What happened in the Rockstar intrusion?
Rockstar confirmed in September 2022 that a third party had illegally obtained confidential information, including early-development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto. The videos first appeared on GTAForums and then spread online. They showed unfinished development material, not a reliable representation of the finished game. Rockstar’s statement, reproduced by Ars Technica, said work on the game would continue as planned.

The intrusion—not simply the posting or sharing of footage—was the crime at issue in the later proceedings. Rockstar said confidential information had been obtained illegally; the leaked clips were part of that material.
Who was identified in the case, and how old was he?
The person linked to the intrusion was Arion Kurtaj. The “16-year-old” description is incomplete if read as his age at every point in the case: sentencing coverage says he carried out a wider series of attacks while aged 16 and 17, and was 18 at his December 2023 sentencing. Early reports about an arrested 17-year-old should not be treated as, by themselves, proof of the later connection. Sky News’s sentencing report provides the age and sentencing context.

What did the jury decide?
At Southwark Crown Court in 2023, psychiatrists had assessed Kurtaj as unfit to stand trial. The jury therefore considered whether he had committed the alleged acts, rather than deciding guilt or innocence through an ordinary criminal trial. The Associated Press reported that jurors found he had committed 12 offenses. A second defendant, who was 17 at the time, was convicted of several offenses. What sentence did Kurtaj receive?
In December 2023, Kurtaj received an indefinite hospital order under the Mental Health Act, with a Section 41 restriction. It was not a fixed prison sentence. The restriction means his discharge is subject to legal control. Sky News reported that Rockstar’s external assistance alone had cost $1.5 million (around £1.2 million), citing Judge Patricia Lees. That was not a total-damage figure: the judge described the loss of marketing opportunities as “unquantifiable.”

What is the latest reported status?
A July 16, 2026 report by PC Gamer, citing BBC correspondent Joe Tidy, said Kurtaj had left secure hospital and was in a normal prison, awaiting a conventional criminal trial scheduled for November 2026. Tidy said reporting restrictions had been lifted that day, but that police had not confirmed the transfer to him. This is a reported update, not a primary court record or independently confirmed police statement; the schedule and status may change. PC Gamer’s report attributes the update to Tidy.
