GTAV Enhanced launched for PC on March 4, 2025. It is a free upgrade for existing PC owners and adds ray-traced lighting, SSD- and DirectStorage-based loading improvements, modern upscaling technologies, higher-resolution and framerate support, DualSense features, and enhanced audio with Dolby Atmos support. These features are not universal: your graphics card, storage, Windows configuration, drivers, and audio equipment determine which benefits you can use.
Rockstar renamed the original PC version GTAV Legacy and continues to provide it alongside Enhanced. That matters for older PCs, mod and FiveM compatibility, and GTA Online players whose friends use a different version.

What the GTA V Enhanced PC upgrade adds
Enhanced is more than a graphics preset. It is a separate, more demanding PC version with technical features and GTA Online content based partly on the latest-generation console release.

Rockstar’s feature overview identifies the four ray-traced categories separately. It is therefore misleading to say that every part of GTA V’s ray tracing was newly created for PC: shadows and reflections had already appeared on the latest-generation console versions, while ambient occlusion and global illumination are identified as PC additions.
Current GTAV Enhanced PC requirements
Rockstar’s system-requirements page, updated December 10, 2025, lists the following requirements for Enhanced, not Legacy.

See Rockstar’s current requirements for installation, online-authentication, and software prerequisites. Internet access, a Rockstar account, and related network or launcher components are required for installation and online play. Rockstar also notes that requirements can change with future downloadable content or programming changes.
The minimum specification is not a promise of high-quality ray-traced performance. Likewise, the recommended RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT should not automatically be treated as a guarantee of maximum ray tracing at a particular resolution; Rockstar does not provide a universal framerate claim in these requirements.
Ray tracing: better lighting, higher GPU demand
Ray tracing is most apparent in situations where light and reflections are easy to inspect: night scenes, interiors, wet streets, vehicle bodies, glass, and slow camera movement. Ambient occlusion can add depth around objects, shadows can look more natural, and global illumination can make indirect light behave more plausibly.
The trade-off is GPU workload. Enabling multiple ray-traced effects can reduce performance, especially at high resolutions. Upscaling can help offset that cost, but it is not free of compromises: reconstruction may produce softness, ghosting, or other artifacts depending on the setting and hardware.

Frame generation is different from upscaling. Upscaling reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render. Frame generation creates additional displayed frames to make motion appear smoother. It may improve perceived fluidity, but it can add latency or visual artifacts and does not eliminate the time required to render the underlying game frames.

DirectStorage is a data-delivery technology, not a graphics feature. Rockstar describes Enhanced as offering faster loading through SSD and DirectStorage on supported devices and configurations.
An SSD is required even at minimum. The recommended specification calls for a DirectStorage-compatible drive. That wording does not establish a required PCIe generation, so buying an expensive PCIe 5.0 NVMe drive solely for GTA V is not justified by Rockstar’s requirements.
Moving the game from a conventional hard drive to an SSD is the relevant first step for a system that still uses a hard disk. Actual loading behavior can vary with the drive, Windows configuration, CPU, installation state, and other system activity. A faster GPU alone will not reproduce the intended storage benefit.
What Dolby Atmos support really requires
Enhanced supports Dolby Atmos and improved audio fidelity, but support does not mean every PC speaker or headset automatically outputs Atmos. Rockstar’s recommended audio specification calls for a Windows Spatial Sound-compatible audio system and a Dolby Atmos-capable solution for the Atmos experience.

The complete audio chain matters:
- Choose the correct Windows playback device.
- Enable the appropriate Windows spatial-audio setting.
- Use a compatible headset, soundbar, receiver, television, or other licensed Atmos solution.
- Check the device’s own input or surround mode.
- Verify the game’s audio-output selection.
Dolby Atmos for a home theater and Dolby Atmos for headphones are different use cases. Ordinary stereo headphones, speakers, or generic 5.1 hardware should not be described as automatically Atmos-capable. If your current setup sounds good in stereo, you do not need to buy new audio equipment merely to install Enhanced.

