If GTA V shows “Unable to launch game, please verify game data” in the Epic Games Launcher, verify the installation first—but do not assume the files are necessarily corrupted. The same launch failure, commonly associated with Epic error LS-0013, can also involve Epic’s cache, Rockstar Games Launcher, permissions, security software, mods, duplicate installations, or network services.
These steps apply to GTA V on Windows launched through Epic Games Launcher. Follow them in order so you can repair the likely cause without immediately reinstalling the game.

1. Verify GTA V in Epic Games Launcher
This is the safest first step. Epic says verification checks for missing or damaged files and repairs files that differ from the expected installation. It does not affect saved data.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Open Library.
- Find GTA V and click its three-dot menu.
- Select Manage.
- Click Verify.
Wait for the process to finish. GTA V is a large installation, so verification and any required download may take time. Do not interrupt it unless the launcher is clearly frozen for an extended period. When it completes, close and reopen Epic Games Launcher, then try GTA V again.
#1 Best Overall
- Launch effective distance: 8ft.
- Great gifts for kids.
- Easy to operate: built-in rechargeable battery and motor, just gently press the reel-in switch for about 4 seconds. Then press the spring for the next launch.
- ADSORBING METAL SURFACES: There are magnets at the head of the rope.
- A variety of ways to play: a light press on the launch switch to shoot. The head with a magnet can be adhere to iron products after being launched. If the magnet is replaced with a suction cup, the head can be adhere to a smooth and flat object (such as glass).
See Epic’s file-verification instructions for the documented behavior.
2. Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache
If verification passes—or repairs files but the same message returns—clear Epic’s web cache. A damaged cache can prevent the launcher from correctly handing GTA V to Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Exit Epic completely. Open the Windows system-tray overflow area, right-click the Epic Games icon, and select Exit.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
%localappdata%and press Enter. - Open
EpicGamesLauncherSaved. - Delete these folders if they are present:
webcachewebcache_4147webcache_4430 - Reopen Epic Games Launcher and try GTA V.
Folder suffixes can vary, and not every folder will exist. Epic says the launcher rebuilds this cache when it starts again. Follow its cache-clearing guidance if the folder layout differs.

Although you bought GTA V through Epic, the launch process may involve Rockstar Games Launcher. A permission mismatch between Epic, Rockstar, and the game can stop the handoff.
- Close Epic Games Launcher and Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Right-click Epic Games Launcher and select Run as administrator.
- If Rockstar opens separately, close it and relaunch it at the same permission level.
- Start GTA V from Epic rather than launching an unrelated
GTA5.exemanually.
Treat administrator mode as a diagnostic test, not automatically as a permanent fix. Epic’s LS-0013 guidance also identifies situations where administrator privileges should be disabled. Leaving one component permanently elevated while another is not can create further permission inconsistencies.
Check a UAC prompt carefully
Some players have reported that declining a Windows prompt for Rockstar Games Installer or another Rockstar executable resulted in the same verify-data message. This is a community report, not proof that every prompt is safe.
Before selecting Yes, check that the prompt names a legitimate Epic or Rockstar executable. Do not approve an unknown program, disable UAC, or download a replacement executable from an unofficial site. If the prompt repeatedly appears, investigate the executable’s permissions and compatibility instead.
4. Test a clean launch
Epic lists background applications as a possible cause of LS-0013. Close nonessential software, restart Windows, and launch Epic and GTA V before reopening overlays or utilities.
Temporarily close:
- Game overlays and third-party launchers
- Mod managers, trainers, script hooks, and ASI loaders
- Hardware-monitoring or overclocking utilities
- Capture and streaming software
- Aggressive antivirus utilities or other programs that inject into games
If GTA V works, reopen those programs one at a time until you identify the conflict. Do not permanently disable all security software merely to test the game.
5. Remove mods and restore a clean installation
If GTA V worked before you installed mods, modified files are a leading branch to investigate. Script hooks, trainers, graphics modifications, and replacement files can prevent the game or Rockstar’s launcher from starting.
Back up mod configuration files separately, then return the game to an unmodified state before troubleshooting further. Verification may replace modified original files, but it may not remove every extra file added by a mod. After removing modifications, run verification again.

