Before you start
- Use a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC.
- Make sure Xbox Game Bar is enabled.
- Open the game or app you want to capture.
- Check that you have enough free storage.
- Connect your microphone first if you want commentary.
Microsoft’s instructions cover both Windows 10 and Windows 11, although settings labels and their locations can vary between versions and updates. For the current supported workflow, see Microsoft’s Xbox Game Bar recording guide.

- Use the Settings search box and search for Xbox Game Bar or xbox.

How to record your microphone
Press Win + Alt + M to turn microphone capture on or off while recording. Turn it on before beginning commentary, and toggle it off whenever you do not want your voice included.
If your narration is missing, open the overlay with Win + G and check the microphone control. Also verify Windows microphone permissions, the selected input device, the headset’s mute switch, and whether the microphone was connected before Game Bar started. Game audio and microphone capture are separate settings, so disabling the microphone does not necessarily disable game audio.
Include game, app, and system audio
- Press Win + G.
- Open Settings.
- Select Capturing.
- Review the audio recording option.
- Choose All if you want the broadest available mix of game, app, microphone, and system sounds.
Choosing All does not guarantee that every sound will be captured. Check Windows’ volume mixer, the game’s audio settings, the selected playback device, headset connections, and whether an application is muted. Bluetooth headsets and exclusive audio modes can also affect the result.

Xbox Game Bar is intended for recording a game or supported app. Do not assume it can capture every desktop window, File Explorer session, arbitrary screen region, or protected-content surface.
If you need to record the Windows desktop, select a rectangular area, create a tutorial, or capture several windows, Microsoft points users toward Snipping Tool for general screen recording. Clipchamp is a better fit when recording is only part of a workflow that also requires video editing. For scenes, webcam layouts, streaming, advanced audio mixing, and detailed encoder controls, OBS Studio is the more flexible type of tool.

Common problems and fixes
Win + Alt + R does nothing
- Press Win + G to see whether Game Bar opens.
- If it does not, enable Game Bar in Settings.
- Confirm that the game or app is in the foreground.
- Try the record button in the Capture widget.
- Check whether another application has taken over the shortcut.
- Restart Game Bar or Windows if the overlay is unresponsive.
The recording is missing
Check Videos > Captures and identify the file using its game or app name and timestamp. If the folder is empty, confirm that recording actually started and that you pressed the stop shortcut. Also check for a redirected Videos folder, insufficient storage, security software interference, or an app session that failed during capture.
There is no microphone audio
Check the microphone icon in Game Bar and press Win + Alt + M during recording. Then verify Windows microphone permissions, the default input device, the headset’s mute control, and the physical connection.
There is no game or system audio
Open Win + G > Settings > Capturing and review the audio selection. If appropriate, choose All, then check the Windows volume mixer, game volume, playback device, and headset connection.

The wrong window was captured
Click the intended game or app before starting. Game Bar’s documented process begins with navigating to the game or application to be recorded.
The overlay will not appear
Game Bar may be disabled, a shortcut may conflict with another program, or the game’s display mode or permissions may interfere with the overlay. Updating or repairing Game Bar and related Windows gaming components may help, but the correct fix depends on the Windows build and the affected game. Microsoft also provides an Xbox troubleshooting guide for recording game clips.
Is Xbox Game Bar the right recorder?
| Choose | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Game Bar | Fast gameplay clips, keyboard-controlled recording, and basic audio or microphone capture. | Less control over scenes, layouts, encoding, and desktop capture. |
| Snipping Tool | General Windows screen recording and selected regions. | Not focused on a full gameplay-production workflow. |
| Clipchamp | Recording followed by straightforward video editing. | More of a recording-and-editing workflow than an instant game-clip tool. |
| OBS Studio | Streaming, scenes, overlays, webcam layouts, advanced audio, and detailed capture control. | Requires more setup than Game Bar. |
Game Bar favors convenience over production control. High-resolution or high-frame-rate games can create large files and may show reduced performance, dropped frames, storage exhaustion, or audio-video synchronization problems. Results can also vary between fullscreen, borderless, and windowed modes. Microsoft’s related Windows guidance covers Snipping Tool and Clipchamp as recording alternatives.