Legacy is not merely an optional downgrade. It remains useful when a PC cannot meet Enhanced’s requirements, when a role-play or mod community has not moved, or when a player values established compatibility more than the newer visuals. Friends must launch the same version to play together.
GTA Online and Story Mode migration warnings
Migration is not ordinary cloud synchronization. Back up or carefully verify the progress you intend to use before confirming a transfer. The relevant migrations are limited and cannot simply be undone.
Story Mode
Story Mode progress can be uploaded from Legacy and migrated to Enhanced. Rockstar’s migration instructions state that the save can be migrated to Enhanced only once, and progress cannot be copied back from Enhanced to Legacy. If you need to replace the uploaded save before migration, the upload can be updated during the applicable preloading process.
GTA Online
GTA Online character progress can also be migrated once. The transfer includes characters, GTA$, progression, statistics, vehicles, properties, weapons, clothing, and player-created jobs. It does not delete the Legacy progress, but the migration itself cannot be reversed.
Before confirming, check the character, money, properties, and other progress shown by the migration screen. If your friends, crew, or role-play community are staying on Legacy, moving your character does not bring the two online versions into the same session.

Rockstar details these additions in its pre-release announcement. GTA+ is optional and is not required to use the core Enhanced upgrade.

Upgrade if you own a capable gaming PC
Enhanced is the sensible choice if your system has the required SSD, meets the minimum GPU and operating-system requirements, and you want ray-traced lighting, newer GTA Online content, higher display options, or PC access to GTA+ where available. Existing PC owners do not pay an additional upgrade fee.
Stay on Legacy if compatibility is more important
Legacy is the safer choice if your PC falls below the requirements, your FiveM or mod setup depends on the older version, your community plays there, or you want to minimize hardware and migration risk. You can retain access to Legacy rather than being forced to abandon it.
Do not buy hardware for one feature alone
An SSD is the practical requirement for Enhanced. A GPU upgrade makes sense if you also want stronger ray-traced performance, higher resolutions, or better results in other games. DirectStorage does not require a named PCIe tier in Rockstar’s published requirements, and Dolby Atmos does not require every player to purchase a new audio system.
Availability and cost
Existing PC owners received Enhanced as a free upgrade and access to Legacy. New purchasers receive access to both versions according to Rockstar’s launch announcement, but the game itself is not universally free for new buyers.

Enhanced troubleshooting checklist
Enhanced will not launch
- Confirm Windows meets the listed build requirement and install current system and graphics-driver updates.
- Check that the GPU meets the required DirectX 12-compatible hardware level. Rockstar added a launch error for systems without a required DirectX 12-compatible video card in an early post-release update; see the title-update notes.
- Verify that the game is installed on the required SSD.
- If the PC cannot meet Enhanced’s requirements, launch Legacy instead.
Loading is not noticeably faster
Verify the installation location, confirm the game is not still on a hard drive, and check whether the storage configuration meets Rockstar’s DirectStorage wording. Rockstar does not promise a fixed loading-time reduction.
Friends cannot join
Confirm that every player is launching either Enhanced or Legacy. The two versions use separate GTA Online sessions.
Progress is missing
Upload the relevant Story Mode save from Legacy and use Enhanced’s migration option. For GTA Online, inspect the displayed character and account information before confirming the one-time transfer. Story Mode progress cannot be copied back to Legacy, and GTA Online migration cannot be reversed.

Dolby Atmos is unavailable
Check the selected Windows playback device, spatial-sound setting, device compatibility, receiver or soundbar mode, and in-game audio output. Windows spatial audio alone does not prove that the complete playback chain is delivering Atmos.
Bottom line
GTA V Enhanced is a substantial, free PC upgrade for existing owners, but the headline needs qualification. It launched on March 4, 2025; it does not turn every PC into a ray-traced system; and its DirectStorage and Dolby Atmos benefits depend on compatible hardware and configuration. For a modern gaming PC, Enhanced is the version to choose for newer visuals and GTA Online features. For older hardware, mod-heavy setups, or Legacy-based communities, keeping the original version remains a valid decision.
