early Access the same as Advance Access?
No. Steam’s Advance Access is a pre-purchase benefit that lets some customers play before a broader release. Early Access, by contrast, signals that the game being sold is still in development. Valve explicitly distinguishes the two in its Advance Access documentation. The phrase “early access” may be used more broadly by other platforms for launch-day head starts, so check how a specific Steam page labels the offer.
