Rockstar’s current missing-vehicle instructions cover GTA Online; they do not establish a fix for Story Mode. The widely reported Story Mode garage issue dates to September 2013, when Rockstar said there was no workaround to recover a missing car at that time.
First, identify the game mode
GTA V Story Mode and GTA Online handle vehicle storage differently, so the right check depends on where the vehicle disappeared. The current Rockstar support procedures below are for GTA Online only.

- Story Mode: A September 2013 report linked complaints particularly to upgrading a vehicle and then completing a mission. That reported pattern does not show that every missing Story Mode vehicle has the same cause.
- GTA Online: Rockstar lists checks for vehicles that may be stored elsewhere, destroyed, impounded, or displaced after a garage capacity change.
GTA Online: check these recovery routes
Look through the Mechanic’s vehicle list
- Enter Freemode and call the Mechanic.
- Choose the relevant property, garage, or garage floor in the vehicle list.
- Request the vehicle. Rockstar says a delivered vehicle appears near your character. There is a two-minute cooldown between vehicle calls. Rockstar’s missing-vehicle instructions
Check garage organization on supported platforms
On PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC Enhanced, open Interaction Menu → Manage Vehicles → Vehicle Organization. Inspect the garages and move the vehicle if it is stored in a different location. Rockstar’s instructions for this menu do not list other platforms. Rockstar’s missing-vehicle instructions
Recover a destroyed or impounded vehicle
- Destroyed and insured: Claim it through Mors Mutual Insurance.
- Impounded: Recover it from the police impound lot, or use the documented CEO Assistant option if eligible.
These recovery options apply to GTA Online vehicle states described by Rockstar, not to Story Mode cars. Rockstar’s missing-vehicle instructions

Check whether a garage capacity change displaced it
If you replaced a garage with one that holds fewer vehicles, Rockstar says vehicles that no longer fit are placed in storage rather than permanently erased. Use the Mechanic to retrieve one when there is a free space, or use a larger garage. Rockstar’s garage-change guidance
If the Mechanic is unavailable
Rockstar documents a GTA$50 in-game fee per in-game day for the GTA Online Mechanic. If you did not have enough funds for the fee, make sure at least GTA$50 is available and wait until the next in-game day for processing. If the contact remains unavailable, submit a support request to Rockstar. This fee and procedure concern GTA Online only.

GameSpot reported on September 23, 2013 that Rockstar was responding to reports of cars disappearing from garages, particularly after players upgraded a vehicle and then completed a mission. Rockstar’s statement at the time was: “Unfortunately, we do not currently have a workaround to recover a car if it is missing.” The report did not establish a universal cause or a current solution for every platform.
Rockstar also cautioned at the time that a vehicle saved in one safehouse garage might not appear in another safehouse’s garage. The report relayed period-specific precautions while the issue was being investigated; those are historical advice, not a verified current fix. GameSpot’s September 2013 report

That historical response does not confirm whether the issue persists unchanged today, nor does Rockstar’s current GTA Online guidance answer Story Mode recovery questions. There is no incidence rate established in the cited sources.
