There is no single verified fix for every GTA V shadow problem. The right first step is to identify your platform, whether you are playing the PC Legacy or Enhanced edition, and what the shadow is doing: flickering, shimmering, pixelating, popping in at a distance, disappearing, or looking wrong with ray tracing enabled. Then compare reversible graphics settings and, on PC, run Rockstar’s general maintenance checks.
Start by identifying the shadow problem
“Shadow flickering” and a “shadow behind the car” describe what you see, but they do not establish the cause. Before changing settings, note:
- Your platform and, on PC, whether you are using GTA V Legacy or Enhanced.
- Your graphics card and whether ray tracing, upscaling, or graphics mods are enabled.
- Whether the issue is flickering or shimmering, blocky or pixelated shadows, distant pop-in, missing shadows, or an incorrect ray-traced shadow.
- When it happens—for example, only while moving, near a vehicle, or with a particular graphics option enabled.
Do not apply PC-only settings advice to console versions. Rockstar lists separate PC requirements for Legacy and Enhanced, and its requirements page was last updated December 10, 2025: GTA V PC system requirements. Enhanced adds ray-traced shadows, so Legacy-era settings advice may not address an Enhanced ray-tracing issue. Rockstar’s product page describes the editions and Enhanced features: GTA V.
Compare GTA V’s shadow settings on PC
Change one setting at a time, compare the same scene, and keep the change only if it improves the artifact without an unacceptable visual or performance trade-off. Available options can differ by edition and configuration.

Soft Shadows
Compare the available Soft Shadows modes, including PCSS where offered. This can help determine whether the chosen shadow appearance is contributing to the problem, but it is not a verified universal fix. NVIDIA’s PCSS guidance dates to 2015 and describes image-quality settings rather than a repair for current shadow bugs: NVIDIA’s GTA V PCSS guide.
In NVIDIA’s 2015 test setup, Soft Shadows cost “6.4 frames per second at the very most.” That is a historical, setup-specific result—not a current performance estimate for your PC. NVIDIA also recommended Very High Shader Quality, Very High Shadow Quality, Ultra Grass Quality, and High Resolution Shadows On for its PCSS image-quality comparison. Those settings can raise graphics demands and are not guaranteed fixes.
Shadow Quality and High Resolution Shadows
Compare Shadow Quality settings, then test High Resolution Shadows if the option is available. Lowering quality may reduce rendering demands but changes appearance; raising it may improve detail while costing performance. Neither change is established as a cure for every flicker, pixelation, or pop-in problem.

Check whether the artifact is edge shimmer
If edges crawl or shimmer as the camera moves, the visible problem may be temporal aliasing rather than a shadow setting alone. NVIDIA discusses this kind of artifact in its guide: NVIDIA’s GTA V PCSS guide. That description can help characterize what you see; it does not diagnose an individual game or PC.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRun Rockstar’s general PC checks
For PC problems, Rockstar recommends keeping the game patched, updating graphics drivers, and verifying the game files. These are sensible general checks, not a Rockstar-guaranteed shadow fix. Follow Rockstar’s steps for your launcher and edition: verify game files in the Rockstar Games Launcher and update graphics-card drivers.
- Install the latest available GTA V update for your edition.
- Update your graphics driver using the relevant GPU maker’s supported process.
- Verify the game files through the launcher used to install the game.
- Recheck the same scene before changing additional settings, so you can tell whether a step made a difference.
For Enhanced ray-traced shadows, check the update notes
Rockstar’s title-update notes include a specific fix for Avenger rotor shadows appearing incorrectly when ray-traced shadows were enabled. That establishes a fix for that named issue; it does not establish that the update fixes other reports of flickering, pixelation, or incorrect shadows. The notes also say Lighting Quality affects vehicle-headlight shadow quality and some local volumetric lighting. Check the notes for your platform and update: Rockstar title-update notes.

Do not confuse a shadow artifact with a launch crash
Rockstar’s DirectX 12 and driver-rollback guidance concerns the ERR_GFX_STATE launch-crash error. It is not a recommended shadow fix. Use it only if you are troubleshooting that specific error: Rockstar support guidance for ERR_GFX_STATE.
When settings do not solve it
If the problem remains, record the edition, platform, GPU, graphics options, whether ray tracing or mods are enabled, and the exact symptom and situation. That information makes it possible to distinguish a setting interaction from an edition-specific or graphics-mod issue. The available official guidance does not establish a universal shadow fix or show that buying a new GPU or monitor resolves these artifacts. Check your edition’s system requirements before considering hardware changes.