This guidance concerns a legitimate Epic installation. Do not mix these steps with unofficial or pirated copies, which can have different files and launch behavior.
6. Check antivirus, firewall, and ransomware protection
Security software can block launcher communication, quarantine a legitimate file, or prevent the launcher from writing required data. Check your antivirus quarantine and firewall history for blocked Epic, Rockstar, or GTA V components.
Use narrowly scoped, temporary testing:
- Restore or allow only files you can verify as belonging to Epic, Rockstar, or your installed game.
- Check whether Windows ransomware or controlled-folder protection blocked a launcher write operation.
- Add an appropriate exception only after confirming the executable and its location.
- Re-enable protection after testing if you temporarily changed it.
Do not download “fix” DLLs, cracked launchers, or replacement executables. If security software repeatedly flags a file, investigate the detection rather than blindly bypassing it.
7. Fix Rockstar handoff, network, and service problems
If Rockstar Games Launcher never opens, focus on the launcher, permissions, and security checks above. If the launcher opens but cannot sign in or contact its services, investigate the network branch instead.

Flush the Windows DNS cache
Open Command Prompt and run:
ipconfig /flushdns
Then restart Epic Games Launcher and try again. This clears Windows’ local DNS resolver cache; it does not repair GTA V files and cannot fix an Epic or Rockstar outage. Epic also recommends checking network restrictions such as parental controls in relevant LS-0013 cases.
Check the current Epic Games status page and Rockstar Support if the problem looks like authentication or service availability rather than a local file failure.

Multiple GTA V installations on different drives can confuse the launcher handoff, particularly if Rockstar detects a different copy from the one owned and started by Epic. Community troubleshooting reports describe this as an edge case, not a universal cause.
- Open the GTA V entry in Epic and confirm its installation location.
- Avoid keeping multiple incomplete or abandoned copies on different drives.
- Do not delete a second installation until you know which copy Epic owns and launches.
- Use Epic’s Library entry instead of manually starting an unrelated executable.
9. Update Windows and graphics drivers
Install pending Windows updates and current graphics drivers after the targeted fixes above. This is less likely to repair missing launcher files, but it can help if GTA V crashes immediately after the launcher handoff. Epic includes system and driver updates in its broader launcher troubleshooting guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems10. Reinstall only as a last resort
Reinstallation cannot fix an account problem, service outage, DNS failure, permission mismatch, or security block, so it should be near the end of the process.
Before removing anything:
- Confirm the GTA V installation directory.
- Back up local save and configuration data where applicable.
- Record whether Epic verification repaired files.
- Remove mods and preserve mod configuration files separately.
Epic’s LS-0013 instructions recommend closing Epic, deleting the affected game folder, reopening the launcher, and reinstalling. Choosing another drive can be a useful test if the current drive or installation path is suspect. Reinstall Epic Games Launcher or Rockstar components only when the evidence points to the launcher rather than the game files.
Use the symptom to choose the next step
| Symptom | Most relevant next step |
|---|---|
| The error appears immediately after clicking Launch | Verify GTA V, clear Epic’s cache, and test matching permissions. |
| Verification repairs files but the error returns | Check mods, antivirus quarantine, storage problems, and the Rockstar handoff. |
| Rockstar Games Launcher never opens | Check its installation, permissions, background conflicts, and security blocks. |
| Declining a UAC prompt causes the error | Verify the executable’s identity, then test consistent permissions. |
| The game worked before mods were installed | Return to a clean installation and verify again. |
| GTA V is installed on multiple drives | Confirm which copy Epic owns and launches before deleting anything. |
| The launcher opens but cannot sign in | Check service status, firewall rules, DNS, and network restrictions. |
| Reinstalling does not help | Stop repeating verification and investigate Rockstar, account, permissions, security, or service issues. |
When to contact Rockstar Support
Contact Rockstar Support when verification, cache clearing, clean-launch testing, and permission checks do not resolve the problem—especially if reinstalling changes nothing. Include:
- The exact error text and any LS error code
- Your Windows version
- Whether Epic verification repaired files
- Whether mods were ever installed
- Whether Rockstar Games Launcher opens and allows sign-in
- The Epic and Rockstar account relationship
- Launcher logs or crash reports if support requests them
That information helps distinguish a damaged installation from a launcher handoff, account, service, or system-permission problem.
